Dobson is a town in Dobson Township, Surry County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 1,396. It is the county seat of Surry County. Dobson is the home of the Shelton Vineyards, the largest winery in North Carolina. It is also home to a significant Latino population due to the large number of farms in the area. The main crops in the area are corn, tobacco and soy beans.

Surry County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Harry Barton and built in 1916. It is a three-story, rectangular Classical Revival style tan brick building. The five bay front and rear elevations feature a central entrance flanked by pairs of Ionic order pilasters. Two-story wings were added to the main block in 1971.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The highest point in Dobson Township is Turner Mountain, elevation 1,275 feet (389 m), which is the site of several communications towers.

It is part of the North Carolina Community College System. Surry Community College offers thirty-six areas of study, many of which have options for an associate degree, diploma, or certificate, as well as online degrees. The college serves over 18,000 students in over 1,500 classes through their Workforce Training and Continuing Education Division. This area of the college offers a variety of learning opportunities through Workforce and Technology classes for those looking to take a one-time class for personal enrichment or to expand their knowledge base in a particular area.In addition to its main campus in Dobson, the college operates four satellite centers: The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy, The Elkin Center in Elkin, The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain, and The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville.

New Hope is an unincorporated community in the Dobson Township of central Surry County, North Carolina. The community is on the outskirts of the town of Dobson along the Fisher River. Prominent landmarks include New Hope Baptist Church (founded 1878) and the Fisher River county park. The community of New Hope also has a mirror community just outside of Whiteville, NC as well on US HWY 701 a.k.a. (James B. White Hwy. South). This is home of the Tri-County sweet potato plant.

Union Cross is an unincorporated community in the Dobson Township of central Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The community is roughly centered on the intersection of Dobbins Mill Road and Twin Oaks Road. Prominent landmarks include Union Cross Baptist Church, Union Cross Baptist Church cemetery, the Dockery Family Cemetery, and a local Ruritan club. The land for the Union Cross Ruritan Club was donated to the community for this purpose by Mrs. Minnie Shinault Dockery, widow of T. Alvin Dockery, a prominent local farmer and owner of the local general store. This Community is served by the Jot-Um-Down Volunteer Fire Department, which was founded in 1980.
