Great Ayton

Great Ayton Friends' School (1841–1997) in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, England, was an independent, co-educational, agricultural boarding school, run by the Religious Society of Friends (the Quakers). The school was situated on High Green on an estate of around 70 acres (280,000 m2). The River Leven (a tributary of the River Tees), ran through the school grounds and was bridged in several places.

Great Ayton Quaker Meeting House is a historic religious building in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The first Quaker meeting in Great Ayton was established in 1698, and in 1700 the worshippers purchased a house to use for meetings. By 1721, it had been demolished and replaced with a purpose-built meeting house, its garden converted into a burial ground. In 1841, the Great Ayton Friends' School was established next door. In 1967, the meeting house was extended to the east, to add a performance space, and the internal partitions were removed. The building was refurbished in 2001, with an upper floor inserted at the west end. The building has been grade II listed since 1969. The building is constructed of sandstone and red brick, and has a hipped Lakeland slate roof. There is a single storey and a rectangular plan. On the right of the north front is an elliptical arch containing a recessed entrance, and sash windows. The south front contains various openings, including sash windows, and at the east end is a weatherboarded extension.

The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum is a museum in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed as a school, on the initiative of Michael Postgate. It was completed in 1704, and was extended and partly rebuilt in 1785. Captain James Cook was educated at the school. The school was later converted to serve as the headquarters of the parish council. In the late 20th century, it was converted into a museum, focusing on the life of Cook, and including a reconstruction of a schoolroom as it would have been in the mid 18th century. The building was grade II listed in 1969. The building comprises a pair of houses with the schoolroom on the left. They are built of sandstone on a plinth, with swept pantile roofs and stone copings, and two storeys. The former cottage has three bays, on the front is a shop window and an inscribed bronze plaque, and at the rear are external steps to a doorway and an inscribed plaque. The two houses have four bays, and contain a doorway with a plain surround. The windows in all parts are horizontally-sliding sashes.

Christ Church is the parish church of Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. From the Saxon period to the early 19th century, All Saints' Church, Great Ayton was the local parish church. Between 1876 and 1877, a replacement was built on a new site, with All Saints becoming a mortuary chapel. It was designed by John Ross and Robert Lamb, in a 14th-century Gothic style. Nikolaus Pevsner describes the building as "restless composition, and an uninteresting interior". It was grade II listed in 1966. The church is built of sandstone with a Welsh slate roof, and is in Decorated style. It has a cruciform plan, consisting of a nave, a west narthex, north and south aisles, a south porch, a north transept steeple, and a chancel. The steeple has a tower with two stages, angle buttresses, traceried bell openings, and a broach spire with bands of red sandstone and lucarnes. Inside are preserved three pre-Conquest stones, brought from All Saints.

St Margaret Clitherow's Church is a Catholic church in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. Until the 1960s, Catholics in Great Ayton worshipped at St Joseph's Church, Stokesley. In 1966, a Sunday mass was instituted in the ambulance station in the village. In 1970, a purpose-built timber-framed church was opened on Race Terrace, and in 1971 it was dedicated to Margaret Clitherow, becoming the first church in the world dedicated to the recently canonised saint. In 2002, part of the church was demolished, and a new octagonal building was constructed, the remainder of the old building being retained as a church hall. The new church was designed by DKS Architects and is in red brick with stone details, and a grey tile roof. Two stained glass windows were installed, with designs by Kyme Studios.

The Church of All Saints is a grade I listed building and former parish church for Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, England. The churchyard is known to contain several graves to family members of Captain Cook, a noted seafarer. All Saints was replaced as the main parish church in the 1870s by the Church of Christ. The entire western end of the church, including its tower, was removed in 1880. All Saints is still open for people to be able to visit at certain times of the year.

Little Ayton is a village and civil parish in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England and lies immediately south of Great Ayton. The population of this civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Easby, Hambleton. Above the village within the civil parish on Easby Moor is Captain Cook's Monument, a stone obelisk.

Ayton Hall is a historic building in Great Ayton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The hall was first recorded in the 1280s, when it was owned by the Earl of Westmorland. The current house was built in about 1690, and it was altered and extended over the ensuing centuries. Much of the interior dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the late 20th century, the hall served as a hotel. It was grade II* listed in 1966. The hall has rendered walls, a stone plinth, a deep eaves cornice, and pantile roofs with stone copings and kneelers; the roofs on the wings are hipped with ball finials. There are two storeys and a U-shaped plan, consisting of a main range of four bays, projecting single-bay wings, and a rear wing. In the centre is a doorway with pilasters, impost blocks, a radial fanlight, and an archivolt with a keystone on consoles. The windows are sashes with keystones. The rear wing is in brick and stone and has two storeys and four wide bays. It contains a doorway with a chamfered surround, and door with a flattened Tudor arched head.

Cleveland is a land of hills and dales from the River Tees to Vale of Pickering, England. The name means “cliff-land”. The area corresponds to the former Langbaurgh Wapentake. The North York Moors national park, established in 1952, covers part of it. A non-metropolitan county under the same name existed from 1974 to 1996 and there is ambiguity today between that county and the historic extent of the name.

Langbaurgh Ridge (grid reference NZ560121) is an 8.0 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near the hamlet of Langbaurgh in North Yorkshire, England, notified in 1986. The site crosses the boundary of the Redcar and Cleveland district and Hambleton District. The site is identified as being of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review for its exposure of the Cleveland Dyke, a Palaeogene intrusion associated with the Mull central volcanic complex.

Langbaurgh is a hamlet in the civil parish of Great Ayton in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.
