Topoľčany District

Práznovce (Hungarian: Práznóc) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 it had 962 inhabitants.

The Bebrava is a river in western Slovakia. It rises in the Strážovské vrchy mountains near the village of Čierna Lehota, flowing at first south-west, turning after some 10 km into south, flowing through Bánovce nad Bebravou, finally pouring into the river Nitra near Topoľčany. It is 47 km (29 mi) long and its basin size is 631 km2 (244 sq mi).

The Topoľčany pogrom was an antisemitic riot in Topoľčany, Slovakia, on 24 September 1945 and the best-known incident of postwar violence against Jews in Slovakia. The underlying cause was resurgent antisemitism directed at Jewish Holocaust survivors who demanded the return of property that had been stolen during the Holocaust. Rumors spread that a local Catholic school would be nationalized and the nuns who taught there replaced by Jewish teachers. On the morning of the incident, women demonstrated against the nationalization of the school, blaming Jews. That same day, a Jewish doctor was vaccinating children at the school. He was accused of poisoning non-Jewish children, sparking a riot. The police were unable to prevent it, and a local garrison of soldiers joined in. About forty-seven Jews were injured, and fifteen had to be hospitalized. In the immediate aftermath of the events, international coverage embarrassed the Czechoslovak authorities and the Czechoslovak Communist Party exploited the riots to accuse the democratic authorities of ineffectiveness. A 2004 documentary film about the rioting, Miluj blížneho svojho ("Love thy neighbor"), sparked increased discussion of the history of these events. The next year, the mayor of Topoľčany issued an official apology.

Topoľčany ([ˈtɔpɔʎtʂani] (listen); Slovak: Veľké Topoľčany before 1920; Hungarian: Nagytapolcsány) is a town in the Nitra Region of Slovakia. The population is around 25,000 in total. The town's population is nicknamed Žochári (singl. Žochár) (producers, or owners of "mosses"). The Nitra River flows through a wide valley between the two mountain ranges that are visible from the town: Tribeč (to the east) and Považský Inovec (to the west).

Horné Chlebany (Hungarian: Felsőhelbény) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 it had 361 inhabitants.

Nitrianska Streda (Hungarian: Nyitraszerdahely) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 it had 731 inhabitants.

Tovarníky (Hungarian: Tavarnok) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. Formerly, it was a part of Topoľčany, later the village became independent.

Čeľadince (Hungarian: Családka) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 had a population of 446 inhabitants.

Solčianky (Hungarian: Szolcsányka) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 it had 269 inhabitants.

Chrabrany (Slovak pronunciation: ['xrabranɪ]; Hungarian: Nyitragaráb) is a municipality in the Topoľčany District of the Nitra Region, Slovakia. In 2011 it had 763 inhabitants. The village Chrabrany forms a core of municipality. It is situated on the right bank of the Nitra river, three kilometres south of Topolcany. A settlement has existed on the area of the village since the Prehistoric era and later in the times of Great Moravia; however the first mention of the municipality in written texts dates from 1291. In this period the village was a part of county of Chrabor family, in 1687 of the Hungarian noble family Erdődy (also Erdödy, Erdődi).
