Steinwasen Park

The English calamity (German: Engländerunglück) was a hiking disaster which took place on the Schauinsland near Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 17 April 1936. The tragedy unfolded when a group of twenty-seven English schoolboys were stranded after they were led up the mountain by their teacher, Kenneth Keast, who ignored multiple warnings of poor weather conditions. While hiking along the crest of the mountain, the ill-prepared group became disoriented due to fog and an ongoing snowstorm. With the intervention of residents from a nearby village, the majority of the group were returned to safety. Five students died from exhaustion. Following the tragedy, Keast gave a misleading account in which he denied culpability and insisted he was unaware of the imminent weather. He was hailed as a hero, and his true role in the accident remained unknown for decades. The Nazi regime used the incident to put forth a propaganda narrative presenting itself as a benevolent state despite worsening relations with the United Kingdom. Both the German and British governments declined to investigate the incident, in order to avoid jeopardising relations. It was not until the 2010s that the events leading up to the English calamity were more thoroughly re-examined.

The Schauinsland Pit (German: Grube Schauinsland, or Erzkasten in the 19th century) was a silver and lead mine east of Freiburg im Breisgau. From the 19th century zinc was also mined. The mine operated from the 13th century until 1954. Since 1997 Schauinsland Pit has been a show mine.

The Schauinsland (literally "look-into-the-country"; near Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany) is a mountain in the Black Forest with an elevation of 1,284 m (4,213 ft) above sea level. It is a popular destination for day trips. Due to the high amount of silver mining, it was previously known as "Erzkasten" (literally "ore box"); the name "Schouwesland" first appeared in 1347. The mountain is located roughly ten kilometres (6.2 miles) south-east of Freiburg's city centre.

Eugen-Keidel Tower is a 31-metre-high observation tower location on the Schauinsland mountain near Freiburg, Germany. It was built in 1981. The Eugen-Keidel Tower has an extraordinary design with a triangular cross section.

The Barbarastollen underground archive is an underground archive intended to preserve Germany’s cultural heritage from man-made or natural disaster. The Barbarastollen is located in a disused mine near Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It holds microfilms with about 1.12 billion images from German archives and museums.Among the documents stored here in microfilm facsimile are: treaty text of the Peace of Westphalia Bull by Pope Leo X threatening Martin Luther with excommunication coronation document of Otto I documents of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe original building plans for Cologne Cathedral. German Basic LawThe Barbarastollen tunnel is protected by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of UNESCO. It is a "refuge intended to shelter, in the event of armed conflict, the movable cultural property" according to article 1 sub-paragraph b. It is furthermore the only cultural property in Germany under special protection according to Chapter II of the convention, and one of only five such sites worldwide, the others being the Vatican City and three refuges in the Netherlands. It is named after Saint Barbara. The entire complex is buried under 400 meters of rock. It is intended to survive a nuclear war. It is estimated that its contents should survive for at least 500 years without any serious damage.

Oberried is a town in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. Oberried is home to the Barbarastollen caves, the central safekeeping archive of Germany. The Barbarastollen holds microfilms with millions of images from German archives and museums.

The Erlenbacher Hut (German: Erlenbacher Hütte) is an inn and cattle hut (Almhütte) on the Erlenbach stream (about 1,100 m above NN) in the Black Forest in Germany.

Todtnauberg is a German village in Black Forest (Schwarzwald) belonging to the municipality of Todtnau, in Baden-Württemberg. It is named after the homonymous mountain ("berg" means hill or mountain in German). It is famous because it is the place where the German philosopher Martin Heidegger had a chalet and wrote portions of his major work, Being and Time.

The Alpine Path (German: Alpine Pfad or Alpine Steig) is one of the highest hiking trails in the Black Forest. Between Hüttenwasen and Stübenwasen the path runs largely horizontally across the rocky northern mountainside of the Feldberg in southern Germany. The trail is 3½ kilometres long and was abandoned by the forestry authorities in order to encourage the development of nature.

The Stübenwasen (1,386 m above sea level (NHN)) is the sixth highest mountain in the Black Forest after the Feldberg (1,493 m above NHN), Baldenweger Buck (1,461 m above NHN), Seebuck (1,448 m above NHN), Herzogenhorn (1,415 m above NHN) and the Belchen (1,414 m above NHN). It is the highest point on the ridge between Schauinsland and Feldberg and is only separated from the latter by a wide saddle. To the north is the St. Wilhelm Valley, to the south the Wiesental with Todtnau and Todtnauberg.
