Wynyard railway station (England)

Butterwick is a small village in County Durham, England. It is situated a short distance to the south east of Fishburn. Butterwick is first mentioned in 1131, when it is called "Boterwyck" meaning the butter or dairy farm. The West, South and East Butterwick Farms of today are the surviving remains of this small medieval village, the earthwork remains of which still survive in and around the modern farm buildings.

Thorpe Larches is a small hamlet in County Durham in North East England, situated between Sedgefield and Stockton-on-Tees. There are approximately 21 buildings, 19 of which are houses, and the other two a car garage and a packaging warehouse. The hamlet has around 60 residents. Embleton is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Sedgefield, in the County Durham district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, in England, as well as the site of a medieval village and manor. It is situated 3 miles (5 km) east of Sedgefield and 4 miles (6 km) west of Hartlepool. In 1961 the parish had a population of 80. The township was historically named "Elmdene", supposedly derived from the site's proximity to a woodland of elm trees which, at an earlier time, flourished in the bordering dene. A single farmstead now occupies the site which lies adjacent to the ruins of a small church (originally a manorial chapel of ease) dedicated to the Virgin Mary.From the 13th to the mid 16th century the manor was the seat of the Elmeden family who assumed the local name. The village was one of nearly 1,500 medieval villages to be abandoned in the 14th century after the collapse of the demesne system of land management. It afterwards passed in the female line to the Bulmers and Smythes and in the 18th century to the Tempests of Wynyard, ancestors of the Marquesses of Londonderry.Embleton Tower is a Grade I listed Peel tower in the village, which previously incorporated the vicarage.

Grindon is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Grindon and Thorpe Thewles, in the Stockton-on-Tees district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, England. The civil parish population at the census 2001 was 2,603 reducing to 2,484 at the 2011 Census. It is situated between Sedgefield and Stockton-on-Tees, near to Thorpe Thewles and Thorpe Larches. The place name of "Grindon" is derived from the word 'dun', which meant hill. Grindon is situated in the Upland Fells, formed of Carboniferous millstone grit. "The alternating strata of harder and softer rocks give a stepped profile to many dale sides and distinctive flat-topped summits to the higher fells."

Wynyard, sometimes known as Wynyard Hall, is a large English country house near Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham. The house was the English family seat of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry, an Anglo-Irish aristocratic dynasty, until it was sold to Sir John Hall in 1987.

Thorpe Thewles railway station was a stop on the Castle Eden branch of the North Eastern Railway (NER) from 1880 to 1931. It was located approximately 5 miles north of Stockton and was designed to serve the village of Thorpe Thewles and the civil parish of Grindon in Stockton-on-Tees, part of the Ceremonial County of Durham, North East England. Despite its name, the station was actually located further from the village of Thorpe Thewles than Carlton station (later Redmarshall) on the main line of the Clarence Railway.

Holy Trinity Church was a now demolished church in the village of Thorpe Thewles, County Durham, England. It was built in 1848–49 to replace an isolated church on a different site which had been dedicated to Thomas à Becket. The Thomas à Becket church is now in ruins and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is also a scheduled monument.Holy Trinity Church was designed by the Lancaster architects Sharpe and Paley at an estimated cost of £600, and could seat 175 people. It measured 68 feet (20.7 m) by 23 feet 6 inches (7.2 m) but by the 1880s it was suffering from decay and damp, and was demolished.It was replaced on the same site in 1886–87 by the present church, dedicated to St James. This church is a Grade II listed building.

The 2005 Seve Trophy took place 22–25 September at Wynyard Golf Club, in North East England. The team captain for Great Britain and Ireland was Colin Montgomerie, with the captain for Continental Europe being José María Olazábal. The overall tournament host was Seve Ballesteros as he was unable to compete through injury. The trophy was retained for the second time by Great Britain and Ireland.

Wynyard Golf Club is a golf club situated in the village of Wynyard near Sedgefield, County Durham, England. The course was built in 1996 alongside the building of the Wynyard Estates development and was designed by Hawtree. The Wellington Course has been acknowledged by the European Tour as a high-quality golf course. As a result, Wynyard Golf Club was chosen to host the 2005 Seve Trophy between Great Britain and Ireland and Continental Europe. The trophy was won 16½–11½ by Great Britain and Ireland. The course has also hosted one of the qualifying stages for the European Tour (PQ1). The highest finishers moved on to the next stage before earning the tour cards for the next year. Also, it has hosted Challenge Tour events alongside local charity events.

Hurworth Burn railway station was a railway station on the Castle Eden branch of the North Eastern Railway (NER) from 1880 to 1931. It was located between the embankment carrying the railway over Hurworth Burn Reservoir (to the north) and the bridge carrying the line over the Hart to Trimdon road (known as Hurworth Burn Road) (to the south). As well as serving the then relatively new reservoir, the station primarily served a few scattered hamlets though it was also the nearest station to the village of Sheraton.

Pike Whin Bog is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Easington district of east County Durham, England. It is situated just east of Hurworth Burn Reservoir, about 8 km west of Hartlepool. The bog lies in a natural depression, in which the water table is at or above ground level for most of the year, and is one of the few remaining wetlands in lowland Durham. The majority of the site is sedge fen, in which common cotton-grass, Eriophorum angustifolium, is the dominant species. A variety of grassland types occur around the edges of the fen. Because of the scarcity of wetlands in lowland Durham, species associated with this habitat also have a very localised distribution. Particularly noteworthy at Pike Whin Bog are greater spearwort, Ranunculus lingua, slender tufted sedge, Carex acuta, marsh stitchwort, Stellaria palustris, and bog bean, Menyanthes trifoliata.

Thorpe Thewles is a village which had history dating back to the 12th century. The village shares a parish with Grindon and is in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, Northern England. It lies near the A177 road between Stockton-on-Tees and Sedgefield.
