Carnac Island

Challenger Battery, also referred to as J Gun Battery, is a heritage-listed battery at Entrance Point, Garden Island, Western Australia. Historically, it has is also been known as Garden Battery, Entrance Battery and, finally, Challenger Battery. It was added to the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List on 22 June 2004. It was part of the Coastal defences of Australia during World War II and the Fremantle Fortress, protecting Fremantle Harbour.

Parmelia Bank is a sandbank to the north of Cockburn Sound, off Fremantle, Western Australia within the limits of the Fremantle Outer Harbour. The Parmelia Bank is named after the barque Parmelia, which grounded on the sandbank in 1829. Parmelia Bank, south of Success Bank, is a slightly smaller bank than the latter and runs approximately parallel to it, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) further south extending from Woodman Point, almost to Carnac Island; it also is within the designated Fremantle Outer Harbour. The channel through this bank is likewise named after the bank – Parmelia Channel that leads into Cockburn Sound. During World War II, Parmelia Bank was the location of the anti-submarine boom net protecting the northern access to Cockburn Sound. From Woodman Point, the barrier ran west on top of the bank, stretching to Carnac Island. A dredged channel, the location of a gate in the barrier, let through the sandbank into Cockburn Sound. From this channel, the barrier ran south-west to Garden Island. The Success and Parmelia Banks were formed during the Holocene, more than 10,000 years ago, through the deposition of sediment which had been eroded from the Rottnest Shelf and the Garden Island Ridge. Success Bank was formed in the lee of Mewstone Rocks while Parmelia Bank was formed in lee of Carnac Island.

The Swan River (Nyungar: Derbarl Yerrigan) is a major river in the southwest of Western Australia. The river runs through the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia's capital and largest city.

Cockburn Sound (Nyungar Aboriginal Australian name: Derbal Nara) is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia. It extends from the south of the mouth of the Swan River at Fremantle for about 25 km to Point Peron near Rockingham. The total area of the sound is about 100 km2. It is bounded on the east by the mainland council areas of Cockburn and Kwinana, on the west by Garden Island and Carnac Island, and includes several rocky outcrops and reefs. The Gage Roads shipping channel lies to the north. The sound was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling, probably after Admiral Sir George Cockburn.The Perth Seawater Desalination Plant can be found here.

Gage Roads is an outer harbour area of Fremantle Harbour situated in the Indian Ocean offshore from Fremantle, Western Australia. It incorporates a deep water sea channel as part of its function.Gage Roads serves as a shipping lane and anchorage for sea traffic heading towards the seaport of Fremantle. Gage Roads was the location of the 1987 America's Cup. Rottnest Island lies to the west of Gage Roads, Owen Anchorage and Cockburn Sound lie to the south. The local Gage Roads Brewing Company, as well as the local marine engineering company Gage Roads Marine, are named after the area.

Woodman Point is a headland on the west coast of Western Australia. It is located in the Perth suburb of Coogee, 22 km (14 mi) south-south-west of the city centre and 8 km (5.0 mi) south of Fremantle. It extends westward into the Indian Ocean. The coastal waters immediately to the north of the point are known as Owen Anchorage, while to the south is Jervoise Bay. Woodman Point marks the northern extent of Cockburn Sound. Woodman Point is contained completely within the Woodman Point Regional Park, a 54-hectare (130-acre) regional park with recreational facilities including parklands, playgrounds, jetties, and a caravan park; and historic sites including a World War II prisoner-of-war camp and World War II munitions bunkers. The remnant vegetation of the area was documented by Robert Powell and Jame Emberson in the book Woodman Point: a relic of Perth's coastal vegetation in 1981.

