Ambattur is located in northwestern part of Chennai City, in Ambattur taluk of the Chennai District, surrounded by Avadi, Anna Nagar, Padi, Mogappair, Kallikuppam, Surapet, Korattur, Ayappakkam, Athipet and Thiruverkadu. It covers an area of 45 km2 (17 sq mi). The neighbourhood is served by Ambattur railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway. Ambattur has its origins in a village of the same name which can be located at present as areas opposite to Ambattur telephone exchange. Ambattur was a village with large extents of agricultural farm lands irrigated by the once-sprawling Ambattur Lake. In 2011, the neighbourhood had a population 466,205.

Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital is a multi-speciality hospital in Ambattur, Chennai, India. The hospital is named after Sir Ivan Stedeford, the British industrialist and philanthropist. The hospital was opened on 25 February 1966 and is managed by the AMM Foundation. It is situated 3 km from the Ambattur rail-bridge on the Ambattur–Avadi road, about a kilometer from the Ambattur—Red Hills Road intersection. The hospital has been certified with ISO 9001-2008 for Quality Health Care Service by BVQI, London in 2010.

Oragadam has developed from being a rural area along the Redhills high road to become one of the important residential localities of Ambattur. Ambattur aeri, or Ambattur lake, is a rain-fed reservoir which reaches top levels during the monsoon seasons. In November 2008, incessant monsoon rain filled the lake and encroachments on the north and south banks of the lake were demolished. It also caters to the drinking water needs of the Chennai city after Poondi and Chembarambakkam Lake. Ambattur aeri is one of a chain of three water bodies, including the Korattur aeri and the Madhavaram aeri, where surplus water from one is transported to another.
