Isel Hall

St Michael's Church is located by the side of the River Derwent in the dispersed settlement of Isel, in the civil parish of Blindcrake, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Derwent, the archdeaconry of West Cumberland, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of nine local churches to form the benefice of Binsey. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Blindcrake is a village and civil parish within the Isel Valley, in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 287, increasing to 348 at the 2011 Census. The parish includes Blindcrake village and the hamlets of Redmain, Isel and Sunderland. Blindcrake village is one of 23 designated conservation areas of the National Park Planning Authority,. this status is largely based on its mediaeval strip field pattern which is described as "undoubtedly the finest example of its type in the Lake District".

Watch Hill is a small hill lying on the north-western fringe of the Lake District in England. The name Setmurthy Common is sometimes used (including by Alfred Wainwright in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland) to refer to the area including the highest point, with "Watch Hill" describing the area to the west of the summit. It should not be confused with another Watch Hill some 19 km to the south-west, near Whitehaven, which is only 172 m (564 ft) high. The name "The Hay" is also used when referring to the area west of the summit. Despite its low height (just 833 feet) it is a Marilyn (a hill with topographic prominence of at least 150m) because of the large height separation from its neighbours. This 'detachedness' means that it is an excellent viewpoint. Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Lord's Seat group and Grisedale Pike are all seen, and there is a first-class view of the Cockermouth area and the Solway Coast AONB. The hill is a popular climb with Cockermouth folk, along with its lower neighbour Slate Fell. Wainwright recommends an ascent from the west and a return on the same route. He comments that "It is easily attained with a minimum of effort: a stroll on grass so simple that boots are incongruous footwear for it and bare feet appropriate".

Clints Crags is a small fell in the north of the English Lake District near Blindcrake, Cumbria. It has its own chapter in Alfred Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He describes a circular walk from Blindcrake, and laments that at the time of writing (1974): "This is a walk on public footpaths, but until somebody removes the barbed wire and other obstacles to legitimate progress it can be recommended only to gymnasts." It reaches 804 feet (245 m). Since the time of writing the barbed wire has been removed and the path to the summit is clear of obstructions. Clints Crags offers a pleasant and easy stroll to the summit from the village of Blindcrake. The gradient of the crags is much steeper rising north out of the Isel valley, however there are no footpaths to the crags from the valley bottom. There is an old limestone quarry near the summit of the hill, this is now an SSSI, being home to a rare species of newt that breeds in the old quarry lakes. The summit is a large expanse of limestone outcrops and pavement, which is also a designated SSSI. The fragile limestone habitat supports various rare calcareous species of flora and fauna.

Isel is a dispersed settlement and area in the valley of the River Derwent within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is an ecclesiastical parish within the civil parish of Blindcrake. Nearby are the hamlets of Setmurthy, Sunderland and Redmain, and the village of Blindcrake. Isel is a rural community, with a church, a manorial Hall and several farms ranging from dairy to poultry, but lacking basic local facilities having no shop, public house or post office. It is mentioned in the English folk song "Horn of the Hunter." Isel Parish Church is dedicated to St Michael and the fabric is chiefly Norman. The church contains two pre-Norman carved stones, one of which is a fragment of a cross. Other buildings of interest are Isel Hall (with a pele tower), the ancient bridge of three arches (rebuilt in 1812) and the old vicarage.

Redmain is a small hamlet in the Isel Valley and parish of Blindcrake within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. The hamlet lies on the south-facing slopes above the River Derwent, in an elevated position of 475 feet (145 m), giving panoramas across the Isel Valley and Lake District Fells. Nearby are the hamlets of Isel and Sunderland and the village of Blindcrake. The hamlet is just under four miles north-east of Cockermouth, off the old Roman road to Carlisle (A595). It is 12 miles from Keswick and, along the A66, it is 29 miles from the M6 motorway at Penrith.

Embleton railway station was situated on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway between Penrith and Cockermouth in Cumberland (now in Cumbria), England. The station served the village of Embleton. The station opened to passenger traffic on 2 January 1865, and closed on 15 September 1958.Two camping coaches were positioned here by the London Midland Region in 1954.All trace of the station building has gone although the Station Master's house survives as a private residence on the side of the A66.

Embleton is a small village and civil parish located in the Allerdale district in Cumbria, England. It is located east of Cockermouth on the A66 road, and within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. As of the 2001 census the parish had a population of 297, reducing slightly to 294 at the 2011 Census.Embleton railway station opened in 1865, on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway, and was closed by British Rail in 1958 although the railway through the village survived until 1966. The trackbed has now been used for the route of the A66 road. Sometime around 1854 a schoolmaster digging in commonland at Embleton came across a hoard of weapons dating to the 1st century AD, the transition between the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period. It comprised three iron spearheads and two swords, one of which was in a decorated copper-alloy scabbard. The latter object can now be seen in the British Museum

Slate Fell is a low hill in the North Western part of the English Lake District. It lies only about a mile from the busy market town of Cockermouth, and as such is a popular walk for local dog walkers, the amount of climb being only about 80 metres (250 feet). A public right of way passes over the summit. It is an outlier of the Marilyn Watch Hill, and gives good views of the Lord's Seat group of hills, although it is too low to afford views towards the central Lake District. It lies just inside the boundary of the Lake District National Park.

Sunderland is a hamlet and former civil parish, within the Lake District National Park, now in the parish of Blindcrake in the Allerdale district of the county of Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland. In 1931 the parish had a population of 60.

Setmurthy is a civil parish in Allerdale, Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland, within the Lake District National Park in England. In the 2011 census it had a population of 110. The spelling "Satmurthawe" is seen in 1473.The River Derwent forms the northern and eastern boundary of the parish, separating it from Blindcrake. Bassenthwaite Lake forms the eastern boundary, and the parish is then bordered by Above Derwent to the south east, Embleton to the west and south, and Cockermouth and Bridekirk to the west. The main settlement is the hamlet of Dubwath.The parish church of St Barnabas, built in 1794, is grade II listed; it is in the Diocese of Carlisle and the Binsey Mission Community.Watch Hill, also known as Setmurthy Common, reaches 254 metres (833 ft) and because of its relative isolation qualifies as a marilyn, a hill with 150 m of topographic prominence. Arkleby is a village in Cumbria, England. It is located about 1 mile south of Aspatria and 9 miles south-west of Wigton. Arkleby is part of the civil parish of Plumbland and is a short distance from the village of Parsonby and larger village of Plumbland. Arkleby Hall, a farmhouse, dates from 1725 and is a Grade II listed building. St Cuthbert's Church, the parish church of Plumbland, is located in between Arkleby and Parsonby. The church was built in 1871 by J.A. Cory, incorporating the fabric of an earlier 13th century church on the site; it is a Grade II listed building.
