Nevada State Prison (NSP) was a penitentiary located in Carson City. The prison was in continuous operation since its establishment in 1862 and was managed by the Nevada Department of Corrections. It was one of the oldest prisons still operating in the United States. The high security facility housed 219 inmates in September 2011. It was designed to hold 841 inmates and employed a staff of 211.In the early 20th century, the prison became the sole designated facility for executions by the state of Nevada. It carried out the first death sentence by gas chamber in the United States with the execution of Gee Jon on February 8, 1924.The state of Nevada chose to close the facility for budgetary reasons. The prison closed its doors on May 18, 2012, with all inmates transferred to other institutions or released. Although the prison has closed, it was still designated as the site of executions for the State of Nevada, until the current execution chamber at Ely State Prison opened in 2016.

The Gold Dust West Carson City (formerly the Pinon Plaza Hotel Casino) is a casino hotel located on Hwy 50 in Carson City, Nevada. The Gold Dust West contains 17,600 square feet (1,640 m2) of gaming space, with table games, video poker machines, and slots. The Gold Dust West hotel has 142 rooms. The facility also has a bowling center, snack bar, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a large hot tub (open in the summer). Like the Gold Dust West Casino in Reno, Nevada, this facility is owned and operated by Jacobs Entertainment. The Pinon Plaza was owned by Clark Russell, who had owned the Carson Station Hotel Casino in Carson City. Russell operated a shuttle bus system that ran for several years between the Carson Station and the Pinon Plaza.

The Kitzmeyer Furniture Factory, at 319 N. Carson St. in Carson City, Nevada, is a historic building built in 1873. It is the oldest surviving Italianate-style commercial buildings in the commercial core area of Carson City.It was built to provide a furniture showroom on the ground floor and furniture factory space above, and served in this way until 1901. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Carson City Civic Auditorium, at 813 N. Carson St. in Carson City, Nevada, was designed by architect Lehman A. Ferris and was built during 1938–39. It was funded by a municipal bond and by the Public Works Administration. Also known simply as Municipal Auditorium, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Since 1994, the building has served as the location for the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.It was deemed significant as a depression era works project and also "as a rare example of a monumentally-scaled Romanesque Revival-styled building in Nevada".

The Carson River Canyon is a scenic canyon in Lyon County, Nevada through which the Carson River flows. The city of Carson City, Nevada is currently working to purchase 900 acres of the canyon for open space and recreational purposes. The canyon was used for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad during the Nevada silver boom. The railroad line is being partially reconstructed for tourism purposes.
