St John's Church, Newland

Newland is a suburb of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in the north-west of the city, a former village on the Hull to Beverley turnpike. Before the mid 18th century Newland was a hamlet in a partially swampy agricultural area, located near the crossroads of Cottingham and Beverley-Hull turnpikes. Extensive enclosure and drainage took place after 1766, and it briefly developed as a preferred place for Hull merchants in the 19th century. The future parish church, St John's, was built in 1833, and in 1862 the ecclesiastical parish of Newland was established as separate from Cottingham in the East Riding. By the beginning of the 20th century the urban spread of Hull had reached Newland, and over the next half century the village was surrounded by housing and other developments. The modern area of Newland includes and the former site of the Kingston upon Hull Municipal Training College (est. 1913), later the University of Humberside and now part of the neighbouring Hull University (est. 1925), as well as the Newland Park estate, and the Newland Avenue areas. Other notable structures in the area include the former Endsleigh convent (orig. built 1876, expanded), and former Sailor's Orphan's Homes (1890s), and the modern Humberside Police headquarters (2012). The Newland area extends along Clough Road to the River Hull – east of the Cottingham/ Beverley Road crossroads, where the area is in primarily industrial and commercial use. On the banks of the Hull is a chemical works of the Croda company.

Beverley Road (known in local parlance as Bev Road) is one of several major roads that run out of the city of Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The road is noted for being a major arterial route into, and out of Hull. It also known for its student population and being the location of a shop (Turners), whose slogan was used by the pop band, Everything But the Girl. In 1994, just over 1-mile (1.6 km) of the road was designated as a conservation area.

The A1079 is a major road in Northern England. It links the cities of York and Kingston upon Hull, both in Yorkshire. The road is noted for its past safety issues, and regularly features in the Road Safety Foundations reports on Britain's most dangerous roads. Campaigners have been calling for the entire route to be made into a dual carriageway.

St Nicholas Primary School is a coeducational primary school in Newland, Kingston upon Hull, England, for pupils aged 4 to 11.

The New Adelphi Club is a popular local venue for alternative live music in the city of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It has achieved notability outside its local area, having hosted such bands as The Stone Roses, Radiohead, Green Day and Oasis, in its over-30 year history. The club opened in October 1984, and Kaiser Chiefs performed there as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations in 2014.

Beverley Road railway station was a station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway, and served the Beverley Road area of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It opened on 27 July 1885 and closed to passengers on 14 July 1924 after the London and North Eastern Railway had built the Spring Bank chord to Hull Paragon.

Sculcoates power station supplied electricity to Kingston upon Hull and the wider East Yorkshire area from 1898. An earlier 1893 station in Dagger Lane had operated public lighting in Hull Old Town. Sculcoates power station was built and operated by Kingston upon Hull Corporation on a site in Sculcoates Lane adjacent to the Beverley and Barmston Drain. The power station was increased in size as demand for electricity grew, it was redeveloped several times: including major rebuilds in 1927–29 and in 1938–1952. The power station was closed in 1976 and was subsequently demolished.

Hull Grammar School was a secondary school in Hull, England, founded around 1330 and endowed in 1479 by the prelate John Alcock. In 1988, as part of a restructure by the Local Education Authority, the site was renamed William Gee School. Meanwhile, Hull Grammar School relocated to the old Marist College site on Cottingham Road, becoming a fee paying school in 1989, only to merge with Hull High School in 2005 to form the Hull Collegiate School (renamed in 2021 Tranby School).

Pearson Park, originally known as the People's Park is a park in the west of Kingston upon Hull, England. It is situated about 1 mile (1.5 km) north-west of the city centre of Hull with its main entrance on Beverley Road and its western boundary adjoining Princes Avenue.The park was established in 1862 through the gift of land by Zachariah Pearson, and was the first public park in the city.

Stepney is an area of Kingston upon Hull within the larger area of Sculcoates, north of the city centre on the (A1079) Beverley-Hull main road. Before the mid-19th century the place was a small hamlet outside the urban area of Kingston upon Hull.

Newland Allotments is a historic community garden established in the 1800s and located in the suburb Newland in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is one of 21 sites across the city. Sitting within 22 acres of land, and with 270 plots on site, it is the largest allotment site in the city and East Yorkshire. The allotment site is classified as statutory, providing protection under the Allotments Act 1925. As statutory allotments, they cannot be sold or repurposed without the consent of the Secretary of State.

Stepney railway station is a disused railway station on the York and North Midland Railway's Victoria Dock Branch Line in Stepney, Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was first opened on 8 May 1848 and closed in November 1854. It was reopened on 1 June 1864, before closing permanently on 19 October 1964. Located on the Victoria Dock Branch Line which looped around the old part of the city, people could catch trains to stations on the lines serving the seaside resorts of Hornsea or Withernsea. Tickets were purchased in the small wooden building opposite the station building. Diesels took over from steam in January 1957. After the station closed, the lines through it were still used for goods trains until 1968. The few trains still travelling across Hull were diverted to the high level ex Hull and Barnsley Line which looped the city further north. The station house is now a grade II listed building. An old map of the area shows coal and timber sidings to the south of the station building. The main station building is now used as a community and education centre.
