Marion station (Iowa)

The Marion Commercial Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Marion, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 41 resources, which included 29 contributing buildings, one contributing site, one contributing structure, two contributing objects, and eight non-contributing buildings. The historic district covers the city's central business district. The development of this area largely occurred when Marion was the county seat of Linn County (1838-1919). There are no county government buildings extant from this era. The city was also a division point for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The period of significance is from 1855, when the oldest building in the district was built, to 1957 when the area had reached the culmination of its development. Fires in 1894 and 1895 destroyed a number of buildings, and they were replaced by more stylish commercial buildings. Commercial blocks in styles popular in Late Victorian era are dominant here. Most of the buildings in the district housed commercial operations, but it also includes three houses and two churches. Also located here is the former Marion Carnegie Public Library (1905), which is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. City Square Park is the contributing site. It was established in 1839, and the county courthouse was located across Sixth Avenue where the public library is now located. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument (1914) and the Cannon Monument, both located in the park, are the contributing objects. Tenth Street between Fifth and Seventh Avenues was paved with bricks in the late nineteenth century, and it is the contributing structure. Remnants of the historic train station that was torn down in 1988 were used to create a shelter house in City Square Park. It is one of the non-contributing buildings.

The William and Phebe C. Dunn House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. This two-story, brick dwelling is a vernacular version of the Italianate style, which was popular at the time it was built in 1866. It is a well-preserved example of a pioneer-era dwelling from the time period that Marion was the county seat of Linn County. The house was constructed by local masons and other craftsmen, utilizing locally produced brick and limestone quarried in the region. It features bracketed eaves and limestone lintels and sills. The house is architecturally similar to the buildings in the nearby Marion Commercial Historic District. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

First Presbyterian Church is located in Marion, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

The Marion Carnegie Public Library is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. The Marion Federation of Women's Clubs was established in 1901 with the purpose of organizing a public library. Adeliza Daniels was the primary force behind the organization, and she contacted Andrew Carnegie to donate funds for the building. After he agreed to a grant of $11,500, the Cedar Rapids architectural firm of Dieman and Fiske designed the brick Neoclassical building. Cedar Rapids contractor A.H. Conner was responsible for construction. It is a single-story structure built over a raised basement and a proment pedimented main entrance. The new library was dedicated on March 16, 1905, and served the community in that form until 1957. In that year the auditorium in the basement was remodeled into a children's reading room. A three-story addition, which doubled the size of the building, was completed in 1961. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The Marion Public Library has subsequently moved to a new facility, and the Carnegie building is now part of the First United Methodist Church complex. In 2009 it was included as a contributing property in the Marion Commercial Historic District.

The Granger House, also known as the Marion Historical Museum and the Granger House Museum, is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. This Victorian Italianate house was built around 1860 by Charles Myers. Earl Granger bought the house in 1876 and it remained in his family until 1973. Granger built the carriage house in 1879, and built an addition onto the main house the following year. The two-story brick building features a 1½-story ell, a gable roof, bracketed eaves, and arched stone lintels over the symmetrically arranged windows. The front porch is not the original. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The James W. and Ida G. Bowman House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. The Bowmans hired the Cedar Rapids architectural firm of Dieman & Fiske, and specifically partner Charles Dieman, to design this two-story wood-frame house that combines American Craftsman and Prairie School influences. Local contractor Charles I. Wilson completed construction in 1910 in a neighborhood populated by prominent citizens. The wide overhanging eaves with exposed rafter ends reflects the Craftsman style, while the square massing and horizontal emphasis of the siding and roofline of the porch are typical of the Prairie School style. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At the same time it was included as a contributing property in the Pucker Street Historic District.

The Braska House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. This is a vernacular house form that utilizes elements from the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Similar houses from the same period are found in Muscatine, Iowa, and the Joseph Smith Mansion House in Nauvoo, Illinois is a more elaborate example. The Greek Revival elements are found in the symmetrical main facade, the straight forward lines, and the lack of embellishments. The Italianate is found in the low-pitched hipped roof and the wide eaves. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Terrace Park Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Marion, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 27 resources, which included 20 contributing buildings and seven non-contributing buildings. The historic district is a residential area north of Marion's central business district. Like the nearby Pucker Street Historic District, Terrace Park is where the city's wealthy and influential citizens built their houses.Marion was established was one of the first towns in Linn County in 1839, and it served as its first county seat until 1919. Its early development came about because of its status. The houses here were built between 1874 and 1904, with additions and updates occurring until about 1930. Because of the prominence of its residents, the popular architectural styles of the era are found here, especially the various Victorian styles still in vogue.

The Glenn O. and Lucy O. Pyle House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. Pyle, who was involved in his family's lumberyard, built this 1½-story bungalow in 1924 for his family home. They moved here from a house on 14th Street that he also built. Both houses are located in a neighborhood where the community's more prominent citizens built their homes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They sold this property in 1933 after they had relocated to Hollywood, Florida. The house features decorative elements from both of the Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles. While it is thought that this is a patternbook or catalog house, there appear to be several custom details that suggests Pyle may have designed elements of this house himself. It is also the largest of the three houses in Marion attributed to him. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At the same time it was included as a contributing property in the Pucker Street Historic District.

The Pucker Street Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Marion, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 84 resources, which included 50 contributing buildings, three contributing structures, two contributing objects, and 29 non-contributing buildings. The historic district is a residential area near Marion's central business district. The people who initially built homes here were the city's pioneer families and then their descendants. It is also where the city's wealthy and influential citizens built their houses along Eighth Avenue and its adjacent streets. The neighborhood was called "Pucker Street" because of the superior attitudes that some of its early residents were said to have possessed.Marion was established as one of the first towns in Linn County in 1839, and it served as its first county seat until 1919. Its early development came about because of its status. There were three building booms in this neighborhood: a small one in the 1850s and the 1860s, a major one in the 1880s and 1890s, and a period of infill construction and remodeling from the 1910s to the 1930s. It was fully developed by the 1940s and has not seen significant construction in subsequent years. Because of the prominence of its residents, the popular architectural styles of the era are found here, especially the Italianate and Queen Anne. The primary buildings are houses while the secondary buildings are carriage houses and garages. Three retaining walls are the contributing structures and two mounting blocks are the contributing objects. Three houses are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Samuel M. Lane House (1868), the James W. and Ida G. Bowman House (1910), and the Glenn O. and Lucy O. Pyle House (1924).

The Samuel M. Lane House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. This two-story Italianate style dwelling was built in 1868 using locally produced brick. It is in a neighborhood where the community's more prominent citizens built their homes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It features a low-pitched hip roof, a limestone foundation, a two-story rear ell, and wide eaves that had brackets that were removed in the 1930s. The original carriage house attached to the back of the house has been converted into a den, and the present wrap-around porch replaced original full length front porch in the 1930s. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At the same time it was included as a contributing property in the Pucker Street Historic District.

The Joseph P. Mentzer House is a historic building located in Marion, Iowa, United States. An Ohio native, Mentzer made his fortune as a merchant and as a banker in Marion. After his business partnership dissolved in 1865, he turned his attention to a 170-acre (69 ha) farm he bought on the edge of town. He built this 2½-story Second Empire house in 1868. It features a mansard roof with bracketed eaves and a single-story rear wing. The house remained in the Mentzer family into the 1930s. At one point it had been converted into three apartments. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
