Cotness

Reedness is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) east of the town of Goole and lies on the south bank of the River Ouse. The civil parish is formed by the village of Reedness and the hamlet of Little Reedness. According to the 2011 UK census, Reedness parish had a population of 339, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 355.The parish was part of the Goole Rural District in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974, then in Boothferry district of Humberside until 1996.

It is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. Saltmarshe is approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Howden and 21 miles (34 km) south-east from York. In 1931 the parish had a population of 82.Saltmarshe lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent, placed as the 10th most affluent in the country in a Barclays Private Clients survey, and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country. Saltmarshe Hall is a Grade II* listed 19th-century country house on the western edge of the hamlet.Saltmarshe railway station is on the Sheffield to Hull Line. It is named after Saltmarshe, but is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north near the village of Laxton.

The village is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) east from Howden and 19 miles (31 km) south-east from the county town of York. The civil parish is formed by the village of Laxton and the hamlets of Cotness, Metham and Saltmarshe. A very small part of Yokefleet also falls within the parish. According to the 2011 UK census, Laxton parish had a population of 314, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 322.Laxton lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent, placed as the 10th most affluent in the country in a Barclays Private Clients survey, and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country.The village is served by Saltmarshe railway station on the Sheffield to Hull Line. In 1823 Laxton was in the civil parish of Howden, and in the Wapentake and Liberty of Howdenshire. Population at the time was 268. Occupations included seven farmers, two carpenters, a corn miller, a tailor, a shopkeeper, a shoemaker, a schoolmaster and public house landlords of the White Horse; the Mason's Arms, who was also a bricklayer; and the Cross Keys, who was also a blacksmith. Resident was the ecclesiastical parish curate and a Philip Saltmarshe, Esquire of Saltmarshe.

It lies 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. Metham forms part of the civil parish of Laxton.

Saltmarshe railway station is a railway station on the Hull and Doncaster Branch between Goole and Gilberdyke stations. It serves the village of Laxton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in 1869 as part of the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Doncaster Branch.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is an Anglican church in the hamlet of Whitgift, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The church is noted for its clock which displays the number 13 in Roman numerals in what should be the 12 o'clock position – the only one in Britain to do so. The church itself is a grade I listed building, and the churchyard contains two grade II listed structures.

Saltmarshe Hall is a grade II* listed 19th-century country house in Saltmarshe, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, on the north bank of the River Ouse across from Goole. It stands in 17 acres of gardens. It is constructed of brick faced with ashlar with Welsh slate roofs. The square two storey main building has a five-bay frontage with a five-bay servant's wing attached.

Whitgift is a small linear village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Twin Rivers, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Goole. It is located alongside the River Ouse and north of the A161 road between Goole and Scunthorpe. Ousefleet and Reedness are to the east and west respectively. Historically Whitgift was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1961 the parish had a population of 191.

A very small part of Yokefleet is in the civil parish of Laxton. It is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. In 1931 the parish had a population of 102.Yokefleet is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east from Howden and 20 miles (32 km) south-east from the county town of York. Yokefleet lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent, placed as the 10th most affluent in the country in a Barclays Private Clients survey, and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country.Yokefleet Hall is a Grade II listed mansion house of Victorian design by architect Cuthbert Brodrick. The hall is on the eastern edge of the hamlet and the current house was built between 1868 and 1874 according to the York Georgian Society.

Howdenshire was a wapentake and a liberty of England, lying around the town of Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire.In the Anglo-Saxon period, the district was under the control of Peterborough's monastery, but it was confiscated by Edward the Confessor, and then given to the Bishop of Durham by William I of England. It came to operate as an exclave of County Durham, much like Allertonshire, but under the dean of Durham rather than the bishop. This peculiarity was abolished in 1846, but the district is still in use for certain administrative purposes.

In 1931 the parish had a population of 78.Balkholme is to the south of the B1230 Howden to Gilberdyke road as it crosses the M62 motorway, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of the parish village of Kilpin. The county town of Beverley is 17 miles (27 km) to the north-east, the town of Howden 2.5 miles (4 km) west, and the town centre of Goole approximately 4 miles (6 km) south-west. In 1823, Baines recorded that Balkholme was in the parish of Howden, and the wapentake and liberty of Howdenshire, and had a population of 105 including eight farmers. Balkholme was formerly a township in the parish of Howden, from 1866 Balkholme was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Kilpin and Eastrington, part also went to form Gilberdyke.At the east side of Balkholme is West Linton Farmhouse, a Grade II listed late 18th-century house, of two-storeys and three-bays. It is built of red brick in Flemish bond, with pantile roof, and has a 19th-century wing.There is a small RAF memorial garden on Brow Lane where a mid-air collision occurred during the Second World War between two Halifax Bombers of 578 Squadron.
