Horton, Berkshire

Brands Hill is a village in Berkshire, England. It is just on the outskirts of Colnbrook on the Bath Rd adjacent to the Langley junction of the M4 motorway. It has grown from a few houses and has never been a historical village. There are a few shops, including an M&S/BP petrol station. The former Plough Pub, which was a landmark on the bus routes from Hounslow to Slough, was demolished to make way for a hotel, The Holiday Inn, a few years ago. Many of the inhabitants work at Heathrow Airport, and the Royal Mail Depot. The area is significant for its connecting through road, the Colnbrook bypass, which runs through the heart of Brands Hill, linking the M4, and Heathrow airport. Recreation is offered by way of a local public House, the Queens Arms on London Road, the bar in the Holiday Inn Express, Tratts Pizza next door to the hotel and the Brands Hill park. The park offers child's play swings, and a permanent grassed football pitch. Due to the proximity to London Heathrow Terminal 5, the small village offers a few B&Bs, The Airport Guest House, and Gibtel, both on the Brands Hill roundabout.

The Queen Mother Reservoir is a public water supply reservoir that lies between the M4 and the M25 to the west of London, close to Datchet. It is 475 acres (1.92 km2) in size or about 1 km in diameter - making it one of the largest inland areas of water in Southern England. It is managed by Thames Water. This is one of a number of reservoirs to the west of London and was completed in 1976. It was inaugurated on 9 July that year by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, after whom it is named. Its water is pumped from the River Thames nearby. The water improves in quality during its retention in the reservoir as solids settle and organic contaminants are adsorbed and degraded through a combination of natural biological processes aided by sunlight and oxygenation. Water from the reservoir is treated (often using slow sand filters) before being put into supply as London tap water. The reservoir contains a limnological tower.During the design and early construction it was called the Datchet reservoir due to its closeness to the town.Engineering design data for the Queen Mother reservoir is as follows. The reservoir lies within the Colne Valley regional park and like other local reservoirs is popular for sailing and bird-watching. Petrels have been spotted at this reservoir.

Arthur Jacob Nature Reserve is a 4.1-hectare (10-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Horton in Berkshire. It is owned and managed by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.The reserve has four former gravel pits which have been converted from derelict land into lagoons managed for wildlife. There are several islands and the site has been planted with trees and shrubs, while some areas have been turned into wildflower meadows.

Wraysbury railway station serves the village of Wraysbury in Berkshire, England, as well as the larger villages of Stanwell Moor and Poyle. It is 21 miles 40 chains (34.6 km) down the line from London Waterloo. The station is on the line between Windsor and Eton Riverside and Waterloo. Services are operated by South Western Railway. As part of the proposed AirTrack rail link, a new station, to be called Staines High Street railway station would be built between Wraysbury and Staines railway station. This proposal (involving rebuilding a former station) has been in doubt for some years.

Sunnymeads railway station serves the once separate village of Sunnymeads in Berkshire, England, now subsumed by the neighbouring village of Wraysbury. It is 22 miles 48 chains (36.4 km) down the line from London Waterloo, on the line between Windsor and Eton Riverside and Waterloo. It was built in 1927, and has been unmanned since 1969. Services to the station are operated by South Western Railway. A Shere FASTticket machine can be found in front of the disused ticket office. Credit cards can be used to buy tickets. All-day travelcards are also available to buy, as well as tickets for use on underground services in and around the London area. Sunnymeads has one of the lowest passenger usages among stations in South East England with regular services. It has one island platform which is reached by a pedestrian bridge. On the platform there are eight seats. There are no parking facilities or cycle facilities, as the station is at the end of a private road. Taxis can be arranged to pick up and drop off at this station, but there will be no taxis waiting. (The station can also be reached by a staircase from nearby Welley Road, which is a bus route.) There is a help-point for customer information, and visual displays show live train arrivals on the platform. This station is covered by CCTV which links to the South Western Railway security centre in Wimbledon. Due to the short platform length, the ASDO beacon fitted to the South Western Railway fleet (with the exception of class 455) only releases the doors of the front 7 coaches.

