St Michael's Church, Bracewell

Bracewell and Brogden is a civil parish in the West Craven area of the Borough of Pendle in Lancashire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 238, increasing slightly to 244 at the 2011 census. The parish includes Bracewell (at grid reference SD863485) and Brogden (at SD858472); historically, both were in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

The A59 is a major road in England which is around 109 miles (175 km) long and runs from Wallasey, Merseyside to York, North Yorkshire. The alignment formed part of the Trunk Roads Act 1936, being then designated as the A59. It is a key route connecting Merseyside at the M53 motorway to Yorkshire, passing through three counties and connecting to various major motorways. The road is a combination of historical routes combined with contemporary roads and a mixture of dual and single carriageway. Some sections of the A59 in Yorkshire closely follow the routes of Roman roads, some dating back to the Middle Ages as salt roads, whilst much of the A59 in Merseyside follows Victorian routes which are largely unchanged to the present day. Numerous bypasses have been constructed throughout the 20th century, one of the earliest being the Maghull bypass in the early 1930s, particularly where traffic through towns was congested. Portions of the route through Lancashire were proposed to be upgraded to motorway standard during the mid-20th century, latterly being downgraded to significant improvements then ultimately withdrawn from consideration. Sections of the road have previously been noted as being amongst the most dangerous in the country, particularly in Yorkshire, despite continued efforts to improve road safety.

Horton, historically known as Horton-in-Craven, is a village and a civil parish in the Ribble Valley district of the English county of Lancashire (historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire). Population details are now included in the civil parish of Newsholme. It is near the town of Barnoldswick. Horton has a place of worship, anciently called a chapelry or chapel of ease. For transport, there is the A59 nearby. The parish adjoins the Ribble Valley parishes of Gisburn, Paythorne and Newsholme, the Pendle parish of Bracewell and Brogden and the parishes of Hellifield and Martons Both in the Craven district of North Yorkshire. According to the census of 2001, the parish had a population of 76, however the United Kingdom Census 2011 grouped the parish with Newsholme and Paythorne (2001 pop. 50 and 95), giving a total of 253.The name Horton is a common one in England. It derives from Old English horu 'dirt' and tūn 'settlement, farm, estate', presumably meaning 'farm on muddy soil'. This example is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the west of the parish in the Little Painley area, on high ground near the River Ribble, is the site of a Bronze Age Bowl barrow.Horton was once a township in the ancient parish of Gisburn, in the Staincliffe Wapentake of the West Riding of Yorkshire. This became a civil parish in 1866, forming part of the Bowland Rural District from 1894 to 1974. It has since become part of the Lancashire borough of Ribble Valley. Along with Rimington, Gisburn, Middop, Gisburn Forest, Paythorne and Newsholme, the parish forms the Gisburn, Rimington ward of Ribble Valley Borough Council.The Pennine Bridleway National Trail and Ribble Way pass through the parish.

Barnoldswick Town Football Club is a football club based in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, England. They are currently members of the North West Counties League Premier Division and play at Greenberfield Lane. They are affiliated to the West Riding County Football Association.

West Craven is an area in the east of Lancashire, England in the far northern part of the borough of Pendle. Historically the area was within the ancient county boundaries of Yorkshire and was administered as part of the Skipton Rural District of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. After 1974 and becoming part of the Pendle borough of Lancashire, the area that was formerly in the larger Craven area of the West Riding of Yorkshire has been known as West Craven owing to its cultural links with Yorkshire. Towns and villages in West Craven are: Barnoldswick, Earby, Sough, Kelbrook, Salterforth and Bracewell and Brogden. There is a West Craven Area Committee for Parish Councils in the area.West Craven is also the name of a ward of Craven district in North Yorkshire, adjoining the West Craven area in Lancashire. The ward includes the parishes of Broughton, Carleton, Elslack, Martons Both and Thornton in Craven.

