Shimonoseki

The Kaikyō Yume Tower (海峡ゆめタワー) dominates the city of Shimonoseki and is the tallest tower in western Japan. Standing 153 metres tall, it was opened in July 1996. It forms a part of the Kaikyō Messe Shimonoseki building, which houses a conference centre and corporate offices.The tower was designed by NTT Power and Building Facilities and built by Takenaka Corporation.Upon paying an admission fee, tourists can visit an observation deck in the glass sphere at the top of the building for panoramic views over the city and the Kanmon Straits. The Shimonoseki Station massacre (Japanese: 下関通り魔殺人事件) was a mass murder that occurred in Shimonoseki, Japan on 29 September 1999. Yasuaki Uwabe, a 35-year-old former architect, drove a car into Shimonoseki Station and then stabbed passers-by at random, killing five people and injuring 10 others, before being arrested at the scene. Uwabe was sentenced to death in 2002 and executed in 2012.

Shimonoseki Station (下関駅, Shimonoseki-eki) is a railway station on the Sanyo Main Line, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) services also use this station. The company boundary between JR West and JR Kyushu is at the west end of this station where there is an entrance signal from Moji.

The Kanmon Straits (関門海峡, Kanmon-kaikyō) or the Straits of Shimonoseki is the stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan's four main islands. On the Honshu side of the strait is Shimonoseki (下関, which contributed "Kan" (関) to the name of the strait) and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu, whose former city and present ward, Moji (門司), gave the strait its "mon" (門). The straits silt up at the rate of about 15 centimetres per annum, and dredging has made it possible to build the Kitakyushu Airport at low cost. Western maps from the 19th century also refer to this waterway as the Straits of Van der Capellen.

Kameyama Hachimangū (亀山八幡宮, Kameyama Hachimangū) is a Shinto shrine located in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It is a Hachiman shrine, dedicated to the kami Hachiman. The kami it enshrines include Emperor Ōjin, Empress Jingū, and Emperor Chūai. It was established in 859, and has an annual festival on October 15. The shrine can be reached by bus from Shimonoseki Station.

Shimonoseki Junior College (下関短期大学, Shimonoseki tanki daigaku) is a private junior college in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. The school opened in 1962 as a women's junior college with enrollment of 32 students. In 2001 it became coeducational, adopting the present name at the same time.

Ganryū-jima (巌流島, formerly Funa-jima 船島) is an island in Japan located between Honshū and Kyūshū, and accessible via ferry from Shimonoseki Harbor (下関港).

Baiko Gakuin University (梅光学院大学, Baikō gakuin daigaku) is a private university in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. The predecessor of the school was founded in 1872, and it was chartered as a women's junior college in 1964. The school's emblem (a stylized plum blossom) and kanji name Baiko (梅光, Baikō) reflect the names of the two schools merged to form Baiko Gakuin. In 1967, the school began to operate as a four-year college, which became co-ed in 2001; the women's junior college continued to run within the university until 2006, when it was dissolved and its operations folded into the university. The school has a long affiliation with its namesake women's junior high and high school, Baiko jo Gakuin, also in Shimonoseki. The school's Latin motto ut filii lucis ambulate ('let us walk as children of light'), drawn from Ephesians 5:8, reflects the Christian influence on its founding, an influence still reflected today in its daily chapel services and hospitality to Christian teachers.

Akama Shrine (赤間神宮, Akama Jingū) is a Shinto shrine in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It is dedicated to Antoku, a Japanese emperor who died as a child in the Battle of Dan-no-ura (aka Dannoura), which occurred nearby in 1185. This battle was important in the history of Japan because it brought an end to Genpei War in which the Minamoto clan defeated the rival Taira clan, and ended the Taira bid for control of Japan. The shrine is situated on the waterfront of the Kanmon Strait, between the centre of Shimonoseki and the tourist restaurants of Karato, Kanmon Wharf. The bright red main gate makes it a very visible sight.

Hikoshima (彦島) (also called Hikishima (引島) in Nihon Shoki) is an island on the south-west tip of Honshu, Japan.
