Carnac Island (Noongar: Ngoorloormayup) is a 19-hectare (47-acre), A Class, island nature reserve about 10 km (6.2 mi) south-west of Fremantle and 3.5 km (2.2 mi) north of Garden Island in Western Australia.

Cockburn Sound (Nyungar Aboriginal Australian name: Derbal Nara) is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia. It extends from the south of the mouth of the Swan River at Fremantle for about 25 km to Point Peron near Rockingham. The total area of the sound is about 100 km2. It is bounded on the east by the mainland council areas of Cockburn and Kwinana, on the west by Garden Island and Carnac Island, and includes several rocky outcrops and reefs. The Gage Roads shipping channel lies to the north. The sound was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling, probably after Admiral Sir George Cockburn.The Perth Seawater Desalination Plant can be found here.

Parmelia Bank is a sandbank to the north of Cockburn Sound, off Fremantle, Western Australia within the limits of the Fremantle Outer Harbour. The Parmelia Bank is named after the barque Parmelia, which grounded on the sandbank in 1829. Parmelia Bank, south of Success Bank, is a slightly smaller bank than the latter and runs approximately parallel to it, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) further south extending from Woodman Point, almost to Carnac Island; it also is within the designated Fremantle Outer Harbour. The channel through this bank is likewise named after the bank – Parmelia Channel that leads into Cockburn Sound. During World War II, Parmelia Bank was the location of the anti-submarine boom net protecting the northern access to Cockburn Sound. From Woodman Point, the barrier ran west on top of the bank, stretching to Carnac Island. A dredged channel, the location of a gate in the barrier, let through the sandbank into Cockburn Sound. From this channel, the barrier ran south-west to Garden Island. The Success and Parmelia Banks were formed during the Holocene, more than 10,000 years ago, through the deposition of sediment which had been eroded from the Rottnest Shelf and the Garden Island Ridge. Success Bank was formed in the lee of Mewstone Rocks while Parmelia Bank was formed in lee of Carnac Island.

Woodman Point is a headland on the west coast of Western Australia. It is located in the Perth suburb of Coogee, 22 km (14 mi) south-south-west of the city centre and 8 km (5.0 mi) south of Fremantle. It extends westward into the Indian Ocean. The coastal waters immediately to the north of the point are known as Owen Anchorage, while to the south is Jervoise Bay. Woodman Point marks the northern extent of Cockburn Sound. Woodman Point is contained completely within the Woodman Point Regional Park, a 54-hectare (130-acre) regional park with recreational facilities including parklands, playgrounds, jetties, and a caravan park; and historic sites including a World War II prisoner-of-war camp and World War II munitions bunkers. The remnant vegetation of the area was documented by Robert Powell and Jame Emberson in the book Woodman Point: a relic of Perth's coastal vegetation in 1981.

HMAS Stirling is a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base that is part of Fleet Base West situated on the west coast of Australia, on the Indian Ocean. The base is located on Garden Island in the state of Western Australia, near the city of Perth. Garden Island also has its own military airport on the island (ICAO: YGAD). HMAS Stirling is currently under the command of Captain Ken Burleigh, RAN

Henderson Naval Base was a proposed and partially built naval base of the Royal Australian Navy south of Fremantle, Western Australia in what is now the suburbs of Naval Base and Henderson. Planned in 1911, construction of the base commenced in 1913 but was abandoned during World War I and cancelled in 1920. Temporary naval facilities subsequently existed in the state during World War II but a permanent facility was not established until 1978, when HMAS Stirling was commissioned.

HNLMS K VIII was one of the three K VIII-class submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy, built to serve as patrol vessel for the Dutch colonies. Launched in 1922 the boat saw service at the start of World War II, before being decommissioned in 1942.

The Swan River (Nyungar: Derbarl Yerrigan) is a major river in the southwest of Western Australia. The river runs through the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia's capital and largest city.

SS Alacrity was a tug built in Graville, France in 1893 as Jean Bart and was operated by the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce. She was sold in 1902 to Howard Smith and renamed Alacrity for tug service in Port Phillip, Australia. During the First World War, she was purchased by the Royal Australian Navy in 1917 for use as a patrol vessel, inspection vessel, and minesweeper based at Fremantle. She was never commissioned. After being sold in 1925, she was slated for breaking up and was moored in Jervoise Bay, Western Australia, until a fierce gale in Cockburn Sound wrecked her in 1931.

The Australian Marine Complex (AMC) is a marine industry precinct located at Henderson, Western Australia, 23km south of the Perth CBD. It is located on Cockburn Sound.

Coogee is a southern coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn.

Cape Peron is a headland at Rockingham, at the southern end of Cockburn Sound in Western Australia. The cape is locally known as Point Peron, and is noted for its protected beaches, limestone cliffs, reefs and panoramic views. Cape Peron includes the suburb of Peron, and "Point Peron" is the designation of a minor promontory on the south side of the cape's extremity. The feature was named after the French naturalist and zoologist François Péron, who accompanied the expedition of Nicolas Baudin along the western coast of Australia in 1801. A causeway was constructed in 1973 between Cape Peron and Garden Island to carry vehicular traffic between the mainland and the island. Since the island houses HMAS Stirling, a Royal Australian Navy base, access is restricted by the military. The wreck of RMS Orizaba (1886–1905) lies on Five Fathom Bank, 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) west of the cape.