Barnoldswick (pronounced ) is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Pendle, in the administrative county of Lancashire, England. It is within the boundaries of the historic West Riding of Yorkshire. Barnoldswick and the surrounding areas of West Craven have been administered since 1974 as part of the modern administrative county of Lancashire. This was when West Riding County Council and Barnoldswick Urban District Council were abolished and the town was transferred to the Borough of Pendle. Situated 30 miles (48 km) from Leeds, Manchester and Preston, nearby towns include Skipton to the east, Clitheroe to the west, Burnley to the south, and Keighley to the east southeast. The civil parish has a population of 10,752.

Bancroft Shed was a weaving shed in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, England, situated on the road to Skipton. Construction was started in 1914 and the shed was commissioned in 1920 for James Nutter & Sons Limited. The mill closed on 22 December 1978 and was demolished. The engine house, chimneys and boilers have been preserved and maintained as a working steam museum. The mill was the last steam-driven weaving shed to be constructed and the last to close. The engine house is open to visitors and the William Roberts cross compound 600hp engine regularly runs from steam generated from donated wood.

Barnoldswick railway station was the only railway station on the Midland Railway's 1-mile-64-chain (2.9 km) long Barnoldswick Branch in the West Riding of Yorkshire in England. It served the market town of Barnoldswick, which was in West Riding of Yorkshire at the time. The line left the Leeds and Bradford Extension Railway at Barnoldswick Junction 55 chains (3,600 ft; 1,100 m) from Earby railway station. The line through the junction was on a 20-chain (1,300 ft; 400 m) radius after which it converged to a single track and ran in a straight but undulating line to Barnoldswick. The passenger train that ran back and forth between Barnoldswick and Earby was known locally as the 'Barlick Spud' or 'Spudroaster'. The real reason for the name is lost in time, but the two versions that were commonly recited are that the original branch locomotive was so small it looked like a portable potato roaster used by a local vendor or that the journey time was the same as that taken to roast a potato in the locomotive's firebox. Barnoldswick has been in the Pendle District of Lancashire since 1974.

Weets Hill is a hill in the West Craven area of Pendle, Lancashire, England. It is 2+1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) south-west of the town of Barnoldswick and is 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of Pendle Hill. The hill is in the traditional county of Yorkshire, but following local government reorganisation in 1974 it falls within Lancashire for administrative purposes. The summit has a Triangulation Pillar and commands views over much of east Lancashire, the north Ribble Valley, north Aire Valley and the Yorkshire Dales. The summit is approximately 250 metres (820 ft) above the towns of Barnoldswick, Salterforth, Earby, Kelbrook and Gisburn. Stock Beck originates from the north face of the summit. To the west of the summit lies Gisburn Old Road which is surfaced until it reaches Weets House, from there onwards it is a track over the shoulder of Weets. This road originally ran from Colne to Gisburn but was replaced by the road from Blacko to Gisburn (turnpike) in the 19th century. Weets House was called “Stoops House” on maps until the later part of the 20th century (Stoops were guide posts at junctions on roads crossing open moorland).

The Little Cut, also known as the Rain Hall Rock Branch or the Rain Hall Rock Canal, was a short canal connecting the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Barnoldswick to the nearby Rain Hall Rock limestone quarry. The canal ran north-east for 950 yards (870 m) through farmland and a deep cutting—including two tunnels—before terminating in a small basin.

Middop is a rural hamlet and civil parish in Lancashire, England. It is in Ribble Valley district. Middop is near the villages of Rimington and Gisburn and approximately 8 miles (13 km) north-east of its post town, Clitheroe. In the 2001 United Kingdom census, Middop had a population of 43. Owing to the limited population from the 2011 Census details are included in the parish of Rimington. The parish adjoins the Ribble Valley parish of Rimington the Pendle parishes of Blacko and Bracewell and Brogden. Middop has four Grade II listed buildings and structures, Middop Hall, Newfield Edge Hall, a boundary stone and a milestone.Middop was once a township in the ancient parish of Gisburn, in the Staincliffe Wapentake of the West Riding of Yorkshire. This became a civil parish in 1866, forming part of the Bowland Rural District from 1894 to 1974. It has since become part of the Lancashire borough of Ribble Valley. It shares its parish council with Rimington. Along with Rimington, Gisburn, Gisburn Forest, Paythorne, Newsholme and Horton, the parish forms the Gisburn, Rimington ward of Ribble Valley Borough Council.
