Outão Lighthouse

The Fort of Santiago do Outão is a former coastal military installation in Setúbal, Portugal that is currently the site of the Hospital Ortopédico Sant'Iago do Outão. The fort is located on the Costa Azul at the northern side of the Sado River's mouth.

The river Sado (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsaðu]) is a river in southern Portugal; it is one of the major rivers in the country. It flows in a northerly direction (the only major Portuguese river to do so) through 175 kilometres (109 mi) from its springs in the hills of Ourique before entering the Atlantic Ocean in an estuary in the city of Setúbal.The estuary is the habitat of a large community of bottlenose dolphins; there are 31 members of the pod, each of whom has been named (2007). The river is dammed in several places, chiefly for irrigation of rice, maize, and other vegetables. In its course, the river crosses the city of Alcácer do Sal.

The Albarquel Fort (Forte de Albarquel in Portuguese) is located on the beach of the same name, on the northern banks of the mouth of the river Sado, in the Municipality and District of Setúbal, in Portugal.

The Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal, also referred to as the São Filipe Castle or the São Filipe Fortress, is in the city of Setúbal in the Setúbal District, of Portugal. The fort was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal), who personally witnessed the laying of the cornerstone of the new fortification in 1582. It stands in a dominant position on the right bank of the mouth of the Sado River, overlooking the centre of Setúbal to its east and guarding access to the river. Named after the king during the Iberian Union, the fortress was designed by Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino and had the Italian military engineer Filipe Terzi, who worked for the Spanish Royal Court, as its chief engineer. It was completed in 1600 under the guidance of Leonardo Torreano due to the death of Terzi.

The Fort Santa Maria da Arrábida (Forte de Santa Maria da Arrábida in Portuguese) also referred to as Fort Nossa Senhora da Arrábida (Forte de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida in Portuguese), Fort of Arrábida (Forte da Arrábida in Portuguese) and Fort of Portinho da Arrábida, is located at the foot of the southern slope of the mountain range of the same name, in a dominant position to southwest of Portinho da Arrábida, on the northern bank of the Sado River, in the Municipality and District of Setúbal, in Portugal. It complements the set of 18th century fortifications built during the Portuguese Restoration War, along the coast from Setúbal to the Fort São Domingos da Baralha, near Cape Espichel. It currently contains the Luís de Saldanha Oceanographic Museum.

The Roman ruins of Creiro are situated in the Arrábida Natural Park above Creiro Beach in the Setúbal District of Portugal. They are ruins of a fish-salting factory and Roman baths, dating back to the days when the province of Lusitania formed part of the Roman Empire.

The Roman ruins of Tróia is an archaeological site located on the left bank of the River Sado, on the northwest side of the Tróia Peninsula, opposite Setúbal, in the Setúbal District of Portugal. The ruins, which include fish processing facilities, thermal baths, and burial sites are from between the 1st to 6th centuries CE. They have been classified as a Portuguese National Monument since 1910.

The Feu Guião Palace, Feu Guião Family Palace or Palace of the Adeantado, (Portuguese: Palácio Feu Guião), is an old mansion located in the Troino neighborhood, in the parish of São Julião, Nossa Senhora da Anunciada e Santa Maria da Graça, in Setúbal. It was built in the 18th century and restored from significant disrepair starting 2017.

The Monastery of Jesus (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Jesus) is a historical religious building in Setúbal, Portugal, which served a monastery of Poor Clare nuns. It is one of the first buildings in the Manueline style, the Portuguese version of late Gothic. The cloisters of the complex houses a museum of the monastery (Museu de Jesus). In 2013, pan-European heritage organization Europa Nostra declared the monastery to be one of the 7 most endangered monuments in Europe.

St. Julian's Church (Portuguese: Igreja de São Julião) is an 18th-century church located on the Praça de Bocage in Setúbal, Portugal. It is the main church (matriz) of the city classified as National Monument in 1910.

The District of Setúbal (Portuguese: Distrito de Setúbal [sɨˈtuβal, -βɐl] ) is a district located in the south-west of Portugal. It is named for its capital, the city of Setúbal.

Setúbal (, US also , Portuguese: [sɨˈtuβal, -βɐl] ; Proto-Celtic: *Caetobrix) is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The population of the entire municipality in 2014 was 118,166, occupying an area of 230.33 km2 (88.9 sq mi). The city itself had 89,303 inhabitants in 2001. It lies within the Lisbon metropolitan area, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Lisbon downtown by road. In the times of Al-Andalus the city was known as Shaṭūbar (Andalusian Arabic: شَطُوبَر [ʃeˈtˤuːbɑr]), after the old pre-Roman name of Cetobriga. In the 19th century, the port was called Saint Ubes in English, and Saint-Yves in French. The municipal holiday is 15 September, which marks the date in 1860 when King Pedro V of Portugal officially recognised Setúbal as a city.
