Magellan Rise is a new suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. In the 2018 census it is at the boundaries of Flagstaff North, East and South areas and is described by others as Flagstaff.The area was rezoned for development in 2005 and there were houses to the east of Te Awa O Katapaki Stream by 2009. It was still being marketed in 2020 by the developer, CDL Land New Zealand Limited, who also developed the adjacent Ashmore subdivision.Lake Magellan was created by damming Te Awa O Katapaki Stream to provide stormwater treatment. It was upgraded in 2019, following a 2013 modelling of flooding in the area.A culvert rebuild in 2013 made the stream more accessible for eels and other fish. Parts of the stream valley, including Te Awa o Katapaki Reserve, provide a cycle track.Buses on the Orbiter route serve Discovery Drive at 15 minute intervals.

Ashmore is a name used for a suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand by Hamilton City Council on its 2010 map and by the developer, CDL Land New Zealand Limited. It is more commonly described as being part of Rototuna North. It is in Rototuna Central census area.

St Petersburg is a suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. In the 2013 census it was in meshblock 0951707, which was part of Sylvester area and had a population of 822 in 240 houses. In 2018 that meshblock was split into 4 meshblocks and is part of Flagstaff South. Others also describe it as part of Flagstaff.A 2012 photo shows Petersburg Drive without any housing.At peak hours in school terms it is served by bus 4N, which started to run on 18 January 2016, and had increased services in 2017.

Rototuna is a suburb in northern Hamilton, New Zealand, east of Flagstaff. It is one of the newest and fastest-growing suburbs in Hamilton, along with neighbouring Huntington and Flagstaff. Sometimes the name Rototuna is used to collectively refer to all of the city north of Wairere Drive and east of the Waikato River, including Flagstaff, St Petersburg, Magellan Rise, Ashmore, Somerset Heights, St James, Callum Brae and Huntington.Although many Hamilton City publications say it was built on what was previously the bed of an ancient lake of which Rototuna was a tiny remnant, Lake Tunawhakapeka was to the north in Horsham Downs. However, its alternative name of Lake Rototuna, was the inspiration for the name given to a new post office in 1907 and later adopted for the area. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "eel lake" for Rototuna.

The Te Rapa cogeneration plant is a 44 MW cogeneration plant owned and operated by Contact Energy. It is located at the Fonterra dairy factory, at Te Rapa near Hamilton in New Zealand, and was commissioned in 1999.The construction of the plant came as part of a wider upgrade to the dairy factory proposed in 1997. The original capacity applied for under the Resource Management Act was 150 MW, but there was opposition from Greenpeace about the carbon dioxide emissions and Tainui about pollution of the Waikato River; Subsequently the planned capacity was reduced to 45 MW and the change was announced at an Environment Court prehearing. The Waikato Times reported that “Greenpeace was pleased [with the change] but said even the smaller plant would pump out 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide”.The plant is based on a gas turbine (a GE frame 6B) that can produce up to 44 MW of electricity. Hot exhaust gases from the turbine are ducted to a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) to raise steam. The HRSG has duct burners to increase steam output, which can be up to 180 tons of steam per hour.The cogeneration plant is designed for flexible operation, and can provide electricity to the dairy factory, export electricity to the local network or import electricity for use in the dairy factory. A common operating mode is 30 MW of electricity exported and 15 MW plus 120 tons per hour of steam provided to the dairy factory.A 127 MW gas/diesel fired auxiliary boiler is used when the cogeneration plant is not in operation.Fonterra has been authorised by the Waikato Regional Council to install and commission an alternative combustion plant if the co-generation plant ceases to be available.

Flagstaff is a suburb in north-east Hamilton, New Zealand. It was originally called Dulverton on council plans, but it was officially named Flagstaff in 1986 when it was declared as a suburb. The area was heavily developed in the 1990s.Sometimes the name Rototuna is used to collectively refer to all of the city north of Wairere Drive and east of the Waikato River, including Flagstaff and its developments of St Petersburg and Magellan Rise.The name "Flagstaff" comes from the flagstaff that was located on the hillock at the western end of Sylvester Road in the 1870s. A flag was raised by the local farmer when a steamer passed to alert the port authorities in the settlement 7 km further south. Flagstaff is connected to Pukete by a 5 m wide pedestrian bridge that connects with a series of walkways on both banks of the Waikato River. The suburb is served by a shopping centre with parks for 50 cars. It has 18 shops and a gym. Two playgrounds serve the new suburbs in northern Flagstaff at Hare Puke Park and Te Huia Reserve.

Somerset Heights is a suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand, often known as Huntington, or Rototuna. The name Rototuna is also often used to include Grosvenor, Callum Brae, Huntington and St James. Somerset Heights forms part of Te Manatu census area.In 2000 Somerset Heights Ltd got consent for 107 houses on 13.1 ha (32 acres). Buchanan Place and Westbury Mews were named by Somerset Heights Joint Venture in 2002, using classical English names. A transmission line was taken down and replaced by a cable under Barrington Drive to allow Somerset Heights to be built.The Thomas Homestead at 219 Gordonton Road was built in 1929 on 100 acres (40 ha), part of which is now Somerset Heights.The Rototuna Circular bus has provided a half hourly service through the area since 2018.Waikato Waldorf school and Te Manatu Park are on the edge of Somerset Heights.Alligator weed was a problem in the Somerset Heights sediment pond, requiring it to be dredged in September 2005. Somerset Heights is at the head of Kirikiriroa gully, where cabbage trees, grey willow, hawthorn, Astelia grandis, whekiponga and ferns grow. The area covered wooded sites increased due to vegetation restoration, such as that around the pond.

