Cos Cob is a neighborhood and census-designated place in the town of Greenwich, Connecticut. It is located on the Connecticut shoreline in southern Fairfield County. It had a population of 6,770 at the 2010 census.Cos Cob is located on the western side of the mouth of the Mianus River. The American Impressionist Cos Cob Art Colony flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An offshoot of the group, the Greenwich Art Society, continues to support local artists in town. The town of Greenwich is one political and taxing body, but consists of several distinct sections or neighborhoods, such as Banksville, Byram, Cos Cob, Glenville, Mianus, Old Greenwich, Riverside and Greenwich (sometimes referred to as central, or downtown, Greenwich). Of these neighborhoods, three (Cos Cob, Old Greenwich, and Riverside) have separate postal names and ZIP codes. From 1883 to 1885, the official post office name of Cos Cob was Bayport. In 2015, Forbes ranked Cos Cob the 287th wealthiest place in the US with a median house sale price of $1,329,107.

Cos Cob station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in the Cos Cob district of Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Strickland Road Historic District of Greenwich, Connecticut is a 9-acre (3.6 ha) historic district that was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The district extends along Strickland Road in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich, between its junction River Road in the south, to just north of its junction with Loughlin Road in the north. It represents a well-preserved cross-section of residential architecture dating coverint a 200-year period, from about 1740 to 1934. It includes the c. 1730 Bush-Holley House, a historic house museum which is a National Historic Landmark for it role in the Cos Cob art colony. There are 28 primary contributing buildings in the district. Most of the buildings are wood-frame structures between one and three stories in height; the notable exceptions are two of the later houses, which are Tudor Revival in style and have brick and stucco exteriors.The Cos Cob area was settled in the 17th century as a colonial maritime community, at first by Dutch settlers (as part of New Netherland) and later by English settlers. The Strickland Road area was known as the Lower Landing, and flourished in the 18th century, particularly through the efforts of David Bush, the Dutch builder of the Bush-Holley House. It was primarily a transportation center, with packet boats serving other area ports, and some of the finer houses on Strickland Road were built by sea captains. The area declined in importance after the packet boats were supplanted by the railroad in the mid-19th century, and became a residential enclave. Its last major industrial site, a tidal grist mill, burned in 1899. Most of the buildings in the district date to the early 20th century, in the Bungalow and Tudor Revival styles popular at that time.

Riverside station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in the Riverside area of Greenwich, Connecticut. The Riverside Avenue Bridge crosses over the west end of the station platforms.

The River Road-Mead Avenue Historic District encompasses a well-preserved late-19th century upper-class residential area in the Cos Cob area of Greenwich, Connecticut. Extending along River Road between Mead Avenue and Robertson Lane, and along Mead Avenue most of the way to East Putnam Avenue, the district includes fourteen fine houses, most of which were built between 1870 and 1907. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Mianus River Railroad Bridge, also known as the Cos Cob Bridge, is a bascule drawbridge built in 1904 over the Mianus River, in Greenwich, Connecticut. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The bridge carries the Northeast Corridor, the busiest rail line in the United States, both in terms of ridership and service frequency. It is operated by the Metro-North Railroad, successor to Conrail, Penn Central, and the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, which erected it, and is owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. It is a rolling lift type moveable bridge, and was prefabricated by the American Bridge Company, to replace a previous unsafe bridge on the site. It has a total length of 1,059 feet (323 m), divided into 11 spans. Seven of these are deck truss spans, while the others are deck girder spans, all set on stone abutments. The main movable span is 107 feet (33 m) long; four of the truss spans are 120 feet (37 m) in length. It is one of eight moveable bridges on the Northeast Corridor through Connecticut surveyed in one multiple property study in 1986. The eight bridges from west to east are: this Mianus River Railroad Bridge, at Cos Cob, built in 1904; Norwalk River Railroad Bridge at South Norwalk, 1896; Saugatuck River Railroad Bridge at Westport, 1905; Pequonnock River Railroad Bridge at Bridgeport, 1902; Housatonic River Railroad Bridge, at Devon, 1905; Connecticut River Railroad Bridge, Old Saybrook-Old Lyme, 1907; Niantic River Bridge, East Lyme-Waterford, 1907; and Thames River Bridge (Amtrak), Groton, built in 1919. The Pequonnock River bridge—also on Metro-North's New Haven Line, as are the Norwalk, Westport, and Devon bridges—has since been replaced.

