Turville Hill

Cobstone Mill was built around 1816 on Turville Hill in Buckinghamshire, England, and overlooks the village of Turville. It is a smock mill that replaced the original mill that had stood there since the 16th century. The machinery was previously used in another mill in the village of Lacey Green. It was a working mill grinding cereal until 1873. Later, squatters living in the mill caused a fire which damaged the centre post. After this time the mill went further into deterioration. In 1967, for the filming of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the mill was cosmetically restored. The cap was remoulded, and a new fantail and light wooden sails added. The mill and cottage were purchased in 1971 by Hayley Mills and her first husband Roy Boulting, and extensive conversions and remodelling of the interiors were completed as well as interior and exterior restoration and conversion of the mill. The mill has been used as a film location in other films and TV programmes including: Goodnight Mister Tom The New Avengers, "House of Cards" episode. Midsomer Murders, various episodes. Turville is a village and civil parish in Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the Chiltern Hills, 5 miles (8.0 km) west of High Wycombe, 6 miles (9.7 km) east-southeast of Watlington, 7 miles (11 km) north of Henley-on-Thames and 2 miles (3 km) from the Oxfordshire border. The name is Anglo-Saxon in origin and means 'dry field'. It was recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 796 as Thyrefeld. The manor of Turville once belonged to the abbey at St Albans, but was seized by the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1547. The manor house has since been rebuilt as Turville Park, and was held by the Hoare Nairne family for most of the 20th century. The present incumbent of the manor is Lord Sainsbury. Turville was home to Ellen Sadler, who fell asleep in 1871, aged eleven, and purportedly did not wake for nine years, becoming known as the "Sleeping Girl of Turville". The case attracted international attention from newspapers, medical professionals and the public. Rumours persist in the region that Sadler was visited by royalty for a "laying on of hands". The local pub is the Bull and Butcher. Turville Hill is a Site of Special Scientific Importance, and it includes Cobstone Windmill.

Fingest is a village in Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the Chiltern Hills near the border with Oxfordshire. It is about six miles WSW of High Wycombe. It lies in the civil parish of Hambleden. The parish church of St Bartholomew's dates from the early Norman period. It has an unusual tower, with a double vaulted roof. The church is a Grade I listed building.

Skirmett is a hamlet in the parish of Hambleden, in Buckinghamshire, England. It lies in the Hambleden Valley in the Chiltern Hills, between the villages of Hambleden and Fingest.

Cadmore, also known as Cadmore End, is a village in the civil parish of Lane End in the English county of Buckinghamshire. Historically Cadmore End was in two parishes and two counties. Part was a detached part of the parish of Lewknor in Oxfordshire, part of a division of the parish known as Lewknor Uphill consisting of three detached parts. Part of Cadmore End was a manor in the parish of Fingest in Buckinghamshire. In 1852 it became the separate ecclesiastical parish of Cadmore End, and in 1896 the Oxfordshire part of the parish was transferred to Buckinghamshire. The parish church of St Mary le Moor was built in 1851 and is a Grade II listed building. It replaced the mediaeval chapel with the same dedication at Ackhampstead.

Ibstone (previously Ipstone) is a village and civil parish within Wycombe district in Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the Chiltern Hills on the border with Oxfordshire, about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Stokenchurch. The village name is Anglo Saxon in origin and means 'Hibba's boundary stone', referring to the boundary with Oxfordshire. At the time of King Edward the Confessor the village was in the possession of Tovi, thane of the king, and was called Hibestanes. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, stands separate from the rest of the village; this is a common occurrence in places in this part of the country that had some standing in the pre-Roman Celtic period. The village includes Cobstone Windmill. The windmill was built around 1816 and is unusual in that it is a twelve-sided smock mill, still housing some of its original machinery. It was converted into a residency during the 1950s and then refurbished after 1971. It was also used as Caractacus Potts' workshop in the 1968 film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and seen in The New Avengers (TV series) episode, The House of Cards. The actress Hayley Mills and her film producer husband Roy Boulting owned the windmill and lived there in the early 1970s. The politician Barbara Castle also lived in the village. The common is an area of open access land and the standing stone (OS GR SU7507 9371) was erected for the Millennium -year 2000. Ibstone is the name given to a hymn tune composed in 1875 by Maria C. Tiddeman (1837–1915), music professor in Oxford University.

Southend is a hamlet, in the civil parish of Turville (where at the 2011 Census the population was included ) near to the village of the same name in Buckinghamshire, England. It lies in the Chiltern Hills at an elevation of 188m near the Oxfordshire border above and to the west of the Hambleden Valley. There are some houses and cottages around a rough village green and two small ponds.

Turville Grange is a large detached house in the village of Turville Heath in the English county of Buckinghamshire. It was built in the late 18th century and expanded and altered c.1890 for a Stephen Smith. It has been listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England since June 1955. A wing to the rear of the house was added by Walter Tapper in the 1900s.

Fayland Chalk Bank is a 0.6-hectare (1.5-acre) Site of Special Scientific Interest in Parmoor, south of Lane End in Buckinghamshire. It is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.The site is chalk grassland which has a diverse flora. The main grasses are red fescue, quaking grass and yellow oat grass. Orchids include the common spotted and pyramidal, and the profusion of chalk flowers and its south facing location make the site important for bees, grasshoppers and butterflies.The site is on private land with no public access.

Fayland House is a house in Buckinghamshire, England, in the Chiltern Hills between the villages of Skirmett and Hambleden. It was designed by David Chipperfield Architects. Fayland House is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Parmoor is a hamlet to the south of Frieth in the parish of Hambleden, in Buckinghamshire, England. It has a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Fayland Chalk Bank. In the 1870s, Parmoor House was the home of Henry Cripps, Q.C.. His son Charles Cripps, who inherited it in 1899, was ennobled in 1914 and took the title Baron Parmoor of Frieth. Between 1941 and 1946, the exiled King Zog of Albania lived at Parmoor House.
