Middelstum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmɪdəlstʏm]; Gronings: Middelsom [ˈmɪdl̩sɔm]) is a village with a population of 2,419 in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Eemsdelta. Middelstum was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Loppersum.

Doodstil is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is a part of the municipality of Het Hogeland. The hamlet is known for its name which seemingly translates to "dead silent". Doodstil is located along the Boterdiep. In 2005, it won the election for beautiful place name of the Netherlands.

Startenhuizen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈstɑrtə(n)ˌɦœyzə(n)]) is a hamlet at the border of the municipals Het Hogeland and Eemsdelta in the northeastern Netherlands. It is divided in two parts, the biggest in Eemsdelta, and a few farms in Het Hogeland. Startenhuizen is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Startenhuizen. It had place name signs, however some have been removed.The hamlet was first mentioned in 1391 as "to Stertingahusum". The etymology is unclear. In 1590, the church was demolished, and never replaced. Startenhuizen was home to 112 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 17 houses.

Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression Stad en Ommeland ("city and surrounding lands"). The area was Frisian-speaking, but under the influence of the Saxon city of Groningen most of the area turned to speaking Low Saxon. A reminder of the Frisian past is the Ommelanden flag which looks a lot like the Frisian provincial flag but has more and narrower stripes and more red pompeblêden (stylised heart-shaped leaves of yellow water-lily). The area is made up of the following four quarters: Westerkwartier Hunsingo Fivelingo with Oldambt Westerwolde

Usquert is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Het Hogeland. It had a population of around 1,415 in January 2017.

The Kardingermaar is a maar (waterway) in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is, for the most part, the border between the municipalities of Bedum and Ten Boer.
