Washoe Lake State Park

Washoe Lake (Washo: c'óʔyaʔ dáʔaw) is a lake located near Carson City in the Washoe Valley of Washoe County, Nevada. It is a very shallow lake with a surface area that can vary greatly from year to year. Washoe Lake State Park sits on the lake's southeastern shore.Washoe Lake is a eutrophic, shallow lake between Reno and Carson City and just east of the much larger Lake Tahoe. The lake reaches a maximum depth of just 12 feet (3.7 m). The shallowness and the high winds make the lake very turbid. Extensive droughts in the past have caused the lake to dry up entirely, most recently in 1992, 1994, and 2004.Washoe Lake is a warm water fishery and provides a habitat for non-native Sacramento perch, white bass, channel catfish, brown bullhead and carp. The lake has been stocked by the Nevada Division of Wildlife since 2004 when Washoe Lake last dried up. Two boat launches are on the eastern shore of the lake within Washoe Lake State Park.The lake provides habitat for a variety of birds. There are hundreds of migratory and resident species in Washoe Lake State Park. Pelicans, night and great blue herons can be found on the waters of the lake.

The Washoe Valley is a geographical region in the United States covering 66 square miles (170 km2) in southern Washoe County in the state of Nevada. Located between Reno and Carson City, it is named for the Washoe people, Native Americans who lived there before the arrival of Europeans. Slide Mountain and Mount Rose overlook the valley from the west. New Washoe City and Washoe Lake are located in the valley. The census-designated place of Washoe Valley, Nevada, corresponds closely to the area covered by New Washoe City and as of the 2010 Census had a population of 3,019. The valley's ZIP codes are 89701 and 89704, which are often associated with Carson City and other areas nearby.

The Walter Cliff Ranch District, at 7635 Old HW 395 in Washoe Valley, Nevada is a historic site that was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It has significance dating from c.1870, when the house was built. The listing included two contributing buildings: the house and a root cellar/residence building.It was deemed significant as the only surviving agricultural complex in Washoe Valley that had supplied foodstuffs (fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and hay) to the Comstock Mining District. As of 1985, only eight of many 19th century ranches had any surviving remnants from that era. The listed district is 26.2 acres (10.6 ha) in size; the historic parcel was 130 acres (53 ha), purchased by Walter and Elizabeth Cliff in 1874. Four additional structures on the property, including a garage and two sheds, dating from the early 20th century, are deemed non-contributing but are compatible with the historic usage and feel of the property.

Nevada State Historic Preservation Office PDF documents The Lakeview House is a historic house overlooking Washoe Lake in Carson City, Nevada, that was built in 1873. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.This home is on U.S. Route 395 south of E. Lake Blvd. It was deemed significant for association with "early-day recreation, transportation, lumbering, and water-supply enterprises.": 3  It was built on the site of an inn that had burned in 1871. It was the headquarters of John B. Overton, supervisor of the Virginia City & Gold Hill Water Company, which built a water pipe through the area. The area was the end of a nine-mile-long (14 km) lumber flume that brought timber used in Comstock Lode mines and was loaded there onto the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The V&T ran right behind the house, essentially in the backyard. The house is near the underground large pipe that runs down from Marlette Lake through the same pipe up to Virginia City. This water pipe was an engineering marvel for its day, using only the water pressure flow from Marlette Lake. The water pressure alone forced the water back up to Virginia City. This water pipe from Marlette Lake continues to provide Virginia City fresh water. The house was later home of several succeeding supervisors and watermasters. The house is about four miles (6.4 km) northwest of downtown Carson City.

Washoe Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. It corresponds closely to the unincorporated community of New Washoe City. The population was 3,019 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP takes its name from the Washoe Valley, a region between Reno and Carson City centered on Washoe Lake.

Ophir Creek is a 7.7-mile (12.4 km) eastward-flowing stream originating in Tahoe Meadows just south of Tamarack Peak and southeast of Mount Rose Summit, a pass on Nevada State Highway 431. Ophir Creek flows to Washoe Lake in Washoe County in western Nevada, shortly after passing under U.S. Route 395.

