Giessen-Nieuwkerk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌɣisəˈniukɛr(ə)k]) is a former town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is now called Giessenburg. It is also the name of a former municipality, that existed until 1957, when it merged with Peursum to form the new municipality of Giessenburg. The name means "Giessen-New Church", and refers to the small river Giessen. The town Giessen-Oudekerk ("Giessen-Old Church") is located 2 km southwest.

It was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1956, when it became part of Giessenburg. In 1857, Peursum was enlarged with the former municipality of Nederslingeland.

In 2017, the village of Schelluinen had 1,426 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 0.23 km², and contained 342 residences. The statistical area "Schelluinen", which can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 1240. Schelluinen was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1986, when it became part of Giessenlanden, which in 2019 merged into Molenlanden.

It is a part of the municipality of Molenlanden, and lies about 8 km west of Gorinchem. The statistical area "Giessen-Oudekerk", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 890.

Van der Giessen de Noord (Dutch pronunciation: [vɑn dər ˈɣisə(n) də ˈnoːrt]) was a shipbuilding company that mainly built ferries, located in Krimpen aan den IJssel, a town in the western Netherlands. The yard was especially suited to the construction of large vessels due to its developed undercover facilities. The shipyard was founded in 1820. After World War II, the company expanded significantly in the building of larger ships. Owned by IHC Caland (now SBM Offshore), the yard went into liquidation in October 2003 primarily due to aggressive competition from other parts of the world such as South Korea. It had not received any orders for new vessels since 2000.

The Boven Merwede (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌboːvəˈmɛrʋeːdə], Upper Merwede) is a stretch of river in the Netherlands, mainly fed by the river Rhine. The Afgedamde Maas river joins the Waal at Woudrichem to form the Boven Merwede, which at Hardinxveld-Giessendam splits into the Beneden Merwede river on the right and the Nieuwe Merwede river on the left. Its length is 8.8 km (5.5 mi). The Merwede is part of the main shipping route between Rotterdam and Germany. A road bridge connects the west side of Gorinchem on the north to the west side of Sleeuwijk on the south. There are three passenger ferries.
