The Lotos Club was founded in 1870 as a gentlemen's club in New York City; it has since also admitted women as members. Its founders were primarily a young group of writers and critics. Mark Twain, an early member, called it the "Ace of Clubs". The Club took its name from the poem "The Lotos-Eaters" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, which was then very popular. Lotos was thought to convey an idea of rest and harmony. Two lines from the poem were selected for the Club motto: In the afternoon they came unto a land In which it seemed always afternoon The Lotos Club has always had a literary and artistic bent, with the result that it has accumulated a noted collection of American paintings. Its "State Dinners" (1893 menu at right below) are legendary fetes for scholars, artists and sculptors, collectors and connoisseurs, writers and journalists, and politicians and diplomats. Elaborate souvenir menus are produced for these dinners.

Congregation Emanu-El of New York is the first Reform Jewish congregation in New York City and, because of its size and prominence, has served as a flagship congregation in the Reform branch of Judaism since its founding in 1845. The congregation uses Temple Emanu-El of New York, one of the largest synagogues in the world. The congregation currently comprises approximately 2,000 families and has been led by Senior Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson since July 2013. The congregation is located at 1 East 65th Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Temple houses the Bernard Museum of Judaica, the congregation's Judaica collection of over 1,000 objects.

The Bernard Museum of Judaica, formally the Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum of Judaica is part of Temple Emanu-El on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Their museum hosts temporary exhibits on various aspects of Jewish life, faith, and culture.The museum consists of three galleries which are housed in three relatively small rooms on the second floor. The first two galleries are often used for temporary exhibitions. The third gallery is the permanent collection which contains items of Judaica and Temple memorabilia. Some of the museum's more than 1,000 objects date back to the 14th century. Not limited to items from Emanu-El's history, the collection also includes items from the histories of Temple Emanu-El, Temple Beth-El (merged with Temple Emanu-El in 1927), Ansche Chesed and Adas Jeshurun who merged to form Beth-El in 1974.Among the list of artifacts in the third room are a vast number of silver items, a large collection of menorahs, and pieces spanning a broad historical and global geographic range. Among the items is a 1891 silver, copper, and gilt torah case from Calcutta. A bronze statue of Balto by Frederick Roth is installed in Central Park, Manhattan, New York. Balto (1919 – March 14, 1933) was a Siberian Husky and sled dog belonging to musher and breeder Leonhard Seppala. He achieved fame when he reportedly led a team of sled dogs on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, in which diphtheria antitoxin was transported from Anchorage, Alaska, to Nenana, Alaska, by train and then to Nome by dog sled to combat an outbreak of the disease.
