Dobson is a town in Dobson Township, Surry County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 1,396. It is the county seat of Surry County. Dobson is the home of the Shelton Vineyards, the largest winery in North Carolina. It is also home to a significant Latino population due to the large number of farms in the area. The main crops in the area are corn, tobacco and soy beans.

The college serves over 18,000 students in over 1,500 classes through their Workforce Training and Continuing Education Division. This area of the college offers a variety of learning opportunities through Workforce and Technology classes for those looking to take a one-time class for personal enrichment or to expand their knowledge base in a particular area.In addition to its main campus in Dobson, the college operates four satellite centers: The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy, The Elkin Center in Elkin, The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain, and The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville.

Geographically, Dobson Township occupies 69.1 square miles (179 km2) in central Surry County. The only incorporated municipality within Dobson Township is the Town of Dobson, the county seat of Surry County. Additionally, there are several smaller, unincorporated communities located here, including New Hope, Salem Fork and Union Cross. The highest point in Dobson Township is Turner Mountain, elevation 1,275 feet (389 m), which is the site of several communications towers.

New Hope is an unincorporated community in the Dobson Township of central Surry County, North Carolina. The community is on the outskirts of the town of Dobson along the Fisher River. Prominent landmarks include New Hope Baptist Church (founded 1878) and the Fisher River county park. The community of New Hope also has a mirror community just outside of Whiteville, NC as well on US HWY 701 a.k.a. (James B. White Hwy. South). This is home of the Tri-County sweet potato plant.

Located in the Yadkin Valley near Mount Airy, the estate is 406-acre (1.64 km2) acres. The Shelton Vineyards' wines are reflective of the terroir of the Yadkin Valley.

Union Cross is an unincorporated community in the Dobson Township of central Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The community is roughly centered on the intersection of Dobbins Mill Road and Twin Oaks Road. Prominent landmarks include Union Cross Baptist Church, Union Cross Baptist Church cemetery, the Dockery Family Cemetery, and a local Ruritan club. The land for the Union Cross Ruritan Club was donated to the community for this purpose by Mrs. Minnie Shinault Dockery, widow of T. Alvin Dockery, a prominent local farmer and owner of the local general store. This Community is served by the Jot-Um-Down Volunteer Fire Department, which was founded in 1980.
