The Shimonoseki Station massacre (Japanese: 下関通り魔殺人事件) was a mass murder that occurred in Shimonoseki, Japan on 29 September 1999. Yasuaki Uwabe, a 35-year-old former architect, drove a car into Shimonoseki Station and then stabbed passers-by at random, killing five people and injuring 10 others, before being arrested at the scene. Uwabe was sentenced to death in 2002 and executed in 2012.

Shimonoseki Station (下関駅, Shimonoseki-eki) is a railway station on the Sanyo Main Line, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) services also use this station. The company boundary between JR West and JR Kyushu is at the west end of this station where there is an entrance signal from Moji.

Ganryū-jima (巌流島, formerly Funa-jima 船島) is an island in Japan located between Honshū and Kyūshū, and accessible via ferry from Shimonoseki Harbor (下関港).

Buzenda (豊前田, ぶぜんだ) refers to the downtown area of Shimonoseki City, Japan. It is located in the Shimonoseki Station area, and it is known as the most famous downtown area in Yamaguchi Prefecture. There are izakaya, karaoke bars, and other social venues around Buzenda-cho-2.

The Kaikyō Yume Tower (海峡ゆめタワー) dominates the city of Shimonoseki and is the tallest tower in western Japan. Standing 153 metres tall, it was opened in July 1996. It forms a part of the Kaikyō Messe Shimonoseki building, which houses a conference centre and corporate offices.The tower was designed by NTT Power and Building Facilities and built by Takenaka Corporation.Upon paying an admission fee, tourists can visit an observation deck in the glass sphere at the top of the building for panoramic views over the city and the Kanmon Straits. Shimonoseki (Japanese: 下関市, Hepburn: Shimonoseki-shi) is a city located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. With a population of 265,684, it is the largest city in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the fifth-largest city in the Chūgoku region. It is located at the southwestern tip of Honshu facing the Tsushima Strait at the entrance to the Kanmon Straits (also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki) across from the city of Kitakyushu and the island of Kyushu. It is nicknamed the "Fugu Capital" for the locally caught pufferfish, and is the largest harvester of the pufferfish in Japan.

The Kanmon Railway Tunnel (関門鉄道トンネル, kanmon tetsudō tonneru) was the first undersea tunnel in Japan. It goes underneath the Kanmon Straits, connecting the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. It is an important link in the Japanese rail network. Its construction began in 1936, and it was completed in November 1942, during the Pacific War. The Honshu-bound tunnel is 3,604 m (11,824 ft) long, the Kyushu-bound tunnel is 3,614 m (11,857 ft). Track gauge is 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) (Cape gauge), and its electric power supply is at 1,500 volts DC. Near the end of the Pacific War the Allies planned to blow up the two tunnels with 50,000 pounds of explosives as part of the invasion of Japan. The Office of Strategic Services trained 250 of its agents for the task, but the surrender of Japan occurred before they were needed.The Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) assumed ownership of this tunnel following the breakup of the Japanese National Railways system in 1987.

Shimonoseki Junior College (下関短期大学, Shimonoseki tanki daigaku) is a private junior college in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. The school opened in 1962 as a women's junior college with enrollment of 32 students. In 2001 it became coeducational, adopting the present name at the same time.

Komorie Station (小森江駅, Komorie-eki) is a railway station on the Kagoshima Main Line in Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, Japan, operated by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu).

The Kanmon Straits (関門海峡, Kanmon-kaikyō) or the Straits of Shimonoseki is the stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan's four main islands. On the Honshu side of the strait is Shimonoseki (下関, which contributed "Kan" (関) to the name of the strait) and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu, whose former city and present ward, Moji (門司), gave the strait its "mon" (門). The straits silt up at the rate of about 15 centimetres per annum, and dredging has made it possible to build the Kitakyushu Airport at low cost. Western maps from the 19th century also refer to this waterway as the Straits of Van der Capellen.

Karato (唐戸) is the downtown area of the city of Shimonoseki, Japan. It is known as the most famous sightseeing spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Baiko Gakuin University (梅光学院大学, Baikō gakuin daigaku) is a private university in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan. The predecessor of the school was founded in 1872, and it was chartered as a women's junior college in 1964. The school's emblem (a stylized plum blossom) and kanji name Baiko (梅光, Baikō) reflect the names of the two schools merged to form Baiko Gakuin. In 1967, the school began to operate as a four-year college, which became co-ed in 2001; the women's junior college continued to run within the university until 2006, when it was dissolved and its operations folded into the university. The school has a long affiliation with its namesake women's junior high and high school, Baiko jo Gakuin, also in Shimonoseki. The school's Latin motto ut filii lucis ambulate ('let us walk as children of light'), drawn from Ephesians 5:8, reflects the Christian influence on its founding, an influence still reflected today in its daily chapel services and hospitality to Christian teachers.