Cos Cob Power Station was a historic power station near the Metro-North Railroad tracks, the Mianus River and Sound Shore Drive in the Cos Cob area of Greenwich, Connecticut. The Spanish Revival style station building of 1907 was significant as part of the first mainline railroad electrification in the United States, using alternating current (AC) electrification. The New York City subway systems and a Hudson River railroad line used lower voltage direct current (DC) electrification, but for longer distances that would mean high transmission losses or frequent and closely spaced substations.: 11 A 1903 New York State law prohibited the use of steam locomotives in New York City. The New Haven line of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad ran commuter trains into the city, and electrification all the way to New Haven would avoid massive congestion and delays to commuter trains if locomotives were changed at the New York City limits or at Stamford, CT. The "New Haven" chose AC electrification as proposed by Baldwin-Westinghouse, with locomotives which could operate on the third-rail DC system within city limits, and the AC system on the main line. The plant was built by Westinghouse in 1907 in Mission Style, and was located where the Mianus River empties into the Cos Cob Harbor of Long Island Sound. The plant used coal-fired steam turbines, and the three-phase alternators supplied single-phase power at 11 kV 25 Hz directly to the catenary. They also supplied power to the New York Central's Port Morris generating station to compensate the NYC for power consumed by New Haven trains on the NYC's third-rail supplied line to the Grand Central Terminal within the city limits. The station was designated a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1982 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The power station was decommissioned in 1986-87.The plant was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, but despite the listing and local and national debate, the plant was demolished in 2001. Part of the site is now a public park, and a plaque commemorating the plant is located at the nearby Cos Cob Railroad Station.

The Mianus River Bridge is a span that carries Interstate 95 (Connecticut Turnpike) over the Mianus River, between Cos Cob and Riverside, Connecticut. It is the second bridge on the site. The original bridge collapsed in 1983, killing three motorists. The replacement span is officially named the Michael L. Morano Bridge, after a state senator Michael L. Morano who represented Greenwich.

The Mianus River is a 20.3-mile-long (32.7 km) river in Westchester County, New York, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, in the United States. It begins in the town of North Castle, New York (east of Armonk) in a series of ponds at about 600 feet (180 m) altitude. Flowing northeast into the town of Bedford, it abruptly turns south and passes through the Mianus River Gorge, a nature preserve, before entering Stamford, Connecticut, where it is dammed into the Mianus Reservoir, officially known as the Samuel J. Bargh Reservoir (256-foot (78 m) altitude) of the Greenwich Water Company. From there, it flows south through Stamford and Greenwich into Long Island Sound, at sea level. The river flows under the Mianus River Bridge, which is part of Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, and the Mianus River Railroad Bridge which carries the New Haven Line of Metro-North Railroad. The Mianus flows through parks including the Mianus River State Park (straddling the Stamford/Greenwich border) and Mianus Glen, just to the north in Stamford, as well as Newman Mills Park in North Stamford. The Mianus Fault runs near the river, pushing rock on the east side down, relative to the west side.Mianus is a corruption of Mayanno, an Indian chieftain. Mianus has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.

The Riverside Avenue Bridge is the only cast-iron bridge in Connecticut and one of a small number still in use in the United States. It carries Riverside Avenue over the New Haven Line railroad tracks in the Riverside section of Greenwich, Connecticut. The bridge was part of an earlier span built in 1871 over the Housatonic River by the New York and New Haven Railroad, and when that bridge was replaced, part of it was erected in Riverside in 1895. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.Called "an important engineering landmark" by Cultural Resource Management, a periodical published by the National Park Service, the bridge carries one of the primary streets in this section of town, and is owned by the Connecticut state government.

The Samuel Ferris House is a historic house at 1 Cary Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. Built around 1760 and enlarged around 1800, it is a well-preserved example of a Colonial period Cape, a rare survivor of the form to still stand facing the Boston Post Road in the town. It is also locally significant for its connections to the Ferris family, early settlers of the area.: 5  The house was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Mianus , formerly Mayamus and Upper Landing, is a neighborhood in the town of Greenwich in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Unlike other Greenwich neighborhoods such as Cos Cob or Old Greenwich, Mianus does not have its own ZIP code or post office. Mianus lies partly in the Cos Cob ZIP code, partly in the Riverside ZIP code area, and partly in the Old Greenwich ZIP code area. It lies at an elevation of 23 feet (7 m) and is home to an elementary school. Mianus was also home to the Mianus Motor Works, a marine-engine manufacturer.The Veterans Administration and the town of Greenwich, CT developed the village of 40 starter houses—approximately 800 square feet (74.3 sq m) each—after World War II as rental units for returning servicemen and their families. In the 1950s, as many as 90 children lived with their parents in these houses. The nearby Mianus River, Cos Cob harbor and an extensive woods provided the children with an opportunity to live, grow and play in natural habitats rarely found in American public housing projects. Jack T. Scully, who spent the first 18 years of his life here, has written a collection of coming-of-age poems, Mianus Village, celebrating its bygone way of life. The toponym Mianus is thought to derive from the name of Mayanno, an Indian chieftain.
