Frisby on the Wreake

Frisby railway station was a former station serving the village of Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire. The station was situated at a level crossing on the road to Hoby.

Asfordby Football Club is a football club based in Asfordby, England. They are currently members of the United Counties League Division One and play at Asfordby Acres, Asfordby.

Frisby Marsh is a 10.2-hectare (25-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire.This site has spring-fed marshes, grassland, woodland and a pool and channel which are relicts of a former ox-bow lake of the adjacent River Wreake. The marshes have a rich flora, with plants such as marsh valerian and marsh arrowgrass.A public footpath goes through the southern end of the site.

Asfordby is a village and civil parish in the Melton district of Leicestershire, to the west of Melton Mowbray on the A6006 road. The village is north-east of Leicester. The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Asfrothr'.The parish consists of Asfordby proper, Asfordby Valley and Asfordby Hill, which together have a population of around 3,000 (1995 est). The population had increased to 3,286 at the 2011 census. The villages are to the north of the River Wreake, with Asfordby Hill situated east of Asfordby proper, closer to Melton, and Asfordby Valley to the north. Asfordby proper is just over a mile away from the neighbouring village of Frisby on the Wreake. Within Asfordby proper, there are few shops, including a convenience stores, a fish & chip shop, an Indian restaurant, a kitchen store and a Co-operative shop. Asfordby Hall was demolished in 1965.Asfordby was the site of a modern deep coal pit, Asfordby Colliery, built between 1984 and 1993, but closed in 1997 due to numerous geological difficulties and the low price of coal at the time.

Frisby and Kirby, formerly just Frisby is a former civil parish in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. Its principal settlements were the villages of Frisby on the Wreake and Kirby Bellars, now both civil parishes in their own right. In 2001 it had a population of 890.

The Melton Mowbray Navigation was formed when the River Wreake in Leicestershire, England, was made navigable upstream from its junction with the River Soar and the Leicester Navigation near Syston to Melton Mowbray, opening in 1797. Largely river navigation, there were numerous lock cuts, to accommodate the 12 broad locks built along its length, many of which were built at sites where it was necessary to maintain the water levels for an adjacent mill. With railway competition, and the closure of the Oakham Canal, to which it was connected, decline was rapid, and the canal closed in 1877. Two hundred years after it was opened, the Melton & Oakham Waterways Society was formed, with the aim of returning the navigation to a navigable waterway once more.

Grimston was a railway station serving Saxelbye village in the English county of Leicestershire. It was opened on the Nottingham direct line of the Midland Railway between London and Nottingham via Corby.The station was formerly named Saxelbye, the name was changed after only 3 months to avoid confusion with Saxby, a few miles east of Melton Mowbray, on the Midland's other line between Leicester and Peterborough. The village of Grimston lies about one mile to the north west of the former Grimston station. The line still exists today as the Old Dalby Test Track.

Rotherby is a village and former civil parish, 9 miles (14 km) north east of Leicester, now in the parish of Hoby with Rotherby, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 133.

Saxelbye (or Saxelby) is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Grimston, in the district of Melton in Leicestershire, England. The village lies about three miles to the north-west of Melton Mowbray and is situated on the southern slope of the ridge that makes up the southern boundary of the Vale of Belvoir. In 1931 the parish had a population of 75. On 1 April 1936 the parish of Saxelby was abolished and merged with Grimston. The very fine Grade II* church with its crocketed spire is dedicated to St Peter. Webster’s Dairy in Saxelbye, founded in 1883, is one of only six dairies where Stilton cheese is produced. The Old Dalby Test Track passes close to the village.

Kirby Bellars is a village and civil parish near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 369.

Brooksby is a deserted village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Hoby with Rotherby, in the Melton district, in Leicestershire, England. It was the ancestral home of the Villiers family. Brooksby and surrounding villages were served by Brooksby railway station. In 1931 the parish had a population of 69.The name 'Brooksby' means 'farm/settlement of Brok' or 'farm/settlement with a brook'.On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished to form Hoby with Rotherby.Brooksby Hall, a 16th-century manor house, and the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Brooksby, are all that remains of a village that was cleared to enable sheep to be grazed. The church was once the living for Henry Gregg who was married to the writer Mary Kirby. Today the hall has conference and banqueting facilities. Brooksby Melton College offers apprenticeships and further education training courses in animal care, countryside, equine, fisheries, and land based service engineering.

Brooksby Hall is a late–16th-century manor house on 3.2 square kilometres (800 acres) of land between Leicester and Melton Mowbray. Situated 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) northeast of Leicester, the hall and the neighbouring church of St Michael and All Angels are the last remnants of the medieval village of Brooksby, which was founded during the period of the Danelaw in the 9th century AD. In the 15th and 16th centuries Brooksby was depopulated by enclosures carried out by the estate's owners, which turned its cultivated land into sheep pastures in order to profit from a boom in wool. A 31-acre garden adjoins the hall, leading down to the River Wreake and the railway line from Leicester to Peterborough. The hall, which is Grade II* listed, was occupied for centuries by the Villiers family and later by Admiral David Beatty, the British commander at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. It is now part of the Brooksby Melton College and is also used as a wedding and conference venue.
