Frisby and Kirby

Asfordby is a village and civil parish in the Melton district of Leicestershire, to the west of Melton Mowbray on the A6006 road. The village is north-east of Leicester. The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Asfrothr'.The parish consists of Asfordby proper, Asfordby Valley and Asfordby Hill, which together have a population of around 3,000 (1995 est). The population had increased to 3,286 at the 2011 census. The villages are to the north of the River Wreake, with Asfordby Hill situated east of Asfordby proper, closer to Melton, and Asfordby Valley to the north. Asfordby proper is just over a mile away from the neighbouring village of Frisby on the Wreake. Within Asfordby proper, there are few shops, including a convenience stores, a fish & chip shop, an Indian restaurant, a kitchen store and a Co-operative shop. Asfordby Hall was demolished in 1965.Asfordby was the site of a modern deep coal pit, Asfordby Colliery, built between 1984 and 1993, but closed in 1997 due to numerous geological difficulties and the low price of coal at the time.

Frisby on the Wreake is a village and civil parish on the River Wreake about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 557.The toponym "Frisby" was applied by Danish invaders in the 9th or 10th century. It refers to the farm or settlement of the Frisians. The "on the Wreake" suffix was added later to distinguish the village from another Frisby, near Billesdon, about 8 miles (13 km) to the southeast. "Wreake" refers to the River Wreake. The name of the river originates from a Danish word referring to the meandering nature of the river.

Asfordby Football Club is a football club based in Asfordby, England. They are currently members of the United Counties League Division One and play at Asfordby Acres, Asfordby.

Frisby railway station was a former station serving the village of Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire. The station was situated at a level crossing on the road to Hoby.

Frisby Marsh is a 10.2-hectare (25-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire.This site has spring-fed marshes, grassland, woodland and a pool and channel which are relicts of a former ox-bow lake of the adjacent River Wreake. The marshes have a rich flora, with plants such as marsh valerian and marsh arrowgrass.A public footpath goes through the southern end of the site.

Saxelbye (or Saxelby) is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Grimston, in the district of Melton in Leicestershire, England. The village lies about three miles to the north-west of Melton Mowbray and is situated on the southern slope of the ridge that makes up the southern boundary of the Vale of Belvoir. In 1931 the parish had a population of 75. On 1 April 1936 the parish of Saxelby was abolished and merged with Grimston. The very fine Grade II* church with its crocketed spire is dedicated to St Peter. Webster’s Dairy in Saxelbye, founded in 1883, is one of only six dairies where Stilton cheese is produced. The Old Dalby Test Track passes close to the village.

Grimston was a railway station serving Saxelbye village in the English county of Leicestershire. It was opened on the Nottingham direct line of the Midland Railway between London and Nottingham via Corby.The station was formerly named Saxelbye, the name was changed after only 3 months to avoid confusion with Saxby, a few miles east of Melton Mowbray, on the Midland's other line between Leicester and Peterborough. The village of Grimston lies about one mile to the north west of the former Grimston station. The line still exists today as the Old Dalby Test Track.

The Melton Mowbray Navigation was formed when the River Wreake in Leicestershire, England, was made navigable upstream from its junction with the River Soar and the Leicester Navigation near Syston to Melton Mowbray, opening in 1797. Largely river navigation, there were numerous lock cuts, to accommodate the 12 broad locks built along its length, many of which were built at sites where it was necessary to maintain the water levels for an adjacent mill. With railway competition, and the closure of the Oakham Canal, to which it was connected, decline was rapid, and the canal closed in 1877. Two hundred years after it was opened, the Melton & Oakham Waterways Society was formed, with the aim of returning the navigation to a navigable waterway once more.

Shoby is a hamlet and former civil parish 12 miles (19 km) north east of Leicester, now in the parish of Grimston, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. In 2000 it had an estimated population of 39. In 1931 the parish had a population of 49. Gregory Brokesby who was a resident of Shoby became the Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1632.

Rotherby is a village and former civil parish, 9 miles (14 km) north east of Leicester, now in the parish of Hoby with Rotherby, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 133.

Gaddesby Hall is an 18th-century brick-built house in the village of Gaddesby, Leicestershire. It was built in the late 1740s as a three-storey house with additions of 1868. It is a Grade II listed building. It was built on the site of an earlier house called Paske Hall which was surrounded by a moat and dated back to 1398. In 1534 it was home of Everard Palmer and the estate extended to 72 acres. Everard died in 1558 and the estate passed to his grandson Everard Howet who died in 1576. ~In 1598 it was bought by William Nedham of Peterborough who acquired adjacent land extending the estate to 230 acres. He died in 1600 leaving the estate to 7 year old Francis Nedham. Francis died in 1656 leaving the hall to his son, also Francis, who died in 1692. Next George Nedham died childless in 1738. His widow Elisabeth Penrice died in 1741.This old hall was pulled down in 1744, having been bought by John Ayre, High Sheriff for Leicester. He built a new hall and died in 1758. In 1807 it was owned by Anne Ayre, widow of John Ayre living there with her daughters Mary and Eliza. In 1811 Eliza married hero of Waterloo, Captain Edward Cheney but died in childbirth in 1818. Cheney died in 1848 and left the estate to his only surviving son, Edward Henshaw Cheney who died in 1889.Although Edward Cheney was buried with his wife in Gaddesby Parish Church an impressive monument by Joseph Gott originally stood in the conservatory of the hall. This was moved to the grave in 1917.The estate was put up for sale in 1917, at which time the celebrated statue of Colonel Cheney was moved into St Luke's. In the early twentieth century it was the country house of Maurice de Forest.After suffering neglect and from its use by the American Armed Forces during the Second World War, in 1950 the wings and top storey were demolished and the house was remodelled by C. E. Ogden.
