East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Marktown, Clayton Mark's planned worker community.

The Brickyard was a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, near the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and Gannister Court. It stood for much of the 20th century, housing approximately 30 primarily African American families, until the City of East Chicago demolished it in the mid-1990s due to contamination from the adjacent Pollution Control Industries (PCI) hazardous waste mixing facility.

Washington High School was a public high school in East Chicago, Indiana, which opened in 1898 but closed in 1986. Washington High School merged with Roosevelt High School to become East Chicago Central High School, known in the area as "Central."

E.J. Block Athletic Field is a stadium in East Chicago, Indiana that opened in 1942. It is primarily used for amateur and professional baseball, and is the home field of the Calumet College of St. Joseph's Crimson Wave Baseball team which play in the CCAC. It is also the home park of the East Chicago Central High School baseball team and the East Chicago Post 369 American Legion summer baseball team.

Washington Park or Park Addition is a neighborhood in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago, Indiana, near the city park with which it shares its name. It is bounded on the north by U.S. Route 12, and on the south by 144th Street.

Indiana Harbor Public Library, also known as Grand Boulevard Carnegie Library, is a historic Carnegie library located at 3605 Grand Boulevard in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. It was built in 1913, and is a one-story, Arts and Crafts style brick building on a raised basement. An addition was constructed in 1931. The building has a clay tile hipped roof and an entry porch supported by square brick columns. The building was constructed with a $20,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation.: 5–6 The library was abandoned in 1983, and its interior woodwork plundered. The property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Since 2005, efforts have been made by the City of East Chicago Department of Redevelopment and the Carnegie Performing Arts Association to save the building and begin a $4-million renovation.

North Harbor is a neighborhood in northeastern East Chicago, Indiana. It constitutes the portion of the Indiana Harbor section north of 138th Street. The neighborhood is home to one of the highest concentrations of affordable housing in the United States.The north end of North Harbor's residential area is just south of East Chicago's marina district, home to the Ameristar Casino East Chicago, the Jeorse Park beach, and the East Chicago marina. As of 2016, city plans called for the construction of a pedestrian overpass that would enable North Harbor residents to walk to the marina district by 2022. Beyond the marina district lies the vast manmade peninsula that houses the Indiana Harbor Works operated by ArcelorMittal.

School City of East Chicago often shortened to SCEC is a school district headquartered in East Chicago, Indiana. The district serves all of East Chicago.

Indiana Harbor or The Harbor is the portion of East Chicago, Indiana located east of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, as opposed to "East Chicago proper" which is located west of the canal. It contains several distinct neighborhoods, including New Addition, Sunnyside, and North Harbor. The Calumet neighborhood is west of the Canal but sometimes considered distinct from "Indiana Harbor proper".Although Indiana Harbor has never been a separate town, it has often been referred to as one since its establishment in 1901. Historically, Indiana Harbor was more working-class than East Chicago proper, with a population dominated by workers at Inland Steel and related plants. Rivalries between Indiana Harbor and the rest of East Chicago are common.Mexican-American settlement in Indiana Harbor began during the steel strike of 1919. By 1928, Indiana Harbor was home to one of the largest Mexican-American communities in the Midwest. The neighborhood has retained a substantial Mexican population, and hosts an annual Mexican Independence Day parade.Historic structures in the neighborhood include the Indiana Harbor Public Library, a Carnegie library which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The main East Chicago Public Library is also located in Indiana Harbor. Notable people from Indiana Harbor include federal judge Gonzalo Curiel.

Marktown is an urban planned worker community in East Chicago, Indiana, United States, built during the Progressive Era in 1917 from marshland to provide a complete community for workers at The Mark Manufacturing Company.The Marktown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Northside or North Side is a neighborhood in western East Chicago, Indiana. Together with Southside and Roxana, it makes up "East Chicago proper," as distinct from Indiana Harbor. The population is 72% Hispanic and 21% African American. The neighborhood has one of the highest rates of owner-occupied homes in the city. Notable landmarks in Northside include the East Chicago City Hall and Central High School. Northside is bounded on the north by Columbus Drive (United States Route 12) and on the south by the commercial corridor along Chicago Avenue (Indiana State Road 312). To the east, the residential area is bounded by Indianapolis Boulevard; beyond that lies the industrial district along the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. To the west, Northside adjoins North Hammond. To the north, it is bounded by the Lake George branch of the Canal; beyond that lies a vast industrial district that includes the Whiting Refinery and the East Chicago Confined Disposal Facility. Prior to the 20th century, Northside was a wooded dune and swale area, which saw little settlement during the first years of East Chicago's existence. The neighborhood's first settler was reputedly an agent for the East Chicago Company named John Brennell. In the early twentieth century, Northside became the preferred destination for wealthier, native-born Americans, in contrast to the poorer immigrant residents in other parts of East Chicago. In 1910, 75% of the neighborhood's heads of household were born in the United States, while the remainder largely hailed from England or Wales.The neighborhood was chosen by local elites because it "stood far enough from industry to escape the worst of the noise and pollution," but was still within walking distance of the commercial and industrial centers. The pattern was reinforced by restricted housing developments that promised to sell to "Americans only".The neighborhood attempted to preserve its exclusive status in 1944 by opposing construction of the Sinclair Oil tank farm at the neighborhood's north end, on the south bank of the Ship Canal. Although successful in the local government, the refinery opponents were ultimately defeated in the state courts.

Southside or South Side is a neighborhood in western East Chicago, Indiana. Together with Northside and Roxana, it makes up "East Chicago proper," as distinct from Indiana Harbor. The population is 64% Hispanic and 25% African American. The neighborhood is home to 20% of East Chicago's population. The neighborhood is dominated by residential properties, with relatively few institutional buildings.Southside is bounded on the north by the commercial corridor along Chicago Avenue (Indiana State Road 312), and on the south by the Grand Calumet River. To the east, the residential area is bounded by Indianapolis Boulevard; beyond that lies the industrial district along the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. To the west, Southside adjoins North Hammond. Southside was the site of the very first home built in East Chicago, that of William H. Penman (later East Chicago's first mayor), built in 1888. Most of the residential development in East Chicago's first decades, prior to the 20th century, took place in this neighborhood.