Harrowfield is a suburb in eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. It was built in about 1991.Part of Tauhara Park borders the suburb. The park has a mini golf area, a playground, sports fields and walkway/cycleway paths, which connect Harrowfield to the Kirikiriroa Stream valley, Queenwood and Flagstaff. Some of the park, on the far side of Wairere Drive, covers the old Rototuna landfill. Since the late 1990s much of the leachate from the landfill has been collected for disposal at Pukete sewage works. However residents were expressing concerns about it in 2012.Christmas lights in the suburb attract many visitors.In 2017 development of a further 22 dwellings, including 8 duplexes, was approved. Previous developments were on plots of around 1,200 m2 (13,000 sq ft), rather than the higher 320 m2 (3,400 sq ft) density of the new one, which backs on to Wairere Drive.

Pukete Bridge is a concrete box girder bridge in Hamilton, New Zealand, spanning the Waikato River. The bridge connects the western and eastern stretches of Wairere Drive. In February 2011 an upgrade began including expand the number of lanes from two to four. It was originally expected to be completed in late 2013, but was finished in May 2013. During the early part of 2011 thousands of tonnes of earth were removed by truck and taken 3 km to build up 2 large earth ramps as part of the New Zealand State Highway 1 bypass at Horotiu. As the original road had been built largely in a gully, this included the removal of trees and other vegetation planted on the gully sides to block traffic noise. The existing cycle lane will be incorporated in the new roadway and a new three-metre-wide cycle and pedestrian clip-on added on the southern side of the bridge. By Easter 2013 4 laning was complete. The cycle lane has acoustic barrier of blue and yellow plastic panels which prevent views of the river from vehicles on the south side. The yellow panels signify the kowhai trees lining the banks of the river, and the blue panels represent the water and sky. The north side of the bridge has been lined with crash barriers to prevent cars crashing into the river after an accident. A driver was killed in 2012 after her 4-wheel drive went out of control and plunged through the barrier into the river.Traffic at Pukete Bridge in 2006 was 25,200 vehicles a day. In 2018 it was 38,400.

Callum Brae is a suburb in north-eastern Hamilton in New Zealand. It part of the Rototuna South census area. Hamilton City Council includes Callum Brae as part of Rototuna. Estate agents refer to the area as Rototuna, which is often used to include Callum Brae and other neighbouring suburbs, such as Grosvenor, Somerset Heights, Huntington and St James. In 2012 Hamilton Libraries said Callum Court is in the suburb of Rototuna. It was named in 2000 by Bramley Ltd., the developer, following a theme of naming all streets in the Callum Brae development with Scottish names.Tauhara Park lies to the west of Callum Brae. Work was done in 2002 to prevent methane from the old Rototuna landfill migrating to Callum Brae and monitoring continues. The leachate is also collected.Bus 16 has served Callum Brae at half hourly intervals since 2018.

Pukete is a 1970s riverside suburb in northwestern Hamilton in New Zealand.The cobblestoned walk in the park has a grass dog exercise area. The riverside walkway, which includes many pedestrian bridges, can be used by walkers or cyclists, but the lower sections are subject to flooding in winter. A pedestrian bridge links Braithwaite Park to Flagstaff on the eastern side of the Waikato River. A 2015 River Plan proposed it become 'a flower garden bridge'.There is a small beach on the west side of the river at Braithwaite park often used in summer by water skiers and picnickers. To the north of the residential area is the Pukete Mountain Bike track, an Equestrian centre, and a two-lane launching ramp into the Waikato River, all on the Pukete Farm Park. A concreted riverside track, for bikes and pedestrians, runs north from Mountain View Lane starting by the southeast side of the Fonterra Te Rapa Milk powder factory.The eastern part of Pukete and neighbouring St Andrews is built on an old river terrace. This rises to the flat alluvial fan that covers most of Hamilton. The land rises to one of Hamilton's many small hills at Ngaio Place giving views over most of Hamilton.Four-laning of the Pukete Bridge was completed in Easter 2013, well ahead of schedule due to the long dry summer.

Hamilton Ecological District is part of the Waikato Ecological Region in New Zealand's North Island. It occupies the Hamilton basin and surrounding foothills, and has been heavily modified with less than two percent of its indigenous vegetation remaining. This location has been studied significantly including the process of restoration ecology.C. Michael Hogan has classified the undisturbed portions of the woodland area as a beech and podocarp forest with associate understory ferns being Icarus filiformis, Asplenium flaccidum, Doodia media, Hymenophyllum demissum, Zealandia pustulata and Dendroconche scandens, and some prominent associate shrubs being Olearia ranii and Alseuosmia quercifolia.
