Calumet (East Chicago)

The U.S. Smelting and Lead Refinery Inc. site, commonly known as USS Lead, is a superfund site located in East Chicago, which is located in northwest Indiana. The site includes part of the former USS Lead facility along with nearby commercial, municipal, and residential areas. Originally the site was used as a lead ore refinery with the surrounding businesses at the time performing similar operations. Through a history of redlining and racial discrimination brought on by the 1920 Urban Renewal Campaign, it is seen that East Chicago’s minority community is subject to the consequences of the contamination and has led to claims of environmental racism. The primary contaminants of concern for this area are lead and arsenic, both of which when in the human bloodstream, cause numerous health effects. The site is currently undergoing testing and remediation. This Superfund site is broken down into two Operable Units. The first, OU1, has been divided into three zones, these being the public housing complex and residential properties. OU2 includes soil at the former USS Lead facility, as well as groundwater in and around the site.

E.J. Block Athletic Field is a stadium in East Chicago, Indiana that opened in 1942. It is primarily used for amateur and professional baseball, and is the home field of the Calumet College of St. Joseph's Crimson Wave Baseball team which play in the CCAC. It is also the home park of the East Chicago Central High School baseball team and the East Chicago Post 369 American Legion summer baseball team.

Washington Park or Park Addition is a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, near the city park with which it shares its name. It is bounded on the north by U.S. Route 12, and on the south by 144th Street.

The Brickyard was a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, near the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and Gannister Court. It stood for much of the 20th century, housing approximately 30 primarily African American families, until the City of East Chicago demolished it in the mid-1990s due to contamination from the adjacent Pollution Control Industries (PCI) hazardous waste mixing facility.

Prairie Park is a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana. It is bounded on the north by U.S. 12 (Columbus Avenue), and on the south by Indiana 312 (Chicago Avenue). To the west, it looks across Elm Street at the Washington Park neighborhood, and to the east it is bounded by the Cline Avenue expressway and industrial northern Gary beyond.As of the 2010 United States Census, Prairie Park had 812 residents, of whom 46.2% were African American and 48% were Hispanic. The population was down from 946 in 2000. There are approximately 300 homes in the neighborhood.Prairie Park is known as one of East Chicago's more diverse and affluent neighborhoods. It is home to the Block Middle School, Washington Elementary School, and the main building of the East Chicago Public Library.

Washington High School was a public high school in East Chicago, Indiana, which opened in 1898 but closed in 1986. Washington High School merged with Roosevelt High School to become East Chicago Central High School, known in the area as "Central."

Hessville is a neighborhood of Hammond, Indiana. Located in the southeast corner of Hammond, it adjoins the Hammond neighborhood of Woodmar to the west, the East Chicago neighborhood of Calumet to the north, the Gary neighborhoods of Westside and Black Oak to the east, and the town of Highland to the south. Notable natural areas in Hessville include the Carlson Oxbow Park, Gibson Woods, and the Seidner Dune and Swale preserve operated by the Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Much of the neighborhood is built on a former dune and swale landscape.Notable people from Hessville include Jean Shepherd, whose movie A Christmas Story is set in a fictionalized version of mid-20th-century Hessville.The town was founded by local merchants Joseph and Elizabeth Hess in 1852. Hessville was incorporated in 1918, but following a legal battle its incorporation was invalidated. The town was annexed by Hammond in 1923.

Sunnyside is a neighborhood in easternmost East Chicago, Indiana, in the Indiana Harbor section near Cline Avenue. It is unique among East Chicago neighborhoods for its suburban character, including a curvilinear street grid. The population is 55% African American and 42% Hispanic. The neighborhood has one of the highest rates of owner-occupied homes in the city.The neighborhood was built over the first half of the 20th century by Inland Steel as employee housing. The first 100 houses, brick duplexes housing 200 families, were built in 1918. Another 100 units were built in the 1940s in response to the post-World War II housing shortage. Inland Steel retained ownership, renting the homes to employees, until 1969 when it began selling them off. Some additional homes were built in the 1970s.Notable people from Sunnyside include basketball coach Gregg Popovich and venture capitalist Tim Draper.

East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Marktown, Clayton Mark's planned worker community.

In Hammond, Indiana, where 165th Street meets the border of Gary, a barrier or dike was constructed in the early 1980s to keep toxic flood water out. The once controversial barrier remains there to this day.

New Addition, also called West Harbor, is a small triangular neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, west of Kennedy Avenue, east of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, and north of United States Route 12. As of 2013, it was home to approximately 263 people.Like several other East Chicago neighborhoods including Marktown and Roxana, New Addition is wholly surrounded by industrial land,. It is home to a small park, a community center, and a branch campus of Ivy Tech Community College.Built in the early 20th century, the neighborhood originally provided housing for steelworkers in the nearby mills, particularly American Steel Foundries. In the 1920s, it was one of the few neighborhoods available to African American residents in East Chicago. As a result, it was targeted in 1959 for demolition in the name of urban renewal. The neighborhood was saved from demolition by local activists including Rev. Vincent L. McCutcheon.The view from much of the neighborhood is dominated by petroleum storage tanks associated with the Whiting Refinery.

Indiana Harbor Public Library, also known as Grand Boulevard Carnegie Library, is a historic Carnegie library located at 3605 Grand Boulevard in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. It was built in 1913, and is a one-story, Arts and Crafts style brick building on a raised basement. An addition was constructed in 1931. The building has a clay tile hipped roof and an entry porch supported by square brick columns. The building was constructed with a $20,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation.: 5–6 The library was abandoned in 1983, and its interior woodwork plundered. The property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Since 2005, efforts have been made by the City of East Chicago Department of Redevelopment and the Carnegie Performing Arts Association to save the building and begin a $4-million renovation.
