Norddeich (Norden)

Norddeich Mole is a port for combined passenger and car ferries to the islands of Norderney and Juist, both very popular among holidaymakers, many of whom arrive by train (especially during the summer).

Westermarsch II was an independent municipality until the 1972 territorial reform in Lower Saxony and, as such, a member of the collective municipality (Samtgemeinde) of Leybucht in Lower Saxony. Today Westermarsch II is a village in the East Frisian borough of Norden with around 500 inhabitants (as at 12/2016). The village parish covers an area of 11.69 km². Curiously the main settlement of Westermarsch II is associated in public perception with the village of Norddeich, with which it has grown together. The boundary between the two runs down the middle of the road, Dörper Weg.

Westermarsch I was an independent municipality in Lower Saxony until the municipal reform of 1972 and, as such, a member of the collective municipality (Samtgemeinde) of Leybucht. Today Westermarsch I is a part of the East Frisian borough of Norden with about 450 inhabitants (as at 12/2016), spread over an area of 19.42 km².

Norden-Norddeich Airfield (German: Flugplatz Norden-Norddeich, IATA: NOE, ICAO: EDWS) is an airfield near the northwestern Norden borough of Norddeich in Lower Saxony, Germany. The airport serves regular flights to airports on the islands of Norderney and Juist. It is also home to a flying club, which operates two aircraft from a hangar on the airfield's east side.

The organ of St. Ludgeri in Norden was built from 1686 to 1692 by Arp Schnitger. It has 46 stops, five divisions, three manuals and pedal, and is thus the second-largest surviving Schnitger organ in Germany (after that of the St. James' Church, Hamburg) and until 2018 the largest organ in East Frisia. Historically and musically it is considered an art-work of international rank.

Norden (East Frisian Low Saxon: Nörden) is a town in the district of Aurich, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated near the North Sea shore, in East Frisia.

The Reception Tower Utlandshörn was a 65-metre (211 ft) high wood framework tower built of oak wood on the area of the radio reception station Utlandshoern, a part of Norddeich Radio coastal station (callsign DAN). This tower carried wire antennas of four arms on its top, which were manufactured of teak wood, for the reception of short wave signals. It was built in 1935. In the middle of 1976 it was replaced by an antenna system, which was fastened on steel towers and which also does not exist any more. At the beginning of 1977 the tower, which was already one of the last large wood towers in Germany, was knocked down with great care. From the wood of the demolished tower some carvings and ornaments were made.

Ekel is the eastern part of the town centre of Norden. Its name goes back to a Low German description for "acorn" (Eichel) or "oak grove" (Eichengehölz), which gave its name to a medieval fortified house (Wehrhaus) about 800 metres northeast of the big market place. Later a private estate and then part of the agriculturally dominated Norden environs, in the 20th century Ekel quickly merged with Norden as a result of new housing estates and was finally incorporated in 1919.

Süderneuland I is a district (Stadtteil) of the East Frisian city of Norden, in Lower Saxony. It is located directly to the south of the city, and is the city's most populous and second largest district, after the city center. The area of the current district was incorporated into Norden during the Lower Saxony municipal reform in 1972; until then it was an independent municipality. With the Leegemoor industrial and commercial area, Süderneuland I has by far the largest and most important commercial area in Norden. The Norden train station is also located in the district. Süderneuland II is located to the southeast of Süderneuland I.

Neuwesteel is part of the borough of Norden in East Frisia in the northwest of the German state of Lower Saxony. It is the third most recent quarter after Tidofeld and Leybuchtpolder, because it was only founded on 11 July 1934. On the terrain of the present parish lay the village of Westeel which was submerged in 1373 when the Leybucht bay flooded the area. Parts of the Leybucht were then dyked over the course of the centuries. In earlier centuries this was done manually and using spades, which is why the spade forms part of the Neuwesteel coat of arms. In the years 1928 and 1929 the roughly 600-hectare Leypolder was dyked. On this polder has stood the village of Neuwesteel since 1934. Initially it was part of the municipality of Süderpolder. On 1 October the whole municipality of Süderpolder was renamed Neuwesteel. The municipality of Neuwesteel became part of the collective municipality of Leybucht in 1965. As part of the territorial reforms in Lower Saxony in 1972 Neuwesteel was incorporated into the borough of Norden. As an incorporated subdistrict Neuwesteel still has a parish chairman (Ortsvorsteher), who represents the concerns of the roughly 340 inhabitants to the borough of Norden. Because the dyked polder soil is very fertile, the region was used from the very beginning for agricultural purposes. Cattle farming and crops predominate, especially the cultivation of potatoes. In Neuwesteel is the Leybucht Pumping Station, part of the Drainage Association of Norden, which ensures that the lower lying areas are drained via the Norder Tief. In addition to the pumping station is a campsite. Because there are no bridges for several kilometres along the Norder Tief, the river may be crossed in Neuwesteel on a Pünte, a type of raft. However, it is only for pedestrians and cyclists.
