Ravenshead is a village and civil parish in the Gedling district of Nottinghamshire, England. It borders Papplewick, Newstead Abbey and Blidworth, and is part of Nottinghamshire's Hidden Valleys area. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 5,636, reducing marginally to 5,629 at the 2011 census.

Newstead Abbey, in Nottinghamshire, England, was formerly an Augustinian priory. Converted to a domestic home following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it is now best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron.

Portland College is an education establishment near Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire. It is situated in 20 acres (81,000 m2) of Sherwood Forest approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the town of Mansfield. Portland College has around 270 students aged between 16 and 60. It was established in 1949.

Skegby was a rural district in Nottinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1935. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894 based on that part of the Mansfield rural sanitary district which was in Nottinghamshire (the rest becoming Blackwell Rural District in Derbyshire). It consisted of the parishes of Blidworth, Fulwood, Haywood Oaks, Lindhurst, Skegby, Sookholme and Teversal. In 1935 the district was abolished under a County Review Order. Some urbanised parts went to Warsop and Sutton in Ashfield urban districts, with the rest going mainly to Southwell Rural District and part to Basford Rural District.

Papplewick is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England, 7.5 miles (12 km) north of Nottingham and 6 miles (10 km) south of Mansfield. It had a population of 756 at the 2011 census. In the Middle Ages, the village marked the southern gateway to Sherwood Forest. Papplewick has numerous community and social groups, a village hall, a pub, The Griffin's Head, and an ancient church. Tourist attractions in the parish include the village conservation area, 18th-century cottages and Papplewick Hall. Papplewick Pumping Station is a working museum comprising steam-powered pumping engines, cooling pond and grounds in open agricultural land 1 mile (2 km) east of the village. Surrounding areas of woodland are accessible to the public by a network of footpaths. A local legend dictates that the body of Alan-a-Dale, one of Robin Hood's men, was buried in Papplewick. Papplewick is included in Nottinghamshire's Hidden Valleys district. Papplewick Hall was built between 1781 and 1787 for the Hon. Frederick Montagu. The church of St James, in the grounds of the Hall, was built in 1795.From 1894 to 1974, the parish was part of Basford Rural District. It was then transferred to Gedling Borough. A small part of the parish had been transferred to Hucknall Urban District in 1935.

Lindhurst is a civil parish and hamlet in the Newark and Sherwood district, is 120 miles (190 km) north west of London, 11 miles (18 km) north of Nottingham the county town, and 3 miles (4.8 km) south east of Mansfield, the nearest market town and bordering its district border. It sits within western Nottinghamshire county, England. At the time of the 2011 census the population was less than 100 people and so actual numbers are not given, instead combined with neighbouring Rainworth for a total of 6,315 residents.

Blidworth Bottoms is a hamlet in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located between Blidworth and Ravenshead. Population details are included in the civil parish of Blidworth. The hamlet consists of Bottoms Farm, the Fox and Hounds public house and a small number of houses. In the 19th century a barn was converted into a Primitive Methodist chapel. Well attended in the 1860s, it had fallen into decline by the 1900s.

Hidden Valleys is a name, coined in 2004, used to describe an area of interesting historical and scenic value between the city of Nottingham and the town of Mansfield in the English ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire. Promotional literature and tourist information for the Hidden Valleys were created to encourage tourism in an area that had been blighted by industrial decline. Partners in the project were: Ashfield District Council; Gedling Borough Council; the East Midlands Development Agency; Nottinghamshire County Council; and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. It was intended by the partners that the name would help the Ashfield area compete with the Peak District and Sherwood Forest.

Lindhurst Wind Farm is a power-producing wind farm in Lindhurst parish near Mansfield, England. Built for Npower Renewables, it produces electricity from five wind turbines. It has a total nameplate capacity of 9 MW of electricity, providing enough power to serve the average needs of 5,400 homes.The turbines stand 125 metres (410 ft) high to the rotor tip, making them the tallest in Nottinghamshire.

Sherwood is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Mark Spencer, a Conservative. The constituency takes its name from the Sherwood Forest which is in the area.

Papplewick Pumping Station, situated in open agricultural land approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) by road from the Nottinghamshire village of Papplewick, was built by Nottingham Corporation Water Department between 1881 and 1884 to pump water from the Bunter sandstone to provide drinking water to the City of Nottingham, in England. Two beam engines, supplied with steam by six Lancashire boilers, were housed in Gothic Revival buildings. Apart from changes to the boiler grates, the equipment remained in its original form until the station was decommissioned in 1969, when it was replaced by four submersible electric pumps. A Trust was formed in 1974 to conserve the site as a static museum, but the plans soon developed to include the refurbishment and regular steaming of the engines. One of the beam engines was operated in 1975, using the only boiler that was certified to be safe at the time. Since then, the second engine has been reconditioned, and both are steamed several times a year. New visitor facilities were built in 1991, and a major restoration of the structures was completed in 2005, following a grant of £1.6 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund. As well as the beam engines, the site houses several other engines, which are also demonstrated on steaming days.
