The Kil Hurwenen, or De Kil as locals call it, is a nature reserve in the floodplain of the Waal at Hurwenen in the Netherlands in the municipality of Maasdriel.The area was created in 1639 when a former meander of the Waal was cut off from the river by human intervention. The walk in the countryside is still clearly recognizable. During high tide the area is still flooded by water from the river. In the immediate vicinity there are a number of sand ditches, a remnant of the clay extraction for the brick industry in the area. Before the municipal reorganization of 1999 the preserve still partly belonged to the municipality of Zaltbommel. However, by a boundary adjustment the nature preserve belongs entirely to the municipality of Maasdriel.Many bird species encountered during the trek to and from their wintering areas using the area to forage.The Kil Hurwenen is the property of The Dutch National Forest Service and is not accessible to the public. However, the surrounding fields from May 1 to October 1 are freely accessible from sunrise to sunset.

Hurwenen

Hurwenen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Maasdriel, and lies about 11 km southwest of Tiel. Thijs Straver is the mayor of Hurwenen. Hurwenen was a separate municipality until 1955, when it was merged with Rossum, except for a short period between 1818 and 1821, when it was also a part of Rossum.

Siege of Zaltbommel

The siege of Zaltbommel was a campaign that took place during the Eighty Years' War and the Anglo–Spanish War from 15 May to 22 July 1599. The Spanish led by Francisco López de Mendoza y Mendoza launched an offensive campaign around Bommelerwaard, which was defended by an Anglo-Dutch force under the command of Maurice of Orange. A siege on the town of Zaltbommel by Spanish troops was attempted but they had to lift the siege and were defeated in subsequent attempts to regain the initiative. Mendoza retreated and the Spanish army then found itself in chaos: mutinies took effect and as a result further operations were suspended for a number of years. As a result, the Dutch and English followed with a counter-offensive in the Spanish Netherlands.

Velddriel

Velddriel is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The village is a part of the municipality of Maasdriel, and lies about 8 km north of 's-Hertogenbosch. It was first mentioned in 996 as Thrile. The veld (field) was later added to distinguish from Kerkdriel (church). In 1840, it was home to 422 people. The St. Martinus Church was built in 1858 and destroyed in 1944. In 1953, a new church was completed.

Est, Netherlands

Est is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 8 km west of Tiel. It was first mentioned in 1316 as Est. The etymology is unclear. The church dates from 1750 and has been restored in 1999. The village pump dates from around 1770, and is still in working order. In 1840, Est was home to 588 people.
