Red Moor (Rhön)

Mathesberg is a mountain of Hesse, located in the Rhön Mountains, Germany.

The Heidelstein, between Bischofsheim an der Rhön in the Bavarian county of Rhön-Grabfeld and Wüstensachsen in the Hessian county of Fulda, is a mountain, 925.7 m above sea level (NHN) high, on the state border in the mountains of the High Rhön, part of the German Central Upland range of Rhön. Its actual summit is in Bavaria. Sometimes its main peak is also called Schwabenhimmel. On the Heidelstein are the Heidelstein Transmitter and a memorial of the Rhön Club. On the northwestern slopes is the source of the River Ulster and on the western mountainside is the Rotes Moor Cross Country Skiing Centre.

The Heidelstein transmitter is a facility for FM- and TV broadcasting on the Heidelstein mountain in the Rhön, Germany. It uses as an antenna, a 218-metre tall guyed mast of tubular steel, which weighs 245 tons, and it was built in 1969. The Heidelstein transmitter is the property of Deutsche Telekom.

The Long Rhön (German: Lange Rhön) is a ridge in the Central Rhön which forms part of the High Rhön within the Rhön Mountains. The Long Rhön is an elongated basalt plateau in the centre, roughly 800 metres above sea level, which is only occasional interrupted by mountain peaks. Its highest mountain is the Heidelstein (926 m above sea level (NHN)). A majority of the area is part of the Long Rhön Nature Reserve. In this area of the Rhön is the Black Moor.

The Feldberg is a mountain in the Rhön highlands in the German state of Hesse. It is 815.2 m above sea level (NN). It is located about three kilometres northeast of Gersfeld in the county of Fulda, near the border with Bavaria and is part of the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The nearest settlements are Obernhausen to the northwest and Sandberg on the southern spurs of the mountain. The Feldberg is a southwestern outpost of the mountain ridge that runs from the Wasserkuppe to the Heidelstein. The youthful Fulda flows past below its western slopes. The section of the B 284 federal road from Gersfeld to Wüstensachsen runs past the Feldberg in a curve to the west and north. A walking trail managed by the Rhön Club, the Extratour Guckaisee, runs over the Feldberg, passing immediately south of the summit. The terrain is used for forestry and, in places, also for pasture.

The German Glider Museum (German: Deutsches Segelflugmuseum mit Modellflug), situated on the Wasserkuppe in the German state of Hesse is the national gliding museum, opened in 1987.

The Himmeldunkberg or Himmeldunk is an extinct volcano, 888 m above sea level (NN) m high, in the High Rhön (Hohe Rhön) in Germany. It straddles the Bavarian-Hessian state border.

The Bavarian Rhön Nature Park (Naturpark Bayerische Rhön) straddles the junction of the German states of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. 70 km2 of the total 125 km2 area of the nature park has been recognised by UNESCO as part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The organisation for the promotion of the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park (Zweckverband Naturpark Bayerische Rhön) was founded in 1967. On 26 November 1982 the regulation for the Naturpark Bayerische Rhön was issued and, in 1997, the Zweckverband became the Society for the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve (Naturpark und Biosphärenreservat Bayer. Rhön e.V.).

The Wasserkuppe () is a mountain within the German state of Hesse. It is a large plateau formation at an elevation of 950 metres (3,120 ft) and is the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains. Great advances in sailplane development took place on the mountain during the interwar period, driven by annual contests. Near the summit there is still an airfield used by gliding clubs and pilots of light aircraft.

The Central Rhön (German: Zentrale Rhön) is a 5th level natural region which, together with the Southern High Rhön, forms the High Rhön. The region has several mountains over 900 metres high, including: the Wasserkuppe (950.0 m) and Heidelstein (926 m). Other summits over 900 metres are regarded as subpeaks due to their low isolation and prominence.
