Reef Net Bay

Shaw Island is the smallest of the four San Juan Islands served by the Washington State Ferries. The island has a land area of 19.952 square kilometers (7.704 square miles) and a small year-round population of 188 (2020 census). During the summer time, weekends swell with other residents and the occasional tourist. The island is within the historical territory of the Lummi Nation. The United States obtained Shaw Island and the rest of the San Juan archipelago by treaty in 1855, but Lummi retained certain cultural and resource rights, including fishing. The Wilkes Expedition, in 1841, named the island after John Shaw, a United States Naval Officer. According to Bill Tsilixw James, hereditary chief of the Lummi Nation, the Lummi know the island as Sq'emenen. A San Juan Island resident proposed to the state Board of Geographic Names in 2015 that Squaw Bay be renamed Sq'emenen Bay; that proposal generated a compromise proposal from the Shaw Island Historical Society to rename the bay Reef Net Bay, in recognition of the reef net fishing historically and currently done there. The name "Reef Net Bay" was adopted.

Canoe Island is a 47-acre (19-hectare) island located in the center of the San Juan Islands, an archipelago in the U.S. state of Washington. The island is situated in Upright Channel between Shaw and Lopez Islands. Canoe Island's surface is mostly forested with second-growth cedar, fir, hemlock, and madrona, with some old-growth trees, too. Its maximum elevation is 127.7 feet (38.9 metres). The rocky shoreline is bordered by dense forests of bull kelp.While Canoe Island is only accessible by boat, several Washington State Ferry routes pass between the southern tip of the island and Flat Point on Lopez Island, docking at Friday Harbor, and Lopez Ferry Landing. Canoe Island is privately owned by Canoe Island French Camp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that runs an overnight summer camp for children.

The Little Red Schoolhouse on Shaw Island, Washington was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.In 1971 it was still in use as a one-room schoolhouse.However, a room was recently added to serve as a computer center, expanding it to two rooms. The building serves elementary and middle school students. It serves students up to eighth grade. It is located at the corner of Hoffman Cove and Neck Point Cove Rd.

Blind Bay is a small bay on Shaw Island in San Juan County, Washington. On an island near its mouth is Blind Island State Park.

San Juan County (Spanish: Condado de San Juan) is a county located in the Salish Sea in the far northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, its population was 17,788. The county seat and only incorporated city is Friday Harbor, located on San Juan Island. The county was formed on October 31, 1873, from Whatcom County and is named for the San Juan Islands, which are in turn named for Juan Vicente de Güemes, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo, the Viceroy of New Spain. Although the islands themselves have no state highways, the ferry routes serving the islands are designated as part of the state highway system.

Blind Island Marine State Park is a public recreation area consisting of the entirety of Blind Island, a three-acre (1.2 ha) island at the entrance to Blind Bay on Shaw Island in San Juan County, Washington. It is part of the San Juan Islands National Monument. The island lies one-third of a mile west of the Shaw Island ferry terminal and has 1,280 feet (390 m) of saltwater shoreline. The park is cooperatively managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Washington State Parks.

Cotton Point Island is a 0.25-acre (0.10 ha) island in Washington State, a few meters offshore of Cotton Point on Orcas Island. It is part of the San Juan Islands National Monument and owned by Bureau of Land Management, perhaps its smallest holding in Washington.

Turn Island, is a 34-acre (14 ha) island in the San Juan Islands in the Salish Sea in the U.S. state of Washington. The island sits in the San Juan Channel about 900 feet off the eastern edge of San Juan Island. It is preserved as Turn Island Marine State Park and is part of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The island has 12 campsites and is only accessible by water.

Upright Channel Park is a former unit of the Washington State Park System consisting of 20 acres (8.1 ha) of island, beach, and tidelands on Upright Channel in the northwest corner of Lopez Island. The park was not listed as a Washington State Parks property as of March 2014. San Juan County assumed management of the property per a memorandum of understanding in May 2014.

Orcas Village (sometimes just called Orcas or Orcas Landing) is an unincorporated community located at southeastern corner of the West Sound watershed on Orcas Island in San Juan County, Washington, United States. It is where the Washington State Ferry lands on the island, and consequently handles all vehicular traffic to and from the island.While the island can also be accessed by Orcas Island Airport or by private boats, the ferry connection means that most people enter and leave the island through this small village, which consequently has restaurants, small grocery, and gift shops. It is home to the Orcas Hotel—built 1904 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982—and also has a small public dock, a private marina, and parking for islanders who commute off-island by ferry. It is designated as an activity center under San Juan County's comprehensive plan.

Puget Sound is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in northwest portion of Washington state encompassing Clallam, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom Counties. It is the only Washington AVA located west of the Cascade Mountains. Puget Sound (or the "Sound") is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean extending about 190 mi (306 km) south from Admiralty Inlet and Juan de Fuca Strait to Olympia. It contains 13,100 sq mi (8,384,000 acres) of land, 150 sq mi (388 km2) of fresh water, and 2,500 sq mi (6,475 km2) of saltwater. The viticultural area lies entirely within the land basin surrounding the Sound. The Puget Sound viticultural area contains approximately 55% of the watershed's land area and water or 7,150 sq mi (4,576,000 acres) of land and 1,500 sq mi (3,885 km2) of water for a total area of 8,650 sq mi (5,536,000 acres). It has a maximum length of 190 mi (306 km) from north to south and 60 mi (97 km) from east to west, although it is most often less than 45 mi (72 km) wide. The AVA was established by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Treasury on October 4, 1995 after reviewing a petition submitted by Gerard and Jo Ann Bentryn of Bainbridge Island Vineyards & Winery in Bainbridge Island, Washington, proposing a new viticultural area within the State of Washington to be known as "Puget Sound." The region is almost entirely within hardiness zone 9a.

Elwha Rock is a submerged rock in Puget Sound. It lies in Cayou Channel (formerly known as Harney Channel) just west of Orcas Island's Grindstone Harbor at a depth of 5 feet (1.5 m) mean low water.It was named for the ferry MV Elwha which ran aground on the then-uncharted rock in 1983. The ferry Nisqually ran aground on the same rock in 1994.The Washington Board on Geographic Names approved the name in December 1989.The rock was incorporated within San Juan Islands National Monument in 2013.
