Glen Finart

Ardentinny (Scottish Gaelic: Àird an t-Sionnaich or Àird an Teine) is a small village on the western shore of Loch Long, 14 miles (23 km) north of Dunoon on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scottish Highlands. Nearby is Cruach a Chaise (Cheese Hill), while on the opposite side of Loch Long is the village of Coulport, home of RNAD Coulport, the storage and loading base for the UK's Trident Nuclear Defence Force. The name Ardentinny means "hill of fire", deriving either from the ancient rite of lighting fires to the god Bel on 1 May or, more likely, from warning fires to aid mariners. It was the fife of the McInturner's Baron's Craigcoll, Ardentinny & Glenfinart before they were murdered by Clan Campbell for supporting Clan Lamont in the reign of Robert the Bruce. The ferry between Ardentinny and Coulport was summoned by a fire and was used by the Dukes of Argyll travelling between Dunoon, Inveraray and Rosneath Castle and in later years by drovers from Argyll travelling to the markets in Central Scotland. The village has two hotels catering for the general public. The Ardentinny Outdoor Centre is run by Actual Reality, which has two centres in Cowal. The local economy is reliant on tourism and agriculture, with major employers being the hotel, the outdoor centre and the caravan park. There is one working fishing boat based in Ardentinny, trawling for prawns. Residents also work in Dunoon and across the Clyde. The village is served by the 489 (direct) and 486 (via Kilmun) bus service to and from Dunoon. There are many holiday home rentals now being offered to tourists, as Ardentinny is within Argyll Forest Park, which is itself within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.The Ardentinny Hotel was struck by lightning on 19 May 2014. It re-opened in June 2017, after refurbishment, as a bar and bistro named The Ardentinny.

Beinn Ruadh (664 m) is a mountain of Argyll and Bute in Scotland. Part of the Grampian Mountains, it lies between Loch Eck and Loch Long in Argyll Forest Park. A large and sprawling peak, its lower slopes are covered in forestry plantations. The nearest town is Dunoon a few miles to the south.

Royal Naval Armaments Depot Coulport, shortened to RNAD Coulport, on Loch Long in Argyll, Scotland, is the storage and loading facility for the nuclear warheads of the United Kingdom's Trident programme. The base, near the village of Coulport, has up to 16 reinforced concrete bunkers built into the hillside on the eastern shore of Loch Long. It is the last depot in Britain to retain the "RNAD" designation, indicating a Royal Naval Armaments Depot. The depot was established during the Cold War as the storage, maintenance and loading facility for Polaris nuclear weapons. Today, Coulport is mainly used for handling Trident warheads. Two docks are located on the shoreline at the foot of the hill. There, weapons are loaded onto Vanguard-class nuclear submarines before they go on patrol and unloaded before they return to base at nearby Faslane. An older jetty is known as the Polaris Jetty, while the newer, covered Explosive Handling Jetty (EHJ) is used for handling Trident warheads.

Loch Long is a body of water in the council area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Sea Loch extends from the Firth of Clyde at its southwestern end. It measures approximately 20 miles (30 kilometres) in length, with a width of between one and two miles (two and three kilometres). The loch also has an arm, Loch Goil, on its western side. Its name is not a reference to is length; it actually comes from the Gaelic for "ship lake". Prior to their defeat at the Battle of Largs in 1263, Viking raiders sailed up Loch Long to Arrochar, and then dragged their longships 2 miles overland to Tarbet and into Loch Lomond. Being inland, the settlements around Loch Lomond were more vulnerable to attack.Loch Long forms part of the coast of the Cowal peninsula, and forms the entire western coastline of the Rosneath Peninsula. Loch Long was historically the boundary between Argyll and Dunbartonshire; however, boundary redrawing in 1996 bmeant that it moved wholly within the council area of Argyll and Bute. The steamboat Chancellor used to traverse the loch, departing Dunoon at 11:00 and returning about five hours later. PS Waverley was also built to serve Loch Long and Loch Goil from 1947, a route that she still sailed as of 2021, albeit as more of an attraction than a primary means of transport.

Carrick Castle is a village on the western shore of Loch Goil, 7 km south of Lochgoilhead by a minor road along the loch shore, on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is within the Argyll Forest Park, and also within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. In 1877 a wooden pier was built at the castle, and a three-storey tenement building called Hillside Place was constructed inland from the castle, to provide apartments for visiting tourists. This was followed by several villas built along the shore road as accommodation for Glasgow merchants, developing what became a small village.The village church is listed on the buildings at risk register of Scotland. There is a path to Ardentinny from Carrick Castle village.