Wraysbury No 1 Gravel Pit is a 58.0-hectare (143-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wraysbury in Berkshire. It is part of South West London Waterbodies Ramsar site, and Special Protection Area. The lake has an area of 39.6 hectares (98 acres). The pit was excavated in the 1920s and 1930s with gravel being removed from the site. Over the years plants and wildlife have colonised the area and it is now mature.

Wraysbury is a village and civil parish in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in England. It is under the western approach path of London Heathrow airport. It is located on the east bank of the River Thames, roughly midway between Windsor and Staines-upon-Thames, and 18 miles (29 km) west by south-west of London. Historically part of Buckinghamshire, Wraysbury was made part of the new non-metropolitan county of Berkshire in 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. The Wraysbury Reservoir is located to the east, administratively wholly in the Spelthorne district of Surrey, although it was historically divided between Buckinghamshire and Middlesex.

Wraysbury and Hythe End Gravel Pits is a 117.2-hectare (290-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wraysbury in Berkshire. It is part of South West London Waterbodies Ramsar site and Special Protection Area.The site features four former gravel pits and is within the floodplains of the River Thames and the Colne Brook. It is important for the number of bird species it features.

Wraysbury Reservoir is a water supply reservoir for London, just west of the M25 near the village of Wraysbury, and directly under the western approach path of Heathrow Airport. The reservoir was begun in 1967 and completed by W. & C. French in 1970 with a capacity of 34,000 million litres (8,000 million gallons).Engineering design data for the Wraysbury reservoir is as follows. The reservoir is owned and operated by Thames Water; 400 million litres (100 million gallons) of water are pumped daily from an inlet at Datchet on the River Thames. A neighbouring reservoir is the King George VI Reservoir, opened in 1947, which is supplied from Hythe End. To keep the grass short and make inspections easier, Thames Water maintains a flock of sheep on the earthen banks.The reservoir is the site of the National Physical Laboratory's Open-Water Test Facility, used by the Ministry of Defence for test and calibration of sonar systems, as well as civilian commercial customers.It is a 205.6-hectare (508-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of South West London Waterbodies Ramsar site and Special Protection Area. It has nationally important numbers of wintering cormorants, great crested grebe and shovelers. It also supports many gadwalls.

Ham Island is an inhabited man-made island of roughly 50 hectares (125 acres) in the River Thames in Old Windsor in England. It was a mature meander of the Thames until a channel was dug, the New Cut, to build Old Windsor Lock which reduced the navigable distance by two thirds. The island contains 37 dwellings, a couple of which were abandoned during the 2014 flood.

Colnbrook is a village in the Slough district in Berkshire, England. It lies within the historic boundaries of Buckinghamshire, and straddles two distributaries of the Colne, the Colne Brook and Wraysbury River. These two streams have their confluence just to the southeast of the village. Colnbrook is centred 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Slough town centre, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) east of Windsor, and 19 miles (31 km) west of central London. Colnbrook forms the greater part of the civil parish of Colnbrook with Poyle (see also Poyle). Junctions of the M4 and M25 are near the village. To the east is Longford, London, and Bedfont and Stanwell which abut the south of London Heathrow Airport. Colnbrook with Poyle is a suburban parish with significant industrial units, logistical premises and open land. The parish was created on 1 April 1995 as an amalgamation of Colnbrook from Iver to the north and the smaller Poyle from an unparished area of Stanwell to the south-east. At the 2011 census the whole civil parish had a population of 6,157 living in 2,533 homes.

Colnbrook with Poyle is a civil parish in the borough of Slough in Berkshire, England. Located approximately 17 miles (27 km) west of central London and adjacent to the Greater London boundary, it is an urbanised parish with some industrial development and open land. The local council is Colnbrook with Poyle Parish Council. The parish was created on 1 April 1995 as an amalgamation of Colnbrook from the parish of Iver with Poyle from an unparished area. At the 2001 census it had a population of 5,426.
