Saltmarshe Hall

Saltmarshe is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Laxton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. Saltmarshe is approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Howden and 21 miles (34 km) south-east from York. In 1931 the parish had a population of 82.Saltmarshe lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent, placed as the 10th most affluent in the country in a Barclays Private Clients survey, and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country. Saltmarshe Hall is a Grade II* listed 19th-century country house on the western edge of the hamlet.Saltmarshe railway station is on the Sheffield to Hull Line. It is named after Saltmarshe, but is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north near the village of Laxton.

In 1823 Laxton was in the civil parish of Howden, and in the Wapentake and Liberty of Howdenshire. Population at the time was 268. Occupations included seven farmers, two carpenters, a corn miller, a tailor, a shopkeeper, a shoemaker, a schoolmaster and public house landlords of the White Horse; the Mason's Arms, who was also a bricklayer; and the Cross Keys, who was also a blacksmith. Resident was the ecclesiastical parish curate and a Philip Saltmarshe, Esquire of Saltmarshe.

Swinefleet is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of the town of Goole on the A161 road from Goole to Crowle. It lies on the south bank of the River Ouse. According to the 2011 UK census, Swinefleet parish had a population of 787, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 748. The main centre of population is at the extreme north of the parish, close to the River Ouse. The southern part of the parish is part of Swinefleet and Reedness Moors, and is characterised by drainage ditches and a few farm buildings.A local bus company, known as Sweyne Coaches is based in Swinefleet. They used to run public services between Scunthorpe and Goole but still do school services for Goole High School and the Holy Family Catholic High School in Carlton, and private hire services. The public services have been taken over by East Yorkshire Motor Service in 2015. It is also home to the Swinefleet Peat Works, which is now derelict.

The Skelton Viaduct, also known as the Hook bridge or Goole railway swing bridge, is a large viaducted hogback plate girder bridge with swing span over the River Ouse, Yorkshire near Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The bridge was designed by Thomas Elliot Harrison for the Hull and Doncaster Branch of the North Eastern Railway and opened in 1869. In the latter part of the 20th century, the bridge became known for the frequent incidents involving ship collisions with the superstructure. As of 2022, it is still in use.

The civil parish is formed by the villages of Kilpin and Kilpin Pike and the hamlets of Balkholme, Belby, Howdendyke and Skelton. According to the 2011 UK census, Kilpin parish had a population of 339, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 357.In 1823 Kilpin was in the parish of Howden and the Wapentake and Liberty of Howdenshire. Population at the time was 318, and included four farmers and a yeoman.

Howdenshire was a wapentake and a liberty of England, lying around the town of Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire.In the Anglo-Saxon period, the district was under the control of Peterborough's monastery, but it was confiscated by Edward the Confessor, and then given to the Bishop of Durham by William I of England. It came to operate as an exclave of County Durham, much like Allertonshire, but under the dean of Durham rather than the bishop. This peculiarity was abolished in 1846, but the district is still in use for certain administrative purposes.

There is also a small local post office and two public houses. The village a number of building sites for the purpose of housing development. Nearby Goole has facilities including Tesco, Morrisons and Asda supermarkets, several chain-shops, schools, a hospital, and a railway station with services to Hull, Doncaster and Leeds.
