The Afton Street Conservation Reserve is situated along the middle reaches of the Maribyrnong River in Essendon West, Melbourne. It is within the City of Moonee Valley and is 17 hectares (42 Acres).

Maidstone tram depot is a future depot on the Yarra Trams network in Melbourne. To be built off Hampstead Road near the corner of Williamson Road, Maidstone, it will be the home depot for the G class trams and was the site of the former Maribyrnong Migrant Hostel. The project will involve building a spur pair of tracks west on Williamson Road from tram route 82 to turn South into Hampstead Road and then turn west into the new facility.

Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre was an Australian immigration detention facility in Maribyrnong, Victoria. The centre was originally opened in 1950, as the Maribyrnong Migrant Hostel, then later the Midway (Migrant) Hostel in the late 1960s. The Phillip Migrant Hostel was added later. It closed on 31 December 2018.The Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre was opened in 1983, set up for people who had over-stayed their visas, had their visa cancelled, or who had been denied entry into the country through international airports and seaports. Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre was operated by Global Solutions Limited, formerly part of Group 4 Securicor on behalf of the Australian Government from 27 August 2003, along with all other Australian immigration detention centres until at least 2009.Most of the original facility became "The Student Village" (a student accommodation facility for two antecedents of Victoria University, plus RMIT and University of Melbourne) in 1989. Victoria University took over sole responsibility for the student accommodation in the 1990s. In the 2000s what was the Phillip Hostel was demolished and redeveloped as private housing. In January 2016 a report revealed that Maribyrnong was the harshest immigration prison in Australia, with guards handcuffing and using force against detainees at a far higher rate than in other immigration prisons.

Avondale Heights is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km (6.8 mi) north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Moonee Valley local government area. Avondale Heights recorded a population of 12,388 at the 2021 census.Avondale Heights is located on a plateau bounded by a large bend of the Maribyrnong River to the east, south, and west, and to the north by Buckley Street. The suburb derives its name from the Avondale Estate. Originally known as Maribyrnong West, when the Council undertook to change the name, postal authorities drew attention to the existence of Avondale in Queensland. The suburb was therefore called Avondale Heights to distinguish it from the Queensland town. Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin prepared plans for part of the area: Milleara Estate in the north (also known as City View) in the 1920s. One objective of their design was to remake suburbia and society. They did this through creating internal gardens where communities could both physical and socially bind together. They imagined children's playgrounds, social centres, nature reserves and links with an intricate system of pedestrian ways. Interviewed in Melbourne in 1913, Griffin spoke of internal reserves as: ...favourite playgrounds. Here all the children from the different houses can play together, where their mothers can see them, and where they are safe from the motor traffic in the streets. The streets are designed in a curvilinear way typical of Griffin's design, often following the topography of the land. There is only one main road – Military Road which runs from Canning Street and Maribyrnong Road, then becoming Milleara Road at the Avondale Heights Police Station. There are about 40 shops at the Canning Street end (including Raglan Street) and 20 at the other end, near the St Martin De Porres Primary School.

Maribyrnong College, also known as Maribyrnong Secondary College, and formerly known as Maribyrnong High School, is a government-funded secondary day school that specialises in sports, located in Maribyrnong in the inner western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Students enrol based on local residence and/or in the selective sports academy. The school offers an accelerated learning program to prospective students who demonstrate academic ability. It is located on River Street, Maribyrnong (formerly Maidstone until this part of Maidstone was rezoned in the 1990s). Founded in 1958, as Maribyrnong High School, a state-of-the-art sports complex opened on 22 June 2010.

Rosehill Secondary College is located in Niddrie, Victoria, Australia. In 1959, it was established as Niddrie Technical School, a single-building all-boys school. The school was renamed as 'Niddrie Secondary College' and became co-educational in the early 1990s. In 2009 it was renamed again to be 'Rosehill Secondary College', after Rosehill Road which it has a boundary on. As of 2014, the number of enrolments exceed 1,150, with many students travelling from outside Niddrie or adjacent suburbs. Rosehill's facilities include: refurbished art rooms, visual communication and design and multimedia suite, a suite of fully equipped science rooms, a STEP learning centre which provides gifted students with the facilities to excel at higher level, purpose-built studies centres for both year 11 and year 12 students respectively, comprehensive technology facilities (materials and non-materials), a state-of-the-art computer network and first class eLearning infrastructure, a gymnasium (ECA), a weights training room, basketball and tennis courts, large Library and a middle school classroom hub. Rosehill Secondary College is situated on the border of Essendon West and Niddrie and sits on a site elevated high above Steele Creek, with views over the Maribyrnong River Valley. The school is a single campus with students from Years 7 to 12. The enrolment in 2014 is 1140. Girls and boys are about equal in number. Rosehill SC has International Student accreditation. The college has a balance of experienced and younger staff with three Assistant Principals, each with a discrete area of responsibility. The College runs four, 75 minute periods per day and the school is divided into a Junior School (Years 7–9) and a Senior School (Years 10–12). In 2014, the Junior School has 650 students and the Senior School 490. All students in Years 7–9 study Math, Science and English and choose six elective subjects from Languages (Japanese or Italian), The Arts, Physical Education and Health, Humanities and Technology; also, Literacy and Numeracy Enhancement studies. All Year 10 students study English and Math (differentiated groupings), and eight electives from the KLAs and VCE subjects; also, an interdisciplinary unit on health, drug education, driver education, and Pathways into VCE and beyond. Students in Years 11 and 12 select a VCE or VCAL pathway, with the school offering careers and further education pathways to all its students. The College employs consultants and coaches in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy and has worked closely with a network of schools in the development of the Science Curriculum as well as the more effective use of digital technologies as an instructional and learning tool. The school also provides four enrichment programs. Maidstone is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 8 km (5.0 mi) north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located with the City of Maribyrnong local government area. Maidstone recorded a population of 9,389 at the 2021 census.The suburb predominantly consists of residential areas. A large chunk of the north-western corner encompasses a private golf club and there is a small industrial zone in the centre. Maidstone is bounded by Suffolk Street to the south, Ashley Street to the west, along Summerhill Road and Rosamond Road to the east, and along Williamson Road and Rosamond Road to the north and north-east.

Melbourne's Living Museum of the West is an ecomuseum and community social history museum in Melbourne's western suburb of Maribyrnong. It was established as part of Victoria's sesquicentenary (150 year anniversary) in 1984, along with the Children's Museum and the Museum of Chinese Australian History.
