Horotiu

Horotiu railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand serving Horotiu. It was a 'flag station', originally 3 mi (4.8 km) north of Te Rapa and 4 mi (6.4 km) south of Ngāruawāhia and named Pukete. The station was moved just over a mile to the north in 1880, to be 76 mi (122 km) from Auckland. It seems no explanation was given for the controversial move. The station changed its name from Pukete to Horotiu on 23 June 1907.Traffic remained light, amounting to £49 in 1901. It was converted to a switch-out station in 1909, equipped with distant signals in 1916, when the AFFCO sidings opened, and had other alterations to signalling and interlocking in 1934, with extension of automatic signalling from Mercer to Frankton. In 1930 Frankton to Horotiu (6 mi 55 ch (10.8 km)) was double tracked, with automatic signalling also extended 34 mi 72 ch (56.2 km) to Mercer. Horotiu's power interlocking was the first automatic operation of main line points in the country, replacing home and distant signals, Wood's locks (a single key for signal and facing points, named after S P Woods of McKenzie and Holland) and the tablet station. The 3 mi 54 ch (5.9 km) north to Ngāruawāhia was double track from 5 December 1937.

The Te Rapa cogeneration plant is a 44 MW cogeneration plant owned and operated by Contact Energy. It is located at the Fonterra dairy factory, at Te Rapa near Hamilton in New Zealand, and was commissioned in 1999.The construction of the plant came as part of a wider upgrade to the dairy factory proposed in 1997. The original capacity applied for under the Resource Management Act was 150 MW, but there was opposition from Greenpeace about the carbon dioxide emissions and Tainui about pollution of the Waikato River; Subsequently the planned capacity was reduced to 45 MW and the change was announced at an Environment Court prehearing. The Waikato Times reported that “Greenpeace was pleased [with the change] but said even the smaller plant would pump out 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide”.The plant is based on a gas turbine (a GE frame 6B) that can produce up to 44 MW of electricity. Hot exhaust gases from the turbine are ducted to a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) to raise steam. The HRSG has duct burners to increase steam output, which can be up to 180 tons of steam per hour.The cogeneration plant is designed for flexible operation, and can provide electricity to the dairy factory, export electricity to the local network or import electricity for use in the dairy factory. A common operating mode is 30 MW of electricity exported and 15 MW plus 120 tons per hour of steam provided to the dairy factory.A 127 MW gas/diesel fired auxiliary boiler is used when the cogeneration plant is not in operation.Fonterra has been authorised by the Waikato Regional Council to install and commission an alternative combustion plant if the co-generation plant ceases to be available.

The Waipā River is in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. The headwaters are in the Rangitoto Range east of Te Kūiti. It flows north for 115 kilometres (71 mi), passing through Ōtorohanga and Pirongia, before flowing into the Waikato River at Ngāruawāhia. It is the Waikato's largest tributary. The Waipā's main tributary is the Puniu River. In the headwaters upstream of Ōtorohanga the river can be very clear during low flow conditions. This section of the river flows through rough farmland and patches of native bush. In this clearer part of the river there can be very good fly fishing for trout but access to the river may be limited without landowner permission. The Waipā is prone to flooding in its lower reaches as flood flows can be over 100 times—20 to 560 m3/s (710 to 19,780 cu ft/s)—those of dry flows and the river can rise up to 11 m (36 ft).In 2013 Maniapoto Māori Trust Board and the riparian local councils set up a joint management agreement for the river, following the passing of Nga Wai o Maniapoto ( Waipā River) Act 2012. On 16 July 2020 the official name was gazetted as Waipā River.

Burbush is a semi-rural suburb in western Hamilton in New Zealand. It is one of the future urban zones of Hamilton, The southern part of Burbush includes Baverstock. Burbush was taken into Hamilton with the 10th city extension in November 1989. Until then it had been in the Waipa County Council area. Prior to the 1863 invasion of the Waikato the area was occupied by Ngāti Koura, Ngāti Ruru and Ngāti Ngamurikaitaua, all being Tainui hapū.