The Twaddle-Pedroli Ranch, also known as the Jackson-Harp Ranch, Rand Property and the Wilson Commons Ranch, was purchased by John Twaddle in 1869 for $5,000. The ranch, several miles to the north of Franktown, Nevada and adjacent to the Bowers Mansion, was then known as the Sturtevant Ranch. The property amounted to 630 acres (250 ha).John Twaddle sold the ranch in 1885 to the brothers Stefano and Anselmo Pedroli for $3,000. The Pedrolis were Swiss born Italian speakers who had worked as cattlemen in the Washoe Valley. After buying out Anselmo, Stefano developed a dairy business, shipping fresh milk and cheese to miners working the Comstock Lode. Pedroli's son, William, took over the ranch on Stefano's death in 1924.On July 7, 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt visited the ranch while on a walk with her friend Gertrude Pratt, who was passing a period of residency at the Tumbling DW Ranch in order to obtain a divorce.The Pedroli Ranch passed in 1948 to Harp Brothers, Inc. and was managed by John Jackson. The Willson/Rand family then owned the property from 1956 to 1986. In danger of commercial development, the property was purchased by the Washoe County Parks Department in 1986, under the stipulation that it be known as the Wilson-Commons Ranch., and became a county park. The park comprises only 25 acres (10 ha), with 5 acres (2.0 ha) comprising the historic core of the ranch.The structures do not include the main ranch house, which did not retain significant historic integrity and was demolished in 1998. Remaining structures include a horse barn, chicken house, dairy house, bunk house, tack house, and a privy, constructed by the Works Progress Administration in 1938-39 as part of the Nevada Fly-proof Privy Program. Several corrals also remain.The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.A wildfire devastated a majority of the buildings including the barn in 2016, very little remains.

New Washoe City is an unincorporated community located in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. It is located in the Washoe Valley in southern Washoe County between Reno and Carson City, on the east side of Washoe Lake. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 1990 census, New Washoe City had a population of 2,875. The area was not listed as a census-designated place (CDP) at the 2000 census but was listed as "Washoe Valley, Nevada", for the 2010 census, at which time it had a population of 3,019.New Washoe City was founded as a planned community in 1961. Lots were on sale for $1500 then, $35 down and $35 per month.New Washoe City is named after the older, much smaller nearby locale of Washoe City, commonly referred to as Old Washoe City, which clusters around the northwest side of Little Washoe Lake. New Washoe City is probably best known for its nearby proximity to Washoe Lake, Little Washoe Lake and the adjacent Washoe Lake State Park. New Washoe City is connected to the Reno-Carson City corridor, US 395/I-580 and U.S. Route 395 Alternate by Eastlake Boulevard (former State Route 428). Washoe City, founded in August 1861, was the first county seat of Washoe County. Western Nevada College (WNC) is a public college with its main campus in Carson City, Nevada and additional campuses in Fallon and Minden. There are also WNC centers in Dayton, Fernley, Hawthorne, Lake Tahoe, Lovelock, Smith Valley and Yerington, as well as degree programs in five correctional institutions. The college offers a number of different associate degrees, certificate programs and a bachelor of technology degree. Prior to July 2007, WNC was known as Western Nevada Community College. The name change was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents in recognition of WNC's ability to grant niche four-year degrees. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

The Jack C. Davis Observatory is an astronomical observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City, Nevada. The facility has three telescopes: two 0.4 m (16 in) reflecting telescopes and one 0.25 m (9.8 in) reflector. One telescope is equipped with a spectrograph. Outside the building, a 0.12 m (4.7 in) refractor has been installed under a robotic dome and is used for studying sunspots. All of the telescopes are equipped with cameras, and are connected to the Internet so large groups can access images from remote locations.A Campbell Scientific research-grade weather station is installed outside the observatory. The solar-powered instrument collects weather data and sends it to the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada for analysis and on-line publication. The Planetary Walkway connects the main campus with the observatory. Lining the walkway are massive sandstone monuments created by artistic inmates from the Nevada State Prison at the prison's old quarry. The stones feature carved images of the planets, along with information about the planet and a dedication to the donors. The Western Nevada Astronomical Society is an observing group affiliated with Western Nevada College and the Jack C. Davis Observatory. The WNAS is dedicated to supporting the astronomical community through education, social functions, and service.

Carson Hot Springs is a natural hot spring located in Carson City, Nevada in the Eagle Valley. The spring emits approximately 60 gallons of 120° Fahrenheit geothermally heated groundwater per minute, and is the largest hot spring in the Eagle Valley. The groundwater originates at 6.6 miles (10.6 km) (35,000 feet (11,000 m)) below the earth's surface, and the pools at the site are filled with water pumped from the spring. Today, it is a resort that provides private indoor soaking areas, an outdoor swimming pool, massage and dining.

The Bowers Mansion is a mansion located between Reno and Carson City, Nevada. It was built in 1863 by Lemuel "Sandy" Bowers and his wife, Eilley Orrum Bowers, and is a prime example of the homes built in Nevada by the new millionaires of the Comstock Lode mining boom.
