Setúbal District

Setúbal (, US also , Portuguese: [sɨˈtuβal, -βɐl] ; Proto-Celtic: *Caetobrix) is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The population of the entire municipality in 2014 was 118,166, occupying an area of 230.33 km2 (88.9 sq mi). The city itself had 89,303 inhabitants in 2001. It lies within the Lisbon metropolitan area, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Lisbon downtown by road. In the times of Al-Andalus the city was known as Shaṭūbar (Andalusian Arabic: شَطُوبَر [ʃeˈtˤuːbɑr]), after the old pre-Roman name of Cetobriga. In the 19th century, the port was called Saint Ubes in English, and Saint-Yves in French. The municipal holiday is 15 September, which marks the date in 1860 when King Pedro V of Portugal officially recognised Setúbal as a city.

St. Julian's Church (Portuguese: Igreja de São Julião) is an 18th-century church located on the Praça de Bocage in Setúbal, Portugal. It is the main church (matriz) of the city classified as National Monument in 1910.

The Monastery of Jesus (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Jesus) is a historical religious building in Setúbal, Portugal, which served a monastery of Poor Clare nuns. It is one of the first buildings in the Manueline style, the Portuguese version of late Gothic. The cloisters of the complex houses a museum of the monastery (Museu de Jesus). In 2013, pan-European heritage organization Europa Nostra declared the monastery to be one of the 7 most endangered monuments in Europe.

The Our Lady of Grace Cathedral (Portuguese: Sé Catedral de Santa Maria da Graça) also called Setúbal Cathedral is the name given to a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church that works as the Cathedral of Setúbal, a city in Portugal. It is located in the heart of the primitive medieval town of Setúbal, around which the most important medieval district of the city as well as the religious and administrative center developed. Founded in the thirteenth century, the current building is a reconstruction of the High Renaissance with a Mannerist facade. Inside are frescoed columns and tiles of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. On a side street is the Gothic porch of an old house, the Hospital João Palmeiro.

The Feu Guião Palace, Feu Guião Family Palace or Palace of the Adeantado, (Portuguese: Palácio Feu Guião), is an old mansion located in the Troino neighborhood, in the parish of São Julião, Nossa Senhora da Anunciada e Santa Maria da Graça, in Setúbal. It was built in the 18th century and restored from significant disrepair starting 2017.

Estádio do Bonfim (Bonfim Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in Setúbal, Portugal. It is currently used primarily for football matches for Vitória F.C. The stadium was built in 1962 and was able to hold 18,694 spectators. Currently, holds 15,497 spectators.Estádio do Bonfim enjoys a prime location within Setubal less than 1.0 km from the main railway station and the historic city centre. It used to be one of the most modern infrastructures in Portugal. In the present day the stadium is outdated although being one of the main symbols of the Setúbal city and Portuguese football. On 4 February 2019, the ground staged Belenenses SAD's home Primeira Liga fixture against Moreirense F.C. due to the condition of the pitch at their regular venue, the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras. The game attracted only 298 spectators, the lowest in the history of Portugal's top division.

The Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal, also referred to as the São Filipe Castle or the São Filipe Fortress, is in the city of Setúbal in the Setúbal District, of Portugal. The fort was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal), who personally witnessed the laying of the cornerstone of the new fortification in 1582. It stands in a dominant position on the right bank of the mouth of the Sado River, overlooking the centre of Setúbal to its east and guarding access to the river. Named after the king during the Iberian Union, the fortress was designed by Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino and had the Italian military engineer Filipe Terzi, who worked for the Spanish Royal Court, as its chief engineer. It was completed in 1600 under the guidance of Leonardo Torreano due to the death of Terzi.

The Azeda Lighthouse went into operation on 6 June 1940 at the Quinta da Azeda in Setúbal, in Setúbal District, Portugal. Initially the light was mounted in a hut on a hill but new housing construction made it difficult to see and in 1996 a 31-metre tall cylindrical tower was constructed. The lighthouse is situated about 3 kilometres inland. In addition to supporting the light, the tower also functions as a water tower for the town of Setúbal.The first lighthouse, built in June 1940, had a fixed red light. It was 6.5 metres tall with an altitude of 72 metres. The dioptric lens was of the 6th order and the range was 8 nautical miles. This was quickly replaced in December of the same year by an 8th-order reflective dioptric lens that extended the range to ten nautical miles. In March 1985, the fixed light was adapted to emit flashes.As it was becoming difficult to see the structure during the day and was even difficult to see the light at night due to new construction in the vicinity, a cylindrical tower was constructed in 1996 and opened in October. It was painted white with two red bands near the top. The base of the tower has an altitude of 61 metres and the tower is 31 metres tall. The light is a yellow Isophase light emitting 3-second flashes every six seconds, with a range of 22 nautical miles. It is technically known as the Azeda/Setúbal Entrance Range Rear Light.

The Albarquel Fort (Forte de Albarquel in Portuguese) is located on the beach of the same name, on the northern banks of the mouth of the river Sado, in the Municipality and District of Setúbal, in Portugal.

The Roman ruins of Tróia is an archaeological site located on the left bank of the River Sado, on the northwest side of the Tróia Peninsula, opposite Setúbal, in the Setúbal District of Portugal. The ruins, which include fish processing facilities, thermal baths, and burial sites are from between the 1st to 6th centuries CE. They have been classified as a Portuguese National Monument since 1910.

Castle of Palmela is a castle in Portugal. It is classified as a National Monument. The Castle of Palmela is located in the village, parish and county of the same name, district of Setúbal, in Portugal . In Setúbal Peninsula, in the east side of the Arrábida mountain range, it is situated between the estuaries of the River Tagus and Sado River, near the mouth of the latter. It is part of the Costa Azul, in Arrábida Natural Park.

Igreja de Santiago de Palmela is a church in Portugal. It is classified as a National Monument.