Coulport (Scottish Gaelic: An Cùl Phort - literally the Back Port or Ferry) is a village on the east side of Loch Long, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is 5 miles (8 km) north-north-west of Cove on the Rosneath peninsula. It marks the end of the B833 shore road, although the village can also be reached by a high-quality but unclassified access road (primarily designed for naval traffic) directly from Garelochhead. The village looks across to the small settlement of Ardentinny on the west shore to which, in the 18th/19th century, there was a ferry. John Kibble, the son of a Glasgow metal merchant, was one of several wealthy Glasgow merchants who had large villas built at Coulport in the nineteenth century either as permanent residences or summer retreats. Several still survive, some now flatted, others in a dilapidated condition. Kibble's Coulport House was the original location of the giant conservatory known as the Kibble Palace (now in Glasgow's Botanic Garden).Since the 1960s Coulport has been most associated with the Trident missile storage and the nearby Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD Coulport) situated there as part of HMNB Clyde.

Coylet is a hamlet on Loch Eck, Cowal peninsula, Argyll and Bute, in West Scotland.The hamlet is within the Argyll Forest Park, which is itself within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It developed around the Coylet Inn, a coaching inn on the A815 road that leads to Dunoon, the main town on the peninsula. The name may be derived from Gaelic caol ait, "narrow place".

Puck's Glen is a river-formed ravine on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, with a popular scenic walking trail beside the Eas Mòr stream (Gaelic for "big waterfall"). In 2020 the glen and adjoining trails were closed temporarily due to COVID-19 restrictions, issues of stability of the gorge, and felling of trees infected by larch disease.It comes under Forestry and Land Scotland which has highlighted it as a feature of the Argyll Forest Park (itself within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park), and described it as "One of the most magical forests in Scotland, with a delightful trail along a rocky gorge."The stream tumbles down a series of waterfalls and rapids, joining the River Eachaig about 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) south of the entrance to the Benmore Botanic Garden. A car park off the A815 road (about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from Dunoon on the road to Loch Eck) gives access by a track to the foot of the glen path, as well as forest paths giving an alternative route to the top of the glen.

Blairmore is a village located on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Blairmore lies within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It is situated on the western shore of Loch Long and around 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Strone. The village was largely built during the Victorian era and has a small wooden pier which dates to 1855.

Old Kilmun House is an historic building on Midge Lane in Kilmun, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Now Category A listed, it was built, in the early 18th century, in foothills overlooking the Holy Loch from its northern shores.Historic Environment Scotland describes it as one of the most important buildings in the parish, and in a national sense due to its six-bay layout. "Few houses combine such classical features with an asymmetrical façade," they wrote. It is two storeys.Since its original construction, which reused stone from a 16th- or 17th-century building, it was extended to the rear in the 19th century, as well as an early 20th-century addition to its southwestern corner. In the second half of the 19th century, a large addition was made to its northwestern corner. The earlier parts of the building are of rubble with sandstone dressing, while the later block is fine ashlar.The garden and boundary walls are also of Category A listed status. To the west of this were two large buildings which had been demolished by the end of the 19th century. Part of the garden was used for the western edge of the cemetery of the adjacent Kilmun Parish Church and Argyll Mausoleum.

Benmore Botanic Garden (formerly known as the Younger Botanic Garden) is a large botanical garden situated in Strath Eachaig at the foot of Beinn Mhòr, on the Cowal peninsula, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The gardens are on the west side of the A815 road from Dunoon, between the Holy Loch and Loch Eck, and include footbridges across the River Eachaig. It is one of the sites of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Features include a Redwood Avenue of Giant Sequoias planted in 1863, large square walled gardens, a waterfall, a fernery, ponds and walks up the hillside to viewpoints over the Holy Loch. The garden is located within the Argyll Forest Park, which forms part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Kilmun Parish Church and Argyll Mausoleum in Kilmun, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, consists of St Munn's Church (a Category-A-listed building but no longer a parish church of the Church of Scotland), as well as the adjacent mausoleum of the Dukes of Argyll and a historically significant churchyard. The complex is located on the summit of a slight knoll about ten metres from the shoreline of the Holy Loch on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll, Scotland. The existing church dates from 1841 and occupies the site of an older, medieval church. A partly ruined tower from the medieval period still stands to the west of the present building.
