The 1961 Holtaheia Vickers Viking crash (Norwegian: Holtaheia-ulykken) was a controlled flight into terrain incident on 9 August 1961 at Holta in Strand, Norway. The Eagle Airways (later, British Eagle) Vickers 610 Viking 3B Lord Rodney was en route from London Heathrow to Stavanger Airport, Sola on an AIR Tours charter flight taking a school group for a camping holiday. The aircraft was making an instrument landing when it crashed 54 km (34 mi) north east of Stavanger. All 39 people on board died.

Holta is a small farming village in the municipality of Strand in Rogaland county, Norway. The farm is situated on the northern hills overlooking the lake Bjørheimsvatn. It is approximately 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) northeast of the village of Tau and about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) south of the village of Fiskå. The city of Stavanger lies about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of Holta (via the Ryfylke Tunnel that goes under a large fjord). On 9 August 1961, the Holtaheia Accident took place as a Vickers VC.1 Viking passenger aeroplane, G-AHPM operated by Cunard Eagle Airways, transporting schoolboys from The Archbishop Lanfranc School in Thornton Heath, London, crashed into the mountainside above the farm (Holtaheia). A total of 34 students, two teachers and three crew members were killed.

About 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southeast of Tau is the municipal center of Jørpeland. This town is the largest settlement in Strand with about 7,000 people. The 262-square-kilometre (101 sq mi) municipality is the 278th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Strand is the 90th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 13,474. The municipality's population density is 57.2 inhabitants per square kilometre (148/sq mi) and its population has increased by 13.4% over the previous 10-year period.The cross-country and marathon mountain biker Gunn-Rita Dahle comes from Bjørheimsbygd. She has won a gold medal in the Summer Olympics 2004, in Athens. Holtaheia was the mountain behind Holta farm where 34 school boys, 2 teachers and 3 crew died, when the Cunard Viking flight 'Papa Mike' crashed into the mountain, en route to Stavanger.

Jørpeland Church (Norwegian: Jørpeland kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Strand Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the town of Jørpeland. It is the church for the Jørpeland parish which is part of the Ryfylke prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The large, gray, concrete church was built in a rectangular design in 1969 using designs by the architects Turid and Kristen Bernhoff Evensen. The church seats about 450 people.

Jørpeland is the administrative centre of Strand municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The town is located on the western coast of the mainland, along the shore of the Idsefjorden, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northeast of the city of Stavanger. It sits along the Norwegian National Road 13 a short distance southeast of the village of Tau where the Ryfast tunnel has its eastern entrance. The name "Jørpeland" is composed of the slightly changed Old Norse word "jarpr", which translates to brown, and the word land ("brownland"). The reason for this name is that historically, the river Jørpelandsånå used to turn brown during times of flood.The 4.09-square-kilometre (1,010-acre) town has a population (2019) of 7,230 and a population density of 1,768 inhabitants per square kilometre (4,580/sq mi). Jørpeland is also known as "Pulpit Rock City", because Jørpeland is nearest city to the Preikestolen, which attracts tourists from all over the world. The Preikestolen is a huge cliff overlooking the Lysefjorden and it sits about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southeast of Jørpeland. Jørpeland became designated as a town by the municipal council on 1 April 1998. Prior to that time it was simply considered a very large village. Jørpeland is divided into nine boroughs: Leite, Barka, Tungland, Barkved, Jøssang, Førland, Langeland, Grønnevoll, and Fjelde. The river Jørpelandsåna runs through the town before emptying into the fjord on the south side of the town.

Fiskå is a village in Strand municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located along the Årdalsfjorden, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northeast of the village of Tau. The small farming village of Holta is located a short distance south of Fiskå. The lake Vostervatnet lies just up the hill to the south of the village. The lake drains out through the river Fiskåna which flows through the village of Fiskå on its way to the fjord. All of the school children from northern Strand go to school in Fiskå. The Fiskå mølle mill has been grinding corn and selling it for centuries. It is one of the most significant businesses in the area.

Vostervatnet is a lake in the municipality of Strand in Rogaland county, Norway. The 2.62-square-kilometre (1.01 sq mi) lake lies in the northwestern part of Strand, just south of the Fognafjorden. The village of Tau lies about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) southwest of the lake. The main outflow of the lake is the river Fiskåna, which flows north from the northeastern corner of the lake, down the hill to the village of Fiskå on the shore of the fjord.

Rogaland is the centre of the Norwegian petroleum industry. In 2016, Rogaland had an unemployment rate of 4.9%, one of the highest in Norway. In 2015, Rogaland had a fertility rate of 1.78 children per woman, which is the highest in the country. The Diocese of Stavanger for the Church of Norway includes all of Rogaland county.

Preikestolen or Prekestolen (English: 'The Pulpit Rock', 'Pulpit', or 'Preacher's Chair') is a tourist attraction in the municipality of Strand in Rogaland county, Norway. Preikestolen is a steep cliff which rises 604 metres (1,982 ft) above Lysefjorden. Atop the cliff, there is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 metres (82 ft × 82 ft). Preikestolen is located near the Western part of the fjord, and on its North side. Tourism at the site has been increasing in the early 21st century, with between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors in 2012, making it one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. BASE jumpers often leap from the cliff. Due to its increased popularity, the most used path to the site (an 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) long hike) was improved by Nepalese Sherpas in 2013.

Idsal is an island in Strand municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The 3.1-square-kilometre (1.2 sq mi) island lies directly between the island of Idse and the mainland with the Idsefjorden and the Høgsfjorden on either side of the island. There are short bridge on the east and west sides of Idsal that connect it to the mainland and to Idse, respectively. Most of the island's 12 permanent residents live on the southwestern side of the island, however there are many holiday cottages located all over the island.

Lysefjord or Lysefjorden is a fjord located in the Ryfylke area in Rogaland county in southwestern Norway. The 42-kilometre (26 mi) long fjord lies in the municipalities of Strand and Sandnes, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of the city of Stavanger. The name means light fjord, and is said to be derived from the lightly coloured granite rocks along its sides. It is particularly well known for the huge Preikestolen cliff overlooking the fjord, which is a major tourist destination for the region. The fairly isolated village of Lysebotn lies at the eastern end of the fjord and the villages of Forsand and Oanes both lie at the western end of the fjord near the Lysefjord Bridge, the only crossing of the fjord.
