Jois (German pronunciation: [jɔɪ̯s] ; Hungarian: Nyulas) is a small town in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland in Eastern Austria. It is on the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl, which straddles the border with Hungary. Bruckneudorf (Hungarian: Királyhida) is a small town in the district of Neusiedl am See in the federal state of Burgenland in Austria, neighbouring Bruck an der Leitha ("Leitha Bridge"). Its name means bridge new village, whereas the Hungarian version means royal bridge, and the royal refers to King Francis I. Historically and geographically, Bruckneudorf represents the extension of the Austrian town of Bruck an der Leitha over the Austrian border into Hungary. This border, symbolised by the river Leitha, separated the Austrian Empire from the Kingdom of Hungary (Cisleithania and Transleithania). Its main current national significance derives from the Bruckneudorf military exercise ground of the Austrian federal army. Currently it is also the site of Bruck an der Leitha railway station, an important railway station near the borders with Hungary and Slovakia, a stop for nearly all the international trains that pass through it.

The Wulka (German pronunciation: [ˈvʊlka] (listen)) is a river of Burgenland, Austria. Its basin area is 402 km2 (155 sq mi).The river springs near Forchtenstein and the border to Lower Austria. It flows through Trausdorf an der Wulka and discharges near Donnerskirchen into Lake Neusiedl, in former times a runoff-free lake, but nowadays drained by an artificial channel, the Hanság-főcsatorna, into the Danube. An article in the Journal of Hydrology stated that "Waste water treatment plants contributed up to 68% of monthly flow of River Wulka into the lake."

On 27 August 2015, the bodies of 71 illegal immigrants were discovered in a lorry on the Ost Autobahn in Burgenland, Austria. The victims were part of the wave of many thousands of migrants who traveled through the western Balkans in an effort to reach Germany. The borders were opened shortly afterward to allow the influx across.

Lake Neusiedl (German: Neusiedler See, pronounced [ˈnɔɪ̯ˌziːdlɐ ze] ), or Fertő (Hungarian: Fertő (tó); Croatian: Nežidersko jezero, Niuzaljsko jezero; Slovene: Nežidersko jezero; Slovak: Neziderské jazero; Czech: Neziderské jezero), is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe, straddling the Austrian–Hungarian border. The lake covers 315 km2 (122 sq mi), of which 240 km2 (93 sq mi) is on the Austrian side and 75 km2 (29 sq mi) on the Hungarian side. The lake's drainage basin has an area of about 1,120 km2 (430 sq mi). From north to south, the lake is about 36 km (22 mi) long, and it is between 6 km (3+1⁄2 mi) and 12 km (7+1⁄2 mi) wide from east to west. On average, the lake's surface is 115.45 m (378.8 ft) above the Adriatic Sea and the lake is no more than 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) deep. The landscape surrounding the lake has been occupied since about 6000 BC, and the towns and villages around the lake were significant trading centers and meeting points for different cultures for centuries. Because of its cultural importance and the rural architecture of the villages surrounding the lake, Lake Neusiedl and the surrounding area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
