Norderneyer Seegatt

Buise was one of the East Frisian Islands off the North Sea coast of Germany that was almost entirely engulfed by the sea in the second half of the 17th century. The only remaining part is the eastern end, known today as the island of Norderney. Buise itself was formed by the breakup of a bigger island. Two possible origins are mentioned: the breakup of the island Burchana in the flood of 1219, and the breakup of the island Bant in 1170, which also formed Juist, Borkum and Memmert. Buise broke up in two parts in 1362. The eastern part was called Osterende initially, and later "Norder neye Oog" (Nordens New Island), and today is the island Norderney. The western part disappeared slowly over the ages as a result of erosion, but sources do not agree on the exact date of the disappearance of Buise (the St. Peter's Flood of 1651 or 1690).

Norderney (Low German: Nördernee) is one of the seven populated East Frisian Islands off the North Sea coast of Germany. The island is 14 by 2.5 kilometres (8.7 by 1.6 mi), having a total area of about 26.3 square kilometres (10.2 sq mi) and is therefore Germany's ninth-largest island. Norderney's population amounts to about 5,850 people. In 1946 Norderney gained municipal status and belongs to the Aurich "Kreis" (county). On the northern side of the island lies a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) long sandy beach. The neighbouring island to the east is Baltrum, which lies about 800m (half a mile) away beyond the Wichter Ee. To the west is the island of Juist, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away on the other side of the Norderneyer Seegatt. The entire eastern half of Norderney belongs to the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park. Access to the park is restricted, as it is subdivided in zones of different accessibility for the protection of the wildlife. The status as a National Park also affects all types of traffic on the island, while especially car traffic is subject to strict regulations. The mainland is easily reached via ferry operated by AG Reederei Norden-Frisia from the harbour, Norddeich pier near the northern German city of Norden. Norderney also possesses an airport with a 1,000-metre (3,300 ft) runway.

Juist Airfield (German: Flugplatz Juist, IATA: JUI, ICAO: EDWJ) is an airfield on the island of Juist in Lower Saxony, Germany. The airport serves regular flights to Norden-Norddeich Airfield on the mainland. As of 2013, the airfield had up to 500 takeoffs and landings on weekends, the second most aircraft movements in the state of Lower Saxony, after Hannover Airport. The airfield is a critical piece of infrastructure for the island, due to ferry traffic being dependent on the tides.

Norddeich Mole is a railway station located in Norddeich, Lower Saxony, Germany. The station is located on the Emsland Railway. The train services are operated by Deutsche Bahn. Norddeich Mole is a port for combined passenger and car ferries to the islands of Norderney and Juist, both very popular among holidaymakers, many of whom arrive by train (especially during the summer).

Norden-Norddeich Airfield (German: Flugplatz Norden-Norddeich, IATA: NOE, ICAO: EDWS) is an airfield near the northwestern Norden borough of Norddeich in Lower Saxony, Germany. The airport serves regular flights to airports on the islands of Norderney and Juist. It is also home to a flying club, which operates two aircraft from a hangar on the airfield's east side.

Norderney Airport (German: Flughafen Norderney, IATA: NRD, ICAO: EDWY) is an airport on the island of Norderney in Lower Saxony, Germany. Having been opened in 1970, the airport is an integral part of the island's infrastructure, serving as a faster way to get onto or off the island compared to shipping and is available even when maritime traffic is suspended in the winter due to ice.

The Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park (German: Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer) was established in 1986 and embraces the East Frisian Islands, mudflats and salt marshes between the Bay of Dollart on the border with the Netherlands in the west and Cuxhaven as far as the Outer Elbe shipping channel in the east. The national park has an area of about 345,800 hectares (1,335 sq mi). The National Park organisation is located in Wilhelmshaven. In June 2009, the National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and the Dutch Wadden Sea, highlighting its unique intertidal ecosystem and high biodiversity.

Berumbur is a municipality in the district of Aurich, in Lower Saxony, Germany. In 2004, the municipality had approximately 2,400 inhabitants and covers an area of 6.42 square kilometers. The municipality includes the districts Berumbur, Berum, Kleinheide, Holzdorf and Blandorf. There are many fishing lakes, two in Berumbur directly. The most famous lake is a great Kiessee, used for bathing (at one's own risk).

Neßmersiel belongs to the municipality Dornum in the rural district Aurich in Lower Saxony, Germany. Neßmersiel is located about 5 kilometres northwest of Dornum. From 1867 to 1977, Neßmersiel belonged to Norden (Altkreis Norden). The original port was built about 1570. Grain was shipped to Bremen, Hamburg, the Netherlands and Norway. By 1700, the harbour had to be moved closer to the sea when the original location filled with silt from the dikes. By 1930, the new location was also closed. The ferry to Baltrum was built in 1969/1970. Most coastal tours of the north German sea coast begin here at Neßmersiel. Each year 10 - 12 million migratory birds visit nearby Wattenmeer National Park of Lower Saxony (Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer). The resort village of Neßmersiel lies directly behind the dike and contains mostly holiday homes. There are also restaurants, hotels, cafes, and numerous shops. A playground for children is at the beach. The "Sturmfrei" is new since March 2007. The complex includes a 3D-cinema, wellness center, restaurant, Show- and Sportcourt and a big kidsarea. The "Sturmfrei" is the biggest Funcenter at the German Northseacoast Near Nessmersiel a Bavarian sex comedy was filmed in 1973 ("The East Frisian Report"). You can still find some locations from the movie.

Appingen Abbey (German: Kloster Appingen) is a former Carmelite monastery in the parish of Greetsiel, which is dedicated to Saint Mary. It was named after the village of the same name.

Eilsum is a village in the region of East Frisia, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is part of the municipality of Krummhörn. The village is located to the north of Jennelt and to the west of Grimersum. Eilsum was first mentioned in documents around 1300 under the names Edelsum, Ethilsum and Edelsheim. These names could also be found in the parish register of Münster at the end of the 15th century.Eilsum was built on a warft. On this warft now stands a rather large church, the Church of Eilsum, which dates from the 13th century.
