Bedford Historic District is a national historic district located at Bedford, Virginia. The district encompasses 208 contributing buildings in two residential neighborhoods of Bedford, known locally as the Old Avenel area and the Longwood Avenue area. The buildings are in a variety of 19th- and early 20th-century architectural styles. Notable buildings include Chestnut, Winthrop, the Thomas L. Leftwich House, Liberty Presbyterian Church (1844), John Wharton House (1848), Burks-Guy House (1884), Charles W. Wharton House (now the Bedford Children's Library), the Harrison Building (1878), George L. Colgate House (1892), Bedford Masonic Hall (1895), Citizens Bank Building (Bedford, Virginia), Bedford High School (1928), Bedford County Courthouse (1930), Bedford Elementary School (1912), Main Street Methodist Church (1880s), and St. John's Episcopal Church (1923). Avenel (1836) and the John D. Ballard House (1915) are separately listed.The District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

John D. Ballard House, also known as the Ballard-Worsham House, is a historic home located at Bedford, Virginia. It was designed by noted Lynchburg architect Stanhope S. Johnson and built in 1915. It is a two-story, brick dwelling in the Colonial Revival style. It has a steep deck-on-hip roof with terra cotta Spanish roofing tiles, a formal front facade with segmentally arched windows, and a one-story front portico, with grouped Doric order columns. Also on the property is a contributing meat house / tool shed.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is located in the Bedford Historic District.

Bedford station was an intercity rail station located in Bedford, Virginia. It was served by Norfolk and Western Railway passenger trains until 1971. It was later served by Amtrak's Mountaineer from 1975 to 1977, then the Hilltopper until 1979. The station building remains extant and is used as a restaurant.

Bedford Historic Meetinghouse, also known as Methodist Meetinghouse and St. Philip's Episcopal Church, is a historic meeting house located at 153 W. Main Street in Bedford, Virginia. It was built in 1838, and is a brick building measuring 38 feet by 58 feet and in the Greek Revival style. It features a shallow, pedimented gable roof topped by a square belfry with a stubby, tapered spire. It was built as Bedford's first Methodist Church and houses the headquarters of the Bedford Historical Society.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library is the county museum and genealogical library for Bedford County, Virginia It was started in 1932 by the General William R. Terry chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Peaks of Otter chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. It was in multiple locations in the town of Bedford, VA including the Courthouse and the library. It finally found its permanent home in 1979 when it moved into the former Masonic Hall for Liberty Lodge #95. The National D-Day Memorial is a war memorial located in Bedford, Virginia. It serves as the national memorial for American D-Day veterans. However, its scope is international in that it states, "In Tribute to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of Allied Forces on D-Day, June 6, 1944" and commends all Allied Armed Forces during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, during World War II.The memorial, bordering the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern Virginia, is an area of over 50 acres (200,000 m2) that overlooks the town of Bedford. It officially opened on June 6, 2001, with 15,000 people present, including then-President George W. Bush. About 60,000 people have visited the memorial each year. Of those, more than half are from outside of Virginia.

Three Otters is a historic home near Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia. Built about 1827 by local artisans following the pattern book of Asher Benjamin for a local merchant, the large, two-story, brick dwelling exemplifies the Greek Revival style. It is approximately 50 feet square, with a low pitched hipped roof. The original two-story kitchen and pantry outbuilding is connected to the main house by a covered walkway and a two-story brick-and-frame addition. There are a contributing brick well house, chicken house, and necessary.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The county was named in honor of John Russell, an English statesman and fourth Duke of Bedford. Bedford County is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, Bedford's population was 79,462. The county population has more than doubled since 1980.
