West Ginge

The Ridgeway is a ridgeway or ancient trackway described as Britain's oldest road. The section clearly identified as an ancient trackway extends from Wiltshire along the chalk ridge of the Berkshire Downs to the River Thames at the Goring Gap, part of the Icknield Way which ran, not always on the ridge, from Salisbury Plain to East Anglia. The route was adapted and extended as a National Trail, created in 1972. The Ridgeway National Trail follows the ancient Ridgeway from Overton Hill, near Avebury, to Streatley, then follows footpaths and parts of the ancient Icknield Way through the Chiltern Hills to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. The National Trail is 87 miles (140 km) long.

Scutchamer Knob, also known as Cuckhamsley Hill and occasionally as Scotsman's Knob or Beacon Hill, is an early Iron Age round barrow on the Ridgeway National Trail at East Hendred Down in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire). Originally called Cwichelmeshlaew or Cwichelm's Barrow, it is recorded as having been the place where King Edwin of Northumbria killed Cwichelm of Wessex in AD 636 and, in the Middle Ages, became the meeting point of the shire moot (or market) which was abolished in 1620. It was long thought to be the actual burial place of Cwichelm but the mound has been excavated several times without serious finds. In 1006, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that the Danes marched to Cuckhamsley Hill as they believed that if they reached the Hill, they would never return to the sea. The knob appears to have once been a round barrow, but now is a semi-circular bank with a round front. Its appearance may have changed in part due to vandalism based on the belief it was used to hoard treasure. The name "Scutchamer" may have derived from "Cwichelmeshlaew". An alternate explanation is that the name is based on the word "scutcher", someone who "scutched" or beat out flax to loosen its fibres, and the knob was a location of local fairs trading in local products deriving from this practice.

Holy Trinity Monastery, East Hendred was briefly a convent of contemplative Benedictine nuns situated in the Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire, from 2004 to 2012, forming part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth. In late May 2012 the community of two relocated to Howton Grove, Wormbridge, Herefordshire, where it became part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff. The community retained its dedication to the Most Holy Trinity but, following Benedictine custom, it also became known by the name of the locality to which it had moved, and therefore called Howton Grove Priory.

East Hendred is a village and civil parish about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Wantage in the Vale of White Horse and a similar distance west of Didcot. The village is on East Hendred Brook, which flows from the Berkshire Downs to join the River Thames at Sutton Courtenay. Historically in Berkshire, it has been administered as part of Oxfordshire, England, since the 1974 boundary changes. The westernmost parts of the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus are in the parish. The Ridgeway and Icknield Way pass through the parish. It was called "the most well connected village in Britain" because of its connections with the railway station in Didcot and the M4 motorway. Champs Chapel Museum of East Hendred is a small museum in a former 15th-century wayside chapel.

Ardington and Lockinge are two civil parishes in the Vale of White Horse district, centred about 2 miles (3 km) east of Wantage, Oxfordshire, that share a single parish council. The two parishes were part of Berkshire until 1974 when they were transferred to Oxfordshire.

The Lockinge Estate is a 3,035-hectare (7,500-acre) agricultural and housing estate near Wantage that today includes most of the land and property encompassing the villages of West Lockinge, East Lockinge and Ardington. The current manager of the Lockinge Estate is Thomas Loyd. Almost the entire estate is included within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The ancient Icknield Way passed through the estate, as does the modern-day National Cycle Route 544.

PLUTO was a materials testing nuclear reactor housed at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, a former Royal Air Force airfield at Harwell, Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom.

The Champs Chapel Museum of East Hendred is a local village museum housed in the former Chapel of Jesus of Bethlehem, built in 1453 by Carthusian monks and now commonly called Champs Chapel, at East Hendred in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire). Exhibits in the museum trace more than a thousand years of the history of East Hendred, a history which is closely interwoven with that of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and England. The museum is open on Sunday afternoons (April to October) and upon request at other times. Admission is free, although voluntary donations are welcomed. The museum is operated entirely by volunteers from local East Hendred Heritage Trust. Some of the Museum collection has been digitised and accessible via eHive website.

Ardington is a village and civil parish about 2 miles (3 km) east of Wantage in the Vale of White Horse. It was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. Since 2012 responsibility for Ardington and the neighbouring parish of Lockinge has been combined in a joint single parish council for Ardington and Lockinge.

DIDO was a materials testing nuclear reactor at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom. It used enriched uranium metal fuel, and heavy water as both neutron moderator and primary coolant. There was also a graphite neutron reflector surrounding the core. In the design phase, DIDO was known as AE334 after its engineering design number. DIDO was designed to have a high neutron flux, largely to reduce the time required for testing of materials intended for use in nuclear power reactors. This also allowed for the production of intense beams of neutrons for use in neutron diffraction. DIDO was shut down in 1990 and is under planning for decommissioning. In all, six DIDO class reactors were constructed based on this design: DIDO, first criticality 1956. PLUTO, also at Harwell, first criticality 1957. HIFAR (Australia), first criticality January 1958. Dounreay Materials Testing Reactor (DMTR) at Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment in Scotland, first criticality May 1958. DR-3 at Risø National Laboratory (Denmark), first criticality January 1960. FRJ-II at Jülich Research Centre (Germany), first criticality 1962.HIFAR was the last to shut down, in 2007.

East Lockinge is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Lockinge, in the Vale of White Horse district, in the county of Oxfordshire, England. It was part of Berkshire until the 1974 local authority boundary changes transferred the Vale of White Horse to Oxfordshire. It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Wantage, the village is included within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). In 1931 the parish had a population of 227. On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished to form "Lockinge".
