The Barbarastollen underground archive is an underground archive intended to preserve Germany’s cultural heritage from man-made or natural disaster. The Barbarastollen is located in a disused mine near Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It holds microfilms with about 1.12 billion images from German archives and museums.Among the documents stored here in microfilm facsimile are: treaty text of the Peace of Westphalia Bull by Pope Leo X threatening Martin Luther with excommunication coronation document of Otto I documents of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe original building plans for Cologne Cathedral. German Basic LawThe Barbarastollen tunnel is protected by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of UNESCO. It is a "refuge intended to shelter, in the event of armed conflict, the movable cultural property" according to article 1 sub-paragraph b. It is furthermore the only cultural property in Germany under special protection according to Chapter II of the convention, and one of only five such sites worldwide, the others being the Vatican City and three refuges in the Netherlands. It is named after Saint Barbara. The entire complex is buried under 400 meters of rock. It is intended to survive a nuclear war. It is estimated that its contents should survive for at least 500 years without any serious damage.

Kirchzarten Airfield (in German Segelfluggelände Kirchzarten-Oberried) is an unpaved airfield located approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) southeast of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, in the town of Kirchzarten. The airfield is home to Freiburg and Kirchzarten based gliding club Breisgauverein für Segelflug (BVS), which has also constructed the airfield and the facilities in the 70s. Until 2009, two other gliding clubs shared the airfield with the BVS, AKA Flieg Freiburg and CFM Emmendingen. They have both moved their operations to Freiburg Airport since.

Kirchzarten is a town in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in the federal-state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. A Zionist agricultural training farm was founded in Kirchzarten in 1919 to prepare young people to become farmers in Mandatory Palestine [Eretz Israel].The Kirchzarten synagogue had a set of Jugendstil windows by artist Friedrich Adler, who made a duplicate set now in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

The Erlenbacher Hut (German: Erlenbacher Hütte) is an inn and cattle hut (Almhütte) on the Erlenbach stream (about 1,100 m above NN) in the Black Forest in Germany.

Steinwasen Park is a theme park with a small zoo in the Black Forest, about 20 km southeast of Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located at the mountain pass Notschrei between Kirchzarten and Todtnau. The area belongs to the town of Oberried. Several animal enclosures and fun rides are spread over an area of 35 hectares. The park is integrated into the natural mountain landscape and takes the Black Forest as a central theme. There is, for example, a film about the historic formation of the mountains, as well as a museum showing model replicas of the characteristic Black Forest houses. Steinwasen Park is open from mid March to early November and is particularly attractive for young families.

The English calamity (German: Engländerunglück) was a hiking disaster which took place on the Schauinsland near Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 17 April 1936. The tragedy unfolded when a group of twenty-seven English schoolboys were stranded after they were led up the mountain by their teacher, Kenneth Keast, who ignored multiple warnings of poor weather conditions. While hiking along the crest of the mountain, the ill-prepared group became disoriented due to fog and an ongoing snowstorm. With the intervention of residents from a nearby village, the majority of the group were returned to safety. Five students died from exhaustion. Following the tragedy, Keast gave a misleading account in which he denied culpability and insisted he was unaware of the imminent weather. He was hailed as a hero, and his true role in the accident remained unknown for decades. The Nazi regime used the incident to put forth a propaganda narrative presenting itself as a benevolent state despite worsening relations with the United Kingdom. Both the German and British governments declined to investigate the incident, in order to avoid jeopardising relations. It was not until the 2010s that the events leading up to the English calamity were more thoroughly re-examined.

Stollenbach is a mountain of the Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The Schauinsland (literally "look-into-the-country"; near Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany) is a mountain in the Black Forest with an elevation of 1,284 m (4,213 ft) above sea level. It is a popular destination for day trips. Due to the high amount of silver mining, it was previously known as "Erzkasten" (literally "ore box"); the name "Schouwesland" first appeared in 1347. The mountain is located roughly ten kilometres (6.2 miles) south-east of Freiburg's city centre.

Eugen-Keidel Tower is a 31-metre-high observation tower location on the Schauinsland mountain near Freiburg, Germany. It was built in 1981. The Eugen-Keidel Tower has an extraordinary design with a triangular cross section.

The Schauinsland Pit (German: Grube Schauinsland, or Erzkasten in the 19th century) was a silver and lead mine east of Freiburg im Breisgau. From the 19th century zinc was also mined. The mine operated from the 13th century until 1954. Since 1997 Schauinsland Pit has been a show mine.

The Dreisam Valley (German: Dreisamtal) is a valley east of the south German city of Freiburg. The valley lies within the Southern Black Forest Nature Park in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
