Its predecessor, Nihon Law School (currently the Department of Law), was founded by Yamada Akiyoshi, the Minister of Justice, in 1889. It is one of the private universities representing Japan. The university's name is derived from the Japanese word "Nihon" meaning Japan. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) accredits the school.Originally established in 1929 as an elementary school for Overseas Chinese, its operation now follows the education system of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and provides education for students ageing between 7 and 18.

It borders Ichibanchō East, Kojimachi to the west and south, Rokubanchō and Yonbanchō the north. It was renamed from Shimo-Nibancho on August 1, 1938. It is home to the Belgian Embassy and Israeli Embassy. Globis University Graduate School of Management is a private university based in Nibanchō.

Banchō (番町) is an area in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan, consisting of the six "-banchō" districts, Ichibanchō (一番町) to Rokubanchō (六番町), as well as parts of Kudanminami and Kudankita, and Fuijimi. The Banchō area is located to the west of the Imperial Palace. The historical area is roughly triangular in shape, Shinjuku Ave (新宿通り) forms its southern boundary. A rough line from Hanzō Moat (半蔵濠, Hanzō-bori) to Ushigome Mitsuke (牛込見附) forms its eastern boundary, and the railway of the Chūō Main Line along the outer moats of Ichigaya and Ushigome forms its northwestern boundary from Yotsuya to Ushigome Mitsuke. Yasukuni Ave (靖国通り) runs through its historical boundaries. Present day area with "Banchō" in the districts names stops south of this avenue.
