Jeruel Academy was a school for African Americans established in Athens, Georgia in 1881. Classes were originally held at Landrum Chapel, part of Ebenezer Baptist Church, West. The school was organized by the Rev. Collins Henry Lyons. A school building was constructed in 1886. Courses included English, Greek, Latin, French, history, mathematics, public speaking, agriculture, sewing, cooking, music, and printing. The school was merged with three others in 1924 to become part of Union Baptist Institute. After Baptist institute was dissolved during the desegregation era the building was demolished in 1956. The site, once located in the Linnentown neighborhood, is now part of the University of Georgia campus and commemorated by a historical marker. An image of the building by Jackson Davis shows a three-story structure with some window openings in the roofline. Hampton Collins Moon went to school at Jeruel Academy and worked as a steward for several terms while he was there to earn some money. Numerous alumni of Atlanta Baptist College taught at the school.

Linnentown was a Black neighborhood in Athens, Georgia that was destroyed in the 1960s by an urban renewal project of the University of Georgia (UGA) and the city government of Athens. Comprising an area of 22 acres, the neighborhood had about fifty families who were forced out, via eminent domain, to make room for student housing for UGA; the dormitories, Russell Hall, Creswell Hall, and Brumby Hall now stand on the site. UGA associate professor of Geography, Jerry Shannon, estimates that the combination of undervaluing the property at the time of sale and forcing residents into areas "of the city where property values have not climbed as quickly" has cost residents over $5 million of generational wealth.

Athens is a consolidated city-county and college town in the U.S. state of Georgia. Athens lies about 70 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, and is a satellite city of the capital. The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university and an R1 research institution, is in Athens and contributed to its initial growth. In 1991, after a vote the preceding year, the original City of Athens abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County, referred to jointly as Athens–Clarke County where it is the county seat.As of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau's population of the consolidated city-county (all of Clarke County except Winterville and a portion of Bogart) was 127,315. Athens is the sixth-most populous city in Georgia, and the principal city of the Athens metropolitan area, which had a 2020 population of 215,415, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Metropolitan Athens is a component of the larger Atlanta–Athens–Clarke County–Sandy Springs Combined Statistical Area.The city is dominated by a pervasive college town culture and music scene centered in downtown Athens, next to the University of Georgia's North Campus. Major music acts associated with Athens include numerous alternative rock bands such as R.E.M., the B-52's, Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Harvey Milk. The city is also known as a recording site for such groups as the Atlanta-based Indigo Girls. The 2020 book Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture describes Athens as the model of the indie culture of the 1980s.

Russell Hall is a co-ed dormitory for first-year students at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. It is named after former governor of Georgia and United States Senator Richard B. Russell Jr., who was a segregationist. This residence hall is located on the corner of Baxter Street and South Finley, on the location of the former Linnentown neighborhood, along with four other freshman, high rise dormitories. The residence hall is co-ed and houses 965 students. Most rooms house two people and is equipped with beds, dressers, desks, and a closet. The dormitory has community restrooms on each hall along with a study lounge and warming kitchen on alternating floors. The Russell Academic Center, located on the first floor, provides a quiet place for students to study as well as meeting rooms. This space is open for all students from 8 AM to 8 PM. There is a laundry facility on the third floor as well as an additional space for students to study and gather, with study rooms, a TV lounge, and a full kitchen with an ice machine. Students can participate in Russell Student Government or they can get involved with other activities through Russell. During the 2017–2018 school year, Russell Hall was closed for renovation and reopened for the 2018–2019 school year.

The Baxter Street School was a public school founded in 1886 in Athens, Georgia, United States. It was initially the first African American public school in the city of Athens; and seven years after opening it was remodeled and became a segregated white school.

The Wilkins House, at 387 S. Milledge Ave. in Athens, Georgia, was built in 1860. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.It is Classical Revival in style. The property was owned by the University of Georgia before 1860, when it was bought by Alfred Dearing. Dearing began construction of the house, which was not completed until after the American Civil War, and sold it in 1878. After passing through several owners, in 1905 John Julian Wilkins and his wife purchased the house for $10,000. Wilkins was president of the Georgia National Bank and of the American State Bank, and was "the leading banker in Athens and one of the South's most important financial figures." The house has a "large cast iron dog guarding the grounds".

The Tree That Owns Itself is a white oak tree that, according to legend, has legal ownership of itself and of all land within eight feet (2.4 m) of its base. Also known as the Jackson Oak, the tree is at the corner of South Finley and Dearing Streets in Athens, Georgia, US. The original tree, thought to have started life between the mid-16th and late 18th century, fell in 1942, but a new tree was grown from one of its acorns and planted in the same location. The current tree is sometimes referred to as the Son of the Tree That Owns Itself. Both trees have appeared in numerous national publications, and the site is a local landmark.

Sanford Field was an on-campus playing venue for football and baseball at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia. It was built with wooden stands in 1911 and was named after Steadman V. Sanford. As a venue for football, it was replaced in 1929 by Sanford Stadium, which was built nearby.

Clarke County is located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 128,671. Its county seat is Athens, with which it is a consolidated city-county. Clarke County is included in the Athens-Clarke County, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area.

The C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business is a constituent college of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, United States. The business college offers undergraduate programs, MBA programs, specialized master's programs and doctoral programs. It was founded as the first business school in the American South in 1912. The Terry College has eight programs that have top ten rankings and the Bachelor of Business Administration degree is recognized as a top 21 undergraduate program with a large residential enrollment, and the MBA Program is considered a top 31 graduate business program and has a selectivity rate of approximately 35%.The Terry MBA is offered as a full-time degree on campus in Athens, as a part-time degree or Executive MBA in the Buckhead district of Atlanta, and a fully online MBA option was added in 2023.All of the college's programs are accredited by AACSB International – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Spec Towns Track is the track and field facility and stadium for the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia. The track was originally built in 1964 and the stadium grandstand was added in 1987 to accommodate 1,000 spectators. In 2011, the Bulldogs hosted their first Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships since 1999 at the Spec Towns Track. Following the 2017 track season, the track was upgraded to a 400-meter, 8-lane Mondo Sportflex Super X720 surface (the same surface used at every Summer Olympics since 1992), replacing the old polyurethane track. The track was named after Spec Towns in 1990 during the SEC outdoor Track and Field championships. The University of Georgia holds the Spec Towns Invitational in early April each year, a track meet recognizing his achievements and contributions to the school.

Knox Institute and Industrial School was a private elementary and secondary school for African American students in Athens, Georgia, United States. It was open from 1868 until 1928. Alumni include Monroe Morton, a builder and real estate businessman whose legacy includes the Morton Building in Athens, and Charles W. Chappelle. The school was named for Major John J. Knox of the Freedmen's Bureau. The federal agency helped fund the school. Athens' first African American Postmaster, Madison Davis, was one of those who helped purchase property for the school.