St Petersburg is a suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. In the 2013 census it was in meshblock 0951707, which was part of Sylvester area and had a population of 822 in 240 houses. In 2018 that meshblock was split into 4 meshblocks and is part of Flagstaff South. Others also describe it as part of Flagstaff.A 2012 photo shows Petersburg Drive without any housing.At peak hours in school terms it is served by bus 4N, which started to run on 18 January 2016, and had increased services in 2017.

Horsham Downs is a locality about 9.5 km north of Hamilton. Before 1906, the area was undeveloped, covered with teatree and ferns. After August 1906 sheep and cattle farms were successfully developed.A group of protected areas, the Horsham Downs Wildlife Management Reserves, are located in Horsham Downs.

Rotokauri railway station (formerly Te Rapa railway station), also known as The Hub, is a railway station, park and ride, and bus station in north Hamilton, New Zealand serving Rotokauri and Te Rapa. Located on the North Island Main Trunk, it was previously a flag station, and was closed in January 1971. It reopened as an integrated transport hub in 2021 as part of Te Huia services between Hamilton and Papakura (extended to The Strand in 2022). Services started on 6 April 2021.

Te Kowhai is a small rural town situated 15 km north west of Hamilton City in New Zealand. It consists of mainly dairy and cattle farms and also includes a small dairy/takeaway, fresh vegetable and fruit store, cafe, bakery, a large park with a playground and skate park, and mechanics shop. Te Kowhai Aerodrome is situated near the township. The town is popular for new subdivisions. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "the kōwhai tree" for Te Kōwhai.

Magellan Rise is a new suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. In the 2018 census it is at the boundaries of Flagstaff North, East and South areas and is described by others as Flagstaff.The area was rezoned for development in 2005 and there were houses to the east of Te Awa O Katapaki Stream by 2009. It was still being marketed in 2020 by the developer, CDL Land New Zealand Limited, who also developed the adjacent Ashmore subdivision.Lake Magellan was created by damming Te Awa O Katapaki Stream to provide stormwater treatment. It was upgraded in 2019, following a 2013 modelling of flooding in the area.A culvert rebuild in 2013 made the stream more accessible for eels and other fish. Parts of the stream valley, including Te Awa o Katapaki Reserve, provide a cycle track.Buses on the Orbiter route serve Discovery Drive at 15 minute intervals.

The Base is a regional shopping centre located in Te Rapa, in the New Zealand city of Hamilton. The centre consists of the original outdoor strip mall, and the more recent Te Awa enclosed shopping mall.

Pukete is a 1970s riverside suburb in northwestern Hamilton in New Zealand.The cobblestoned walk in the park has a grass dog exercise area. The riverside walkway, which includes many pedestrian bridges, can be used by walkers or cyclists, but the lower sections are subject to flooding in winter. A pedestrian bridge links Braithwaite Park to Flagstaff on the eastern side of the Waikato River. A 2015 River Plan proposed it become 'a flower garden bridge'.There is a small beach on the west side of the river at Braithwaite park often used in summer by water skiers and picnickers. To the north of the residential area is the Pukete Mountain Bike track, an Equestrian centre, and a two-lane launching ramp into the Waikato River, all on the Pukete Farm Park. A concreted riverside track, for bikes and pedestrians, runs north from Mountain View Lane starting by the southeast side of the Fonterra Te Rapa Milk powder factory.The eastern part of Pukete and neighbouring St Andrews is built on an old river terrace. This rises to the flat alluvial fan that covers most of Hamilton. The land rises to one of Hamilton's many small hills at Ngaio Place giving views over most of Hamilton.Four-laning of the Pukete Bridge was completed in Easter 2013, well ahead of schedule due to the long dry summer.

Lake Rotokauri is located approximately 7 km to the northwest of Hamilton, New Zealand. It is a peat lake, and is one of the Waipa Peat lakes. The lake has a maximum depth of four metres and the open water covers approximately 77 hectares. Lake Rotokauri drains into the Waipā River via the Ohote Stream.The lake catchment area has a mixture of land uses including residential, industrial and pastoral.
