Newton under Roseberry

Roseberry Topping is a distinctive hill in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated near Great Ayton and Newton under Roseberry. Its summit has a distinctive half-cone shape with a jagged cliff, which has led to many comparisons with the much higher Matterhorn in the Swiss-Italian Alps. It forms a symbolic image of the area and features in the logo for the nearby Teesside International Airport.At 1,049 feet (320 m), Roseberry Topping was traditionally thought to be the highest hill on the North York Moors; however, there are 15 higher peaks with the nearby Urra Moor being the highest, at 1,490 feet (450 m). Roseberry Topping offers views of Captain Cook's Monument at Easby Moor and the monument at Eston Nab, previously a beacon.

Langbaurgh Ridge (grid reference NZ560121) is an 8.0 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near the hamlet of Langbaurgh in North Yorkshire, England, notified in 1986. The site crosses the boundary of the Redcar and Cleveland district and Hambleton District. The site is identified as being of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review for its exposure of the Cleveland Dyke, a Palaeogene intrusion associated with the Mull central volcanic complex.

Cleveland is a land of hills and dales from the River Tees to Vale of Pickering, England. The name means “cliff-land”. The area corresponds to the former Langbaurgh Wapentake. The North York Moors national park, established in 1952, covers part of it. A non-metropolitan county under the same name existed from 1974 to 1996 and there is ambiguity today between that county and the historic extent of the name.

Roseberry Mine was an ironstone mine in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, which operated between 1883 and 1924, with a break of 24 years. Both periods of mining used a form of tramway to transport the ironstone out, which connected with the railway line north of Great Ayton railway station. The mine was located on the south side of Roseberry Topping digging into the hillside. Of the three ironstone mines in the Great Ayton area, Roseberry was the largest. In 1912, the northern slope of Roseberry Topping collapsed and slipped down the hill which has left it with a distinctive shape (it was conically shaped before the landslide). Originally, the ironstone mining was blamed, but modern investigations had concluded that extreme weather events were the cause.

Great Ayton Quaker Meeting House is a historic religious building in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The first Quaker meeting in Great Ayton was established in 1698, and in 1700 the worshippers purchased a house to use for meetings. By 1721, it had been demolished and replaced with a purpose-built meeting house, its garden converted into a burial ground. In 1841, the Great Ayton Friends' School was established next door. In 1967, the meeting house was extended to the east, to add a performance space, and the internal partitions were removed. The building was refurbished in 2001, with an upper floor inserted at the west end. The building has been grade II listed since 1969. The building is constructed of sandstone and red brick, and has a hipped Lakeland slate roof. There is a single storey and a rectangular plan. On the right of the north front is an elliptical arch containing a recessed entrance, and sash windows. The south front contains various openings, including sash windows, and at the east end is a weatherboarded extension.

Great Ayton Friends' School (1841–1997) in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, England, was an independent, co-educational, agricultural boarding school, run by the Religious Society of Friends (the Quakers). The school was situated on High Green on an estate of around 70 acres (280,000 m2). The River Leven (a tributary of the River Tees), ran through the school grounds and was bridged in several places.

Great Ayton is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The River Leven (a tributary of the River Tees) flows through the village, which lies just north of the North York Moors. According to the 2011 Census, the parish has a population of 4,629.

The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum is a museum in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed as a school, on the initiative of Michael Postgate. It was completed in 1704, and was extended and partly rebuilt in 1785. Captain James Cook was educated at the school. The school was later converted to serve as the headquarters of the parish council. In the late 20th century, it was converted into a museum, focusing on the life of Cook, and including a reconstruction of a schoolroom as it would have been in the mid 18th century. The building was grade II listed in 1969. The building comprises a pair of houses with the schoolroom on the left. They are built of sandstone on a plinth, with swept pantile roofs and stone copings, and two storeys. The former cottage has three bays, on the front is a shop window and an inscribed bronze plaque, and at the rear are external steps to a doorway and an inscribed plaque. The two houses have four bays, and contain a doorway with a plain surround. The windows in all parts are horizontally-sliding sashes.

Little Ayton is a village and civil parish in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England and lies immediately south of Great Ayton. The population of this civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Easby, Hambleton. Above the village within the civil parish on Easby Moor is Captain Cook's Monument, a stone obelisk.

Langbaurgh is a hamlet in the civil parish of Great Ayton in North Yorkshire, England. The place gave its name to the Langbaurgh Wapentake.Langbaurgh Hall is a Grade II listed building, dating from 1830.North of the hamlet is the Langbaurgh Ridge, part of the Cleveland Dyke, where stone was quarried to make setts for road construction.

Pinchinthorpe railway station was a railway station on the Middlesbrough and Guisborough Railway (M&GR). It was opened on 25 February 1854 and closed in 1951, thirteen years before the rest of the Nunthorpe–Guisborough branch. It served the village of Pinchinthorpe in North Yorkshire, England, a few miles west of Guisborough railway station.
