Isel is a dispersed settlement and area in the valley of the River Derwent within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is an ecclesiastical parish within the civil parish of Blindcrake. Nearby are the hamlets of Setmurthy, Sunderland and Redmain, and the village of Blindcrake. Isel is a rural community, with a church, a manorial Hall and several farms ranging from dairy to poultry, but lacking basic local facilities having no shop, public house or post office. It is mentioned in the English folk song "Horn of the Hunter." Isel Parish Church is dedicated to St Michael and the fabric is chiefly Norman. The church contains two pre-Norman carved stones, one of which is a fragment of a cross. Other buildings of interest are Isel Hall (with a pele tower), the ancient bridge of three arches (rebuilt in 1812) and the old vicarage.

Clints Crags is a small fell in the north of the English Lake District near Blindcrake, Cumbria. It has its own chapter in Alfred Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He describes a circular walk from Blindcrake, and laments that at the time of writing (1974): "This is a walk on public footpaths, but until somebody removes the barbed wire and other obstacles to legitimate progress it can be recommended only to gymnasts." It reaches 804 feet (245 m). Since the time of writing the barbed wire has been removed and the path to the summit is clear of obstructions. Clints Crags offers a pleasant and easy stroll to the summit from the village of Blindcrake. The gradient of the crags is much steeper rising north out of the Isel valley, however there are no footpaths to the crags from the valley bottom. There is an old limestone quarry near the summit of the hill, this is now an SSSI, being home to a rare species of newt that breeds in the old quarry lakes. The summit is a large expanse of limestone outcrops and pavement, which is also a designated SSSI. The fragile limestone habitat supports various rare calcareous species of flora and fauna.

Blindcrake is a village and civil parish within the Isel Valley, in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 287, increasing to 348 at the 2011 Census. The parish includes Blindcrake village and the hamlets of Redmain, Isel and Sunderland. Blindcrake village is one of 23 designated conservation areas of the National Park Planning Authority,. this status is largely based on its mediaeval strip field pattern which is described as "undoubtedly the finest example of its type in the Lake District".

Setmurthy is a civil parish in Allerdale, Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland, within the Lake District National Park in England. In the 2011 census it had a population of 110. The spelling "Satmurthawe" is seen in 1473.The River Derwent forms the northern and eastern boundary of the parish, separating it from Blindcrake. Bassenthwaite Lake forms the eastern boundary, and the parish is then bordered by Above Derwent to the south east, Embleton to the west and south, and Cockermouth and Bridekirk to the west. The main settlement is the hamlet of Dubwath.The parish church of St Barnabas, built in 1794, is grade II listed; it is in the Diocese of Carlisle and the Binsey Mission Community.Watch Hill, also known as Setmurthy Common, reaches 254 metres (833 ft) and because of its relative isolation qualifies as a marilyn, a hill with 150 m of topographic prominence. Alfred Wainwright includes it in his The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, recommending an ascent from the west and a return on the same route. He comments that "It is easily attained with a minimum of effort: a stroll on grass so simple that boots are incongruous footwear for it and bare feet appropriate".

St Michael's Church is located by the side of the River Derwent in the dispersed settlement of Isel, in the civil parish of Blindcrake, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Derwent, the archdeaconry of West Cumberland, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of nine local churches to form the benefice of Binsey. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Isel Hall is an ancient Cumbrian residence that sits on a steep rise on the northern banks of the River Derwent, two miles (3.2 km) south of Bassenthwaite Lake, three miles (4.8 km) east-north-east of Cockermouth, with views over the Lake District fells and Skiddaw. It was once the home of the Lawson family and is a grade I listed building.

Watch Hill is a small hill lying on the north-western fringe of the Lake District in England. The name Setmurthy Common is sometimes used (including by Alfred Wainwright in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland) to refer to the area including the highest point, with "Watch Hill" describing the area to the west of the summit. It should not be confused with another Watch Hill some 19 km to the south-west, near Whitehaven, which is only 172 m (564 ft) high. The name "The Hay" is also used when referring to the area west of the summit. Despite its low height (just 833 feet) it is a Marilyn (a hill with topographic prominence of at least 150m) because of the large height separation from its neighbours. This 'detachedness' means that it is an excellent viewpoint. Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Lord's Seat group and Grisedale Pike are all seen, and there is a first-class view of the Cockermouth area and the Solway Coast AONB. The hill is a popular climb with Cockermouth folk, along with its lower neighbour Slate Fell. Wainwright recommends an ascent from the west and a return on the same route. Dubwath is a hamlet in the Allerdale district, in Cumbria, England. It is part of the parish of Setmurthy. The population of this civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was 148.It is situated on the B5291 road between Cockermouth and Keswick. It is directly adjacent to Bassenthwaite Lake (a popular sailing location). It used to be served by Bassenthwaite Lake railway station, the railway now having been replaced with an A road, the A66. It is on the Workington to Penrith via Keswick bus route. Dubwath contains a sailing club and a restaurant called Pheasant Inn. Most of the buildings date back to Victorian times. Rallies are often staged on the roads around Dubwath. The sailing club is a popular tourist location, particularly during 'Bass week' in the summer. At Dubwath Silver Meadows lottery-funded Bassenthwaite Reflections has established the Lake District's first wetlands nature reserve. The 7.15 hectares (17.7 acres) site at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake is a wildlife haven for nature lovers and bird watchers and an excellent example of 'fen' habitat. It is accessible by wheelchairs and uses recycled plastic boardwalks. There are viewing points for birdlife and red squirrels - all encouraged by regularly topped up feeders.

Armathwaite Hall is a luxury hotel and spa adjacent to Bassenthwaite Lake, in Cumbria.

Bassenthwaite Lake railway station was situated on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway between Penrith and Cockermouth in Cumbria, England. The station served the village of Dubwath. The station opened to passenger traffic on 2 January 1865, and closed on 18 April 1966. A camping coach was positioned here by the London Midland Region in 1954 this was increased to three coaches in 1955 and then two coaches from 1956 to 1964.The station building and one platform are still visible from the A66 through the trees although the station fell into a state of disrepair and lost its roof. The Station Master's house remains on the side of the A66 but the east bound platform and goods yards are now part of the road. In 2019 a replica French-style steam locomotive with Wagons-Lits carriages used in the 2017 film of Murder on the Orient Express were installed on the site as part of a tourist development.

Routenbeck is a hamlet in Cumbria, England. It is located at the northern foot of Sale Fell, near the north-west edge of Bassenthwaite Lake. Routenbeck is just over 2 miles south-west of the village of Bassenthwaite and 5 miles east of the town of Cockermouth. It contains an Old Vicarage. The nearest pub is the Pheasant Inn, about a third of a mile along the road to the north-east.

Embleton is a small village and civil parish located in the Allerdale district in Cumbria, England. It is located east of Cockermouth on the A66 road, and within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. As of the 2001 census the parish had a population of 297, reducing slightly to 294 at the 2011 Census.Embleton railway station opened in 1865, on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway, and was closed by British Rail in 1958 although the railway through the village survived until 1966. The trackbed has now been used for the route of the A66 road. Sometime around 1854 a schoolmaster digging in commonland at Embleton came across a hoard of weapons dating to the 1st century AD, the transition between the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period. It comprised three iron spearheads and two swords, one of which was in a decorated copper-alloy scabbard. The latter object can now be seen in the British Museum