The North Mole Lighthouse began operation in 1906 at the entrance to Fremantle Harbour, in Western Australia. The occulting red light, emitted from a fixed lightsource at a focal plane height of 15 metres (49 ft) above sea level, is visible for 11 miles (18 km) and indicates the westernmost point of the harbour and its entrance. The lighthouse established permanent service from 1906; after the mole's foundations had settled a temporary lighting arrangement there was discharged. The light originally planned for the house was found to be too powerful and was sent to Broome for the steel lighthouse at Gantheume Point. The lighthouse and its technically identical yet green coloured partner on the south mole are the last remaining of their type. It has an 'indicative place' status of the Register of the National Estate and is a well-known landmark to seamen visiting the port. It was designed by Charles Yelverton O'Connor, an engineer responsible for the construction of Fremantle Harbour and who advanced the proposal of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. The 15 m tower is made of cast iron, painted red and features classical decorations. It is located at the end of North Mole Drive. The position is a well used recreational fishing spot and a vantage point for ocean yacht racing or birdwatching. In June in 1927 and July 1935, severe storms were recorded affecting the Moles but not seriously damaging the lighthouses.

C.Y. O'Connor Beach is a beach in the suburb of North Coogee, south of Fremantle, Western Australia. It extends from McTaggart Cove in the south to Catherine Point in the north and is also known as the CY O'Connor reserve. The C.Y. O'Connor sculpture is one of the features of the beach; the statue is situated in the ocean about 30 meters off the shoreline. The statute acknowledges that this is where Charles Yelverton O'Connor rode his horse into the surf and committed suicide. Also on the beach is the hulk of SS Wyola, which was dismantled there for scrap; alongside it is the remnants of the timber barge that was used. Previously the beach and adjoining land was part of Robb's Jetty Abattoir. The jetty pylons can still be seen in the surf; they stretch out approximately 120 metres (390 ft) from the shore, making a popular shore dive site. The jetty was built in 1870s and closed down in 1992, with the jetty and associated buildings removed in 1994.

Henderson Naval Base was a proposed and partially built naval base of the Royal Australian Navy south of Fremantle, Western Australia in what is now the suburbs of Naval Base and Henderson. Planned in 1911, construction of the base commenced in 1913 but was abandoned during World War I and cancelled in 1920. Temporary naval facilities subsequently existed in the state during World War II but a permanent facility was not established until 1978, when HMAS Stirling was commissioned.

HNLMS K VIII was one of the three K VIII-class submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy, built to serve as patrol vessel for the Dutch colonies. Launched in 1922 the boat saw service at the start of World War II, before being decommissioned in 1942.

Challenger Harbour is a marina in Fremantle, Western Australia adjacent to the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. The harbour breakwater covers the historical site of the Fremantle Long Jetty.The harbour was named after HMS Challenger, which was under the command of Captain Charles Fremantle when, on 2 May 1829, he hoisted the British flag on Arthur Head, the south head of the mouth of the Swan River, to mark the establishment of the Swan River Colony.The harbour was built for the 1987 America's Cup in 1983–84 and included facilities specifically for the associated 12-Metre class racing yachts. A stone breakwater protected the harbour from the ocean. It has since been modified for recreational vessels only, with seven jetties (including one jetty leased to the Fremantle Cruising Yacht Club and four jetties leased to the Royal Perth Yacht Club), as well as short-term serviced apartments. Pens range in size from 10 metres (33 ft) up to 35 metres (115 ft). The marina is owned and administered by the Western Australian Department of Transport.In January 1999 the Fremantle Sea Rescue's communications centre was sited at the harbour, until a 2016 move to the former signal station on Cantonment Hill.

Fremantle Long Jetty was constructed in 1873 to replace the smaller South Jetty which had become too small for the large amounts of vessels entering the colony in Western Australia. The jetty lies in Bather's Bay which has been an occupation site since the Swan River Colony was established in 1829. It was a centre of trade and communications that served Fremantle and Perth until Fremantle Harbour was opened. An increased amount of shipping made it necessary to improve the harbouring facilities by the late 1860s. Long Jetty was built as a less expensive alternative to building a harbour at the mouth of the Swan River due to a lack of funds and technological shortcomings.In July 1984 the Maritime Archaeology Department of the Western Australian Museum was notified of plans to construct a marina for the 1987 America's Cup that would be close to the remains of the Long Jetty. This prompted an archaeological excavation to ascertain the importance of the site.
